No, Alejandro was not from the Colombian Cartel. He was a lawyer whose family was murdered because he was legally fighting the Cartels. After his family was murdered, he became a hit man, a Sicario.

yep, so he was working some for the Colombian Cartel so he could find and take out the leader of the other Cartel, who was his personal target. As a Sicario he worked for anyone as a gun for hire, but he did it to further his own personal goals. So while he wasn't a member of the Columbian Cartel, he was working for them because he was going to take out the leader of their rival Cartel.

I love the idea that Alejandro is actually the main character, but with Kate serving as the audience proxy. It's kinda his story, and he accomplishes his goal by the end, while shattering Kate's understanding of morality and its place in a land of shadows(or lack of). Legendary pic for a 1st time watch. It’s really a unique story structure. But what of Silvio, the Sonora State Police officer? Why is he in the movie? For whom is he a proxy? The fact that he has a name, a wife, and a son, transform this movie. His role could simply have been as a minion-he would have been in 1000 other movies, but Villeneuve made him a human being with just a few scenes.

I live in Brazil, where two violent drug cartels take over, they own politicians, police officers, judges, who are subsequently linked to the FARC, which is linked to those in Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico! When I watch this film, it is what I see in the news almost daily.

What I liked most about this movie was how realistic many aspects of it were compared to other movies, I live in south/central Texas and grew up in a family business related to construction so my white boy self grew up around more mexicans and illegals than most and the overwhelming majority worked harder for themselves and their families than most legal citizens but that doesn't mean there wasn't a small minority doing stuff you wouldn't believe (same with any race, country etc) so its good to see both sides in this movie. I'm also 'into' guns and police/military stuff so most movies that touch on any of those subjects drive me insane because its almost always so incredibly unrealistic its almost unwatchable but this movie is like my top 3 of all time because even though there were a few mistakes on the guns and gun play (the border scene when the guy exits his car - his was BCG locked to the rear and he used the wrong hand to open the door) and some other random stuff it was still more realistic than 95% of movies out there

I’ve driven my truck and ridden my motorcycle through West Texas and on the other side of the line on my travels into Mexico. I’ve never seen any bad shit, but the Frontera is spooky, especially between towns. I rode from Balmorhea down to Langtry and on to Del Rio and Piedras Negras, crossed, and headed down to Saltillo and Monterrey through Monclova. In Monclova I was stopped by some friendly agriculture cops that wanted a bribe but were satisfied with some cheap cigars. It was actually a relief to interact with them. Do you know what I’m talking about? The vibe on both sides of the border on that stretch of the Frontera? I’m not superstitious or religious. I studied science and I’m an avid science fan. But I believe that whole country down there is haunted, whether by ghosts or an evil spirit, I don’t know. Silence. You don’t see nobody for miles. Beautiful and bleak terrain, canyons with little streams and stands of trees on the canyon bottoms. You come out of the canyons, flat terrain, nothing but Joshua trees and cholla for miles, mountains just a smudge on the horizon. And unprompted, I’m thinking to myself, a lot of blood was spilled here. A long time ago, before Columbus even, there were wars and murders in this place. People hunted people. And I shiver and I keep riding and the feeling passes. And after some hours, the smudge of mountains grow taller, become clearer, and I know I’m a couple of hours from Monterrey and humanity. I won’t completely relax until I reach San Luis Potosí, but at least I’m close to humanity. I’m seeing more cars. I stop in Monterrey for the night because the highways aren’t safe after dark. If the bandits don’t get you, you could hit a cow.

I agree with the 95% and most of what you said, I had some gripes with the tactics used ( especially the first scene and the tunnel ) but I loved the way they handled the border shootout. L shaped beside and in front of the car, everyone with a clear line of fire, really solid stuff.

Google Mike Vining and Norman Schwarzkopf picture, it's not Mike Vining in the picture but lots of people think it is. Jeffry Donovan's character in Sicario is based on him and on that picture, total badass.

The scene with Alejandro and the imprisoned cartel leader tied to the chair: no the implication wasn’t he sexually assaulted him. It was that they were going to waterboard him - notorious American torture idea, stimulated drowning . And the imposed physical dominance was just a scare tactic before starting. Which is why Josh brolin’s character said to the other white guy, “oh you have him a belly full of water? You devil.”. - something that would make a water boarding experience much much worse. - and why Alejandro walked in with the water jug and said you’ll learn about hell in Yankee land. And they finished on the drain.

I grew up on the border between el paso and juarez, so alot of these things were very normal for awhile. It was even worse in small towns where i have family. Lost alot of family, an uncle whose body was never found and others who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you notice in the movie most cars are older. We would never drive our newer cars across or you risked getting robbed, most times by the state police like he said. Theyre not always your friends.

I think it's very easy for people to think how bad it is for police, judges, and officials to be corrupted in Mexico, but it's definitely a tough choice. When the threat of not doing what a cartel wants can be that you'll be taken to the middle of nowhere to be beheaded and your son will come with to watch and subsequently be skinned alive, it's easy to see why people give in. Also important to note how the state of things is heavily influenced by the US. There's a huge demand for drugs and a readily available supply of weapons that can find their way south. It's a perfect combination to keep cartels in business and keep them violent.

“Sicario” is stylistically refined, radical - truly captivating! Kate stands for us viewers, who watch the events unfold in bewilderment. This superbly staged thriller shows a terrible reality and asks uncomfortable questions without pretending to know the answers. The incredibly exciting thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve is already legendary. A masterpiece. The actors are all magnificent.

I love this movie, it's so well done for the story it tells, and that's just how Denis Villeneuve does movies. Another one of his that I find similar in terms of cinematography is "Incendies". I totally get that is a hard watch for some people but I also feel like it isn't as far fetched to think that all of these things happen for real without us ever hearing about it. The morality aspect is something that I also really liked in this because to an extent you can understand everyone's side. And when you see the corrupt cop, Silvio, Kate, it reminds me of another piece of dialogue "Because when it's your life and the lives of everyone you love, your moral conviction doesn't mean anything. It leaves you. All you want at that moment is not to be shot.", I feel like it illustrates that side of us that's nearly universal. Few will sacrifice their life for their morals.

He wasn’t sexually forcing the guy to do anything. He was initially just standing super close for intimidation/dominance. What he actually was doing to the guy was waterboarding, which is a torture method that simulates drowning (hence the jug of water).

What's sad is the things in this movie are just the tip of the iceberg. There's some really fucked up things that happen every day in this world. In most cases I'm the type of person to step up/speak up when I see something is wrong...which makes me empathize with Emily's character...but I also understand things are just different in other areas of the world. You step on the wrong person's toes and you're gone. It actually reminds me of a story Jon Bernthal told on a podcast (possibly Joe Rogan?). He saw a woman getting beat up pretty bad by a group of men and tried intervening. One of them pointed a gun at him and told him to get the hell out of there. I imagine that woman was raped/murdered that night and there really wasn't anything he could do about it. Humans are terrifying.

This movie is intense, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a fun early 90s movie with TONS of heart, you might like "Drop Dead Fred"! I used to watch it when was a young kid, and I re-watched it again in my 30s (while high) and cried tears of happiness at the nostalgia and the great message that I missed when I was young

I understand you have trouble getting your thoughts out, but i really appreciate how much it clearly affected you emotionally, esp since you understand that this happens irl and it's actually worse than this depiction. That realization that this stuff really happens hit you like a ton of bricks. Don't worry, it hit me too, just like that, when i first learned what the irl cartel was like. It's crazy and it's so close to us in the US too and people don't even care. IRL nobody is really doing anything to stop it. It's alright btw to not be the best at analysis of things or speaking. I think you clearly conveyed how the movie impacted you even without saying a lot of words.

Alejandro is so bad ass in this movie. I guess it spoils what he is if you look up what "Sicario" means.. But can you blame him? That whole last scene with him as he gets revenge. Arguably he let off the drug lord and his family much easier than they did with Alejandro. Unlike the drug lord, Alejandro made sure to end his family's life fast and relatively painless comparatively. Also Alejandro has to live with his pain and guilt.. Diaz doesn't. In fact I think the only reason Alejandro doesn't kill them all right away is so that Diaz can feel what it's like to lose everything for even 5 seconds.

In the 80s it was all about the Columbian Cartels. But when the Mexican Cartels began to rise even the Columbian's were afraid of the Mexicans. Nothing was sacred to the Mexican Cartels. There were no limits or lines.

One of the larger problems in combating the cartels is that hurting one helps the others because the customer base does not shrink. Medellín is a reference to the first drug cartel formed by Pablo Escobar. During that time the united states could and did on many occasions negotiate and effect the cartel, creating a sort of stability. Unfortunately when that cartel dissolved it was replaced by almost a hydra of others. So the possibility of setting the stage for one large organization to emerge and replacing the multiple would be beneficial for the united states. As immoral as the plan might be it is still the most possible thus reasonable plan anyone has theorized. It would be fantasy to believe that the cartels could ever be eradicated when they bring in multiple to tens of billions in profits yearly.

Really ? Sicario? Whats wrong with you people voting for this movie? You really threw her off the cliff here lol. If you wanted a Villeneuve movie vote for Dune or Arrival. Dont get me wrong I think this movie is just about perfect ( besides some of the tactics used in the shootouts ) but Stef is just way too vulnerable for stuff like this. :) Really great movie though, Villeneuve directing a movie with Sheridan's script...it was destined to be outstanding. The way they built the tension from crossing to border into Mexico, all the way to back is a masterclass in film making. 10/10

Just want to point out that when he said "don't forget about my daughter", the wife knew what would happen next. She knew that it was over for her and her sons which is why she started crying when he said that.

She could have been thinking "my husband killed this man's daughter and now sounds like he going to kill me and my boys just to get revenge on him. How could my husband do this horrible act and didn't expect retribution? How could he not expect that chances are that me and our children would pay for his crimes?".

I keep wondering how much better it might have been if they’d just cuffed and gagged her for the rest of the movie as soon as she started walking into the bank. Just throw her in a trunk and make her sign the paper at the end. The only thing she did right the entire movie was not try to shoot Alejandro.
