I've made a Yamaha MT-10 Tourer! - have I ruined it?

Since buying my 2022/3 Yamaha MT-10 SP back in September I've been dreaming of touring on it. The weather might not be up to the task right now, but I've been busy fitting a host of official Yamaha accessories to the silly supernaked to try and turn it into a bike that I'll want to take to Europe next year for some pleasurable sports touring. This is just a quick rundown of the accessories - let us know what you think of them in the comments! #topboxlife

I love touring on my MT10. Like the integrated heated grips. Top box is brilliant for storing the stuff you don't want nicked while you park up for a brew on tour. Best thing that helps touring on an MT10 is knowing where the next petrol station is 😂😂 BTW. SW Motech blaze soft panniers work well on the bike

I'm in the process of building an identical bike. I've used a VFR, GS and a KTM 1290 SAR for touring in the past, but an MT10 for fast mountain roads tops my lists of must-have motorcycle related things. Cheers.
@Banditmanuk

@thepassionofthegoose5472 Done lots of Alpine roads and many in northern Spanish. Lots of rubbish is talked about not being able to tour on an MT10. It's a brilliant fast bike that will handle touring just fine.
@thepassionofthegoose5472
@thepassionofthegoose5472 10 месяцев назад
Absolutely. My 1998 VFR had about the same tank range and I rode it across North America multiple times. Only in a few places, Yukon to Alaska, was the range an issue. Gave me an excuse to get a Rotopax which gave me two additional gallons and all the range one could want. Can't wait to get some miles under my MT. Cheers.@@Banditmanuk

Certainly hasn't ruined it Tim. I did similar with my S1000R but went a bit further and added panniers, a tank bag and a comfier seat as well. Toured all over the place with it and had a great time. The bonus is when you get where you're going you can remove most of the touring stuff and you have a super naked to play on. 😃

I like it, but then I really liked the original MT10 touring edition. I held off buying a top-box for my Tiger1200 for similar aesthetic reasons, but relented a few months ago and fitted one... they're incredibly practical

I really like that the MT10 has practical 'sidegrades' available that make it such a multi-purpose bike. I love the screen shape and look but I hate you can see all the mountings behind. If it had a graduated tint that finished around the clock I'd be tempted to get one.

I looked at an MT-10 as a possible 'do it all' bike to include trips to the French Alps, and Pyrenees etc. Even went as far as looking to fit pannier frames for the trip north and south. One showstopper changed my mind: The real-world tank range is shockingly bad (even when compared to a BMW S1000R, which is pretty much a similar bike). Sure, might be a load of fun down there, but not if the transits are purgatory. Best of both worlds - an S1000XR.
@timrodierides
@timrodierides 2 месяца назад
I've toured on mine - you're looking at 120 miles to the fuel light, about 145 miles tank range. I stop every 100 miles regardless of bike most of the time!

Don't worry Tim - i did the same to my mt07 before i did the nc500. Bigger mra screen, kobra handguards, Yamaha heated grips, sw motech mirror extenders, Yamaha tank bag, venturi tail bag, Yamaha side panniers, Yamaha top box. Most of it came off when i got back, but i can use the bags and top box whenever i want, as all the frame mounts are still on the bike.

Oh and one other thing, which was a big improvement for an old bike (2015) - a usb socket up front on the handlebar, plugged into the aux plug on the bike...

Nothing wrong with luggage. And when you get to your destination, off it comes and you can have a play! Mind you, riding up Send Road is an adventure in itself - mainly due to the p*ss poor road surface. Safe riding.

Absolutely no reason not to do this. I kitted out my 2020 model with Hepco & Becker C-bow panniers and rear case, with Yamaha touring screen, and did a 5 day trip around the far north of Scotland ( from Cornwall) with no problems. I've now transfered the kit to my MT09SP, with equally good results. You don't have to be on a 250kg tank to enjoy touring.😮

Tim must be living my dream. I wonder if I should've done this instead of getting a v4 pikes pig (wife won't get onto the back anyway, top box is my love, radar cruise and blind spot are nice, so are the heated seat and grips, but I could deal with a normal cruise), missing the tuono engine, maybe this would be closer (as long as it's more like aprilia v4 and less like bmw i4 because s1000xr was a snooze), adventure ergos don't help the front end feel (can try dropping the front a bit I guess). Ended up with a giant screen on the multi because the oem ones were terribly loud.

Needs must mate. I bought the Yamaha mt-10 touring kit for mine and used sw motech blaze panniers, great bike in most situation but the kit didn't make it a good tourer. Have an s1000xr for touring with the option for abit of lunacy now. Slightly more power, doesn't sound as good but has nearly double the range.

They're a massive improvement! Honestly they should be standard. No more ducking down to look under my elbows. Genuinely one of the best bang-for-buck improvements. @timrodierides I just don't like stopping for fuel. Especially if it were only 00-120 miles. I get around 180 from my K1300S. Hence, the comment. Given you had a 1290SAS which is equally as quick and has double the range.

@@inked-96 yeah that’s fair enough! I don’t mind stopping because I’m usually quite good at doing it quickly (unless the French decline my card repeatedly). I liked my SAS but I’d never ever pick a bike based on tank range, it’s the opposite of what bikes are about for me
