Yamaha MT10 How Many Miles before I run out of Petrol / Gas on my Yamaha MT10

With all the hype about the Yamaha MT10 being bad on fuel and reports of some getting only 80 miles I decided to try and see normal riding what I can get to a tank of fuel and also what can you get on reserve to empty run out of fuel.

I got just under 300km before I filled up on a highway ride but that was with the tank filled as full as I could get it. My average was 5.1l/100km (my dash is metric). This video is quite useful as to what I can expect in normal use. I don’t think this bike is as bad as some say. Lots of videos I see people are riding it in 3rd gear on the highway and second around town. I get into top gear as soon as I can and I’m usually in 4th or 5th around the city.

I own an MT-10 and ride it as the toy that it is not for touring or commuting ...riding in the twisties actually USING some of that gloriously masterful torque it really truly DOES suck for range there is no sugar coating it with nonsense about what gear your in because it is rowing through the gears continuously on and off the brakes shooting from one corner to the next...the bike gets AWFUL gas milage ridden like that ....PERIOD I now have about 910 miles on the bike and for instance the S22 rear it came with is totally BALD....it was nearly to the wear bars in the mid section by the 600mile oil change and then I reall started giving her the beans and the tread simply disappeared....no silly burn outs I promise This bike is just SO SO SO much fun! Fair play to you i can't get that sort of mileage mines around the low 30s.. 90/100 goes on to reserve by around 120 start to get a worried. Also don't like the fuel gauge goes from full to half a tank with nothing inbetween, however mine isn't an sp.

@@MOTOUK1 I am considering taking the cat out not to bothered about exhaust itself and get ecu flashed, I have herd it makes the bike a lot louder with more power and makes it smoother. I am interested in bottom power more than top end as I think MT10 is a bit flat until 5000/6000 when it really starts to go. Have you got many miles on your bike?
@MOTOUK1
@MOTOUK1 4 года назад
Yes it does make them louder, not for everyone in fact when I decat mine first I lasted 1 day then put the cat back on. I then researched using a Leovince decat as has a resonator box on it and the akra end can I finally put a baffle in. Now for me it’s perfect sound. By decat ting the bike and ecu flash you won’t see more power but will be so much smoother due to getting the air/fuel ratio correct as these bikes run very lean from stock.

@dallasfoster9016
@dallasfoster9016 4 года назад
Peter It tells the bike that it is colder outside than it really is so it puts more fuel into the bike and runs richer. Highly recommended if you have aftermarket exhaust. It protects the bike from running hot and helps remove the low end dip in power. Google “booster plug” and put in your make/model of bike
@dallasfoster9016
@dallasfoster9016 4 года назад
Peter Actually it is not pointless. I got the best mpg when I had no mods and the booster plug on. When I increased intake and outtake air flow it lowered mpg. But on top of that the bike has less snag on accel and decel

I filled up the other day at over 1.50 per l on super unleaded, I managed about 120 mile before the reserve , was wondering if normal unleaded would yield any more or less also if it runs any different? 2nd tank recently filled with normal unleaded, not noticed and difference so far with it as in how the bike runs it's early days on the tank so the jury is still out ,once again, thanks for the vids

Ok 👍 I know it sounds mad but when Andy at Junction33 explained it made sense! So the bike runs lean from new, when you have ecu flashed it sorts the fueling so more fuel, but by adding more torque on the flash more fuel or correct fuel means more forward movement at less throttle input so uses less fuel. I would say I have seen 15-20 more miles per tank after flash

Thirsty brute. I guess that's the price you pay for running this stunning mustle bike. In comparism 550's and latterly 600's have always provided a compromise between cost and performance. I ride yamaha's FZ6 gen/1. The retuned R6 motor gives racy acceleration in lower gears upto the dizzy 14k redline. Normal riding gives 55mpg, gentle cruising 58mpg, ridden hard wherever possible gives 45mpg. The 600 also gets a bigger tank 19/l, so 200 plus miles to the tank in normal use. I'm considering the MT10 with a pipe and a reflash, more for that amazing exhaust note than anything else, i just wish yamaha had gone 21/22 litres to compensate for the gas guzzle. As for suzuki, 12 litre capacity in their modern retro mustle bike is laughable

Thanks for tuning in 🙏 and the sub 👍, so i agree there are days when i wish 21lt tank on the 10 especially when touring although when touting i take it easy and normally I’m getting in that mode 150 - 160 miles per tank! It’s the same on most super naked bike atm as I’m currently testing the Speed Triple RS from Triumph and that has a 15.5lt tank approx 140miles so they are all similar. I also know that 600cc or 660cc ish is coming back into fashion with the newly to be launched Kawasaki Z650RS and with the Triumph Trident 660, more also coming in the adventure class next week at 660cc adventure bikes, very popular. TBH i think 600cc to 900cc is more than enough for the open roads. Again thanks, 🙏

That’s too bad! You need a Honda Africa Twin then or touring bike.

carl hownso u figure? It has 160hp , more hp than the 200hp R1 brother and torque down low, lower gearing, heavier, no aero. Spend your time at higher revs because of gearing. The Tuono 1100 gets 32-33 , it's about right on par. You can't get 50mpg out of ANY Supernaked. Maybe a mt07 .

do you have to inform your insurance company after having the work done by Junction 33, is it classed as a performance enhancing procedure ?

Got my SP Monday. Im gonna have the Woolwich pack put on. Did you have the down shift blipper as well? I had my old mt10 flashed by junction 33 and was very happy with it but may get a proper dyno on the SP

MOTOUK All that money spent on an MT-10 (SP at that) and the race kit and dyno to ride it like an old, worn out Goldwing. I don’t get it. Why an MT-10 and not an 07? Or an SV650?
