Apply cold compresses regularly. Gently massage your breast as you breastfeed your baby. Be sure to completely empty your breast by pumping after feeds, either manually or using a pump.
Keep reapplying cold compresses to help reduce swelling and pain. Avoid applying anything warm to the area since there is already inflammation present. Don't reintroduce heat as it could worsen the infection.
If possible, try using chilled cabbage leaves on your breasts. Rinse the leaves, place them in a plastic bag in the fridge until firm, then apply directly to the painful area. This can help draw out infection.
See a doctor right away if symptoms don't improve within 24 hours or worsen at all. Be sure to fully finish any antibiotics prescribed to clear the infection.
