Nailed it man! As a heavier rider I did have to swap out the 160mm rear to a 180mm. Also spot on with the 175mm cranks. Putting some 170mm on this weekend. The suspension even on a 240ish lb guy is amazing. The initial plush and small bump is just what I needed. I can feel the flex but with the traction and compliance it’s welcomed for what I want this bike for. Anything bigger I’ll reach for the Sentinel. Again, super rad video and spot on review! Can’t wait for more! Party on! 🤘👊😉

I am glad to see manufacturers going back to simpler, shorter travel bikes. Not everyone is a bike park rider, looking for every black diamond trail. If I ever get to purchase another Mtn bike, it'll definitely be a short (120-130mm) travel rig. For now I am enjoying my 27+ Hardtail after a 2 yr hiatus from Mtn biking.

I would say the most interesting part of their latest releases are, what to do with the smuggler? The spur and sentinel combo seems to cover most bases, but if the smuggler comes back at 130/150 could it be the one bike quiver? Great review as always!
@mtbsavant5414
@mtbsavant5414 3 года назад
Good question! There's a sticker on the back of the Sentinel saying you can run it 140mm with a shorter stroke shock. A lighter build and an angle set to make the HTA steeper (gasp) to 64.6 and a fork spring might fit this slot ;)

Love your reviews. They’re very clear, informative, and are presented so genuinely that I feel I could trust everything you say. I have the Spur on the top of my list next to the Trail 429. I’m 230lbs so I’m debating the stiffness argument you raised with relation to rider weight, though another Clydesdale seems to be satisfied. My question is, when you reviewed the Sentinel, there were some paint chipping issues. Are you concerned about that with the Spur?

Ideal person is 180lbs and under for the spur. Got the 2021 sentinel XO near same price range with fox factory kashima 36 and X2 30lbs. Wish I was light enough to enjoy something like the spur but 120mm for NW mountain terrain would be overwhelming.

My Spur has been leaking oil out of the rear as well. Disappointing but I haven’t lost damper performance. I’ve done a few 10k’ descents and a bunch of long rides up to 65 miles. Going to wear out the recon soon and switch to a Aggressor rear...

Thank you for the video. While the Spur is quite attractive, in contrast to other short-travel trail bikes, the frame cannot handle a 130 fork (120 is their maximum), nor wider 2.6 tires (important for us riding with gravel, sand, rocks), nor a rear shock with a piggyback. If these aren't important, the Spur looks really good.
@Jacob99174
@Jacob99174 3 года назад
You got it, Johnny. If you’re into tuner cars, this is similar to the Ford Focus RS. Not much you can do after market, since OEM already took it to its max capabilities..... at least thats what the Spur seems like without having purchased one and owned it for months.

This is on my “eventual bike fleet” list. Right now priority #1 is getting a bike that I can ride on my local trails and take to bike parks without an issue, probably something along the lines of a 140/140, 140/150, 150/150, or 150/160 29er. So effectively a Canyon Strive or YT Jeffsy at my current budget while sales are in effect.

Do you think there's enough separation between the two to justify the Spur as a second bike for flowy/longer days or just save the $ and buy a lighter wheel/tire combo for those days? I live in Bay Area so ride more or less same trails as you - though not as effortlessly!

Looking at the spur or either the pivot switchblade or 429 enduro. How would you compare the switchblade to the spur. What I gain on climbing vs descending. Our trails in Fernie are typically 40 minute climb to descend 10 minutes.
@thenestpodcast
@thenestpodcast 2 года назад
I have a Switchblade (love way more than Stumpy I owned). I'm looking for a shorter travel bike and am leaning towards the Specialized Epic Evo because I want something in this "down country" category, but with a heaver XC focus than trail. Why? I want a bigger gap in the way the bikes feel (keeping Switchblade) so that I don't feel like I, almost, have two of the same thing.

How would you compare the Spur to the Santa Cruz Blur TR? I don't see anybody talking about differences between the two, and without demos available, it's hard to get answers for myself. This will largely depend on many factors including how steep your climbs are, fitness and your preference. I generally run the largest chain ring I can get away with because I'm more of a slower cadence kind of climber. The 52t and the light weight of the bike allows me to run a 34 but everyone's different.

I'll go to a large. I am 5'11 and a quarter with fairly long arms. I queried a few riders who have the bike and Large seems to be the way to go. If it's a touch long I can dial back the stem. I think if I size down the bike might feel to small. The reach number looks long but the seat tube angle is quite steep. Some should keep that in mind. It makes a difference. Thanks for your reply, and I hope to post a video for all to see and review the bike when and if I get it. Love this colour, it's my first choice

Around 5:30 you mention my exact question about these kinds of bikes. What weight do you have in mind when you say heavier riders might have a different experience. I’m about 205lbs on my lighter days. I don’t ride jump lines but I’d call myself an aggressive rider. Am I near that “weight limit” for the experience you somewhat mention?
@mtbsavant5414
@mtbsavant5414 3 года назад
I had someone 230+ in mind when I said that. I have no bases for that comment other than speculation considering the 5.4lbs frame, 160mm rear brake rotor, and slimmed down dampers (and oil volume) on the SID. However at least 1 person around this weight is having fun on his Spur so what do I know! The progressive suspension and lifetime warranty is there when you need it. My recommendation is to demo the bike if you can.

MTB Savant thanks. That’s what I thought you where getting at. I’m used to bigger bikes and am currently on a stumpjumper. But I’m interested to try something like this when I’m due for a new bike.

have a frame ready to build up , not sure on the stock tyre choice for wet uk trails , what do you think would be a good all conditions maxis tyre combo for this bike , whilst still keeping it light
@rantingwrench

I'd try to strike a middle ground. Something like a Maxxis Dissector up front and Ardent or Forekaster out back. The new Schwalbe Hans Dampf might be worth a look too. I'm currently running the Michelin Wild Enduro F/R combo on my Offering as a year-round setup (fed up with switching tyres for summer/winter) and they're great, but I'd say much too slow-rolling for the Spur.
@mtbsavant5414
@mtbsavant5414 3 года назад
I was going to suggest the forekaster out back as well. It's slightly narrower but should shed mud much better than the rekon

Same thought Izzo has more travel, and doesn’t have flex stay in rear. Slightly heavier, but I’d think more capable (both have great geo).

At 5’ 10” did you find the large to be too long? Curious because I am very similar in size and was thinking the large would fit well.

I haven't ridden a L. After seeing the numbers I decided M was right for me, but I usually downsize anyway. If this were my only do-it-all bike I'd be tempted to go with L with a shorter 40mm stem and higher rise bar.

At 5' 9.5", I went with a size medium Spur, as well. No complaints or regrets so far. It climbs like a billy goat, hops around like a rabbit, and easily eats more high speed hits than you'd ever expect when you point it downhill. This bike is a keeper!

Hey Mike! I’m 5’10 also and I felt the medium was a bit small. I had a blast on it, but hit me butt on the rear tire a few times. I’ll have a Large here soon and I’ll do another video.
