I ordered from Suhr. A carve top Modern. It’s amazing. It’s beautiful. Killer top and roasted neck. The problem when ordering a guitar, ya can get in trouble thinking that I’m gonna order this guitar so that it covers ALL my needs. If you play different styles of music that’s tough.

I absolutely LOVE Mayones guitars... the only gripe I have is most of the stock stuff (i.e. GuitarGuitar held stock) doesn't have a 5 position switch, though that is easily changed out. When you consider that you'd pay north of £2500 for an off the shelf Fender Custom Shop what you can get from Mayones for the same price is insane.

Hey mate great vid. At the moment I'm loving my 2 ESP eclipse but if I could I would move the pick up selector next to the knobs. It keeps getting in the way during furious tapping! That's my custom build with a crazy flame vintage honey burst. This could change next month. Greetings from Glasgow.

I've owned about 10 one off custom guitars in the past and every single one was built to a need of something special for a band/project I played with. Right now I'm looking for second Warmoth custom Tele and I'm gonna order it in December. The specs are Alder body in Mary Kay white finish, mint green pickguard, roasted flame maple neck with rosewood fretboard, 22 6100 size stainless frets and 10-16" compound radius, Lollar Vintage T (bridge), Tweed strat (middle) and Royal T (neck) with custom electronics, Hipshot Griplock tuners and Gotoh/Wilkinson tele bridge.

I ordered a kiesel vader multiscale 7 string back in august and got it in november. never felt happier about an instrument. Swamp ash body, maple top, birdseye maple fretboard. i just ordered another kiesel last month, a vanquish 6 string. as much as i love the guitars they make i just feel like they could be much better. Whenever i have the money im going to pick up a 7 string mayo duvell with a black limba body, maple burl top, walnut/purple heart 6 peice neck, birdseye maple freboard, bpk juggs, and an evertune. as for the finish id love a pink center with a blue burst over it. Going to save for one

I like to play around on the Halo Guitars Online Builder Tool (or whatever it's called) but if I had loads of money to spend on custom guitars, I'd pretty much improve on my Ibanez S7420. It's the comfiest and easiest guitar I've played, but it's not aesthetically pleasing. I bought it second hand from a friend for £250 with a hard case and a Di Marzio strap with the straplocks. It has stock pickups and what looks like hardened glue near the jack socket. Anywho, I'd base it off an S7420, but give it a spalted maple top, (I love the look of them) change the fingerboard from rosewood to maple, change the inlays to something cooler than those boring dots, glow in the dark side inlays and stick some Seymour Duncans in for pickups.

Levi, which guitar did you trade for the 8 string? Your custom order sounds crazy! Looking forward to seeing it when realised.
@LeviClay
@LeviClay 6 лет назад
My Vigier 7 string - I'm just not an ERG guy... I know how it seems me trading it for an 8... BUT I think what is is that 7 feels like a 6 string with a couple more notes. An 8 has almost a whole extra octave - so you can play it like a different instrument.

With me, I would order something from PRS. I LOVE the wide fat neck that's on my SE. Never has a neck felt so good to me. I need a thick and wide neck because from the palm of my fretting hand to the tip of my middle finger, it's almost 7.5 inches. I would have a neck thru, 27 fret baritone Explorer body with mahogany wings, 5 piece maple/walnut neck, dark rosewood fretboard or possibly even a Richlite board since rosewood is getting harder to get ahold of and I also like Richlite, all black hardware, 3x3 headstock, Hipshot locking tuners, string thru set, Seymour Duncan Invader for the bridge position, P90 for the middle position and a Synyster Gates sustainer pickup for the neck position. The finish would be transparent medium gloss black on the body and the neck would just have a few coats of ebony stain. The strap buttons would be Jim Dunlop locking ones, it would have a Switchcraft 3 way toggle, one master knob placed further away from the bridge pickup so I wouldn't hit it while I play and it would be strung with Ernie Ball strings that go from 6th to 1st 52, 48, 38, 18, 14, and 11.

I want an 8 string guitar with a little longer scale length than I've got now--maybe 27"--3 pickups with as many switching and tone options as possible, cutaways all the way to the 24th fret, either no radius or a very flat radius, and MIDI on all 8 strings (been thinking about doing that on my current guitar with the Graphtech Ghost stuff, but if I got a new guitar, I'd prefer it on that). I'd go for neckthrough unless someone can convince me they've solved the speed bump problem of other neck styles. I don't care much about looks. That's not what a guitar is for. I also don't care who makes it as long as the price is reasonable and it does everything a good guitar should do. So here's a question for everyone. Beyond Halo and Mayones, what other custom shops are out there, and for anyone with actual experience buying a custom, what shop did you go with and what's your take on their work?

Levi.. from memory... I was very interested in True temperament with Evertune bridge about 18 months ago. I saw one made by VGS [German?] as specified for Tommy Denander, and reviewed by Ola Eklund . It was priced at only £980 i think. I would still be interested , but I don't know if they went into full production!? And life side-tracked me, like it does! The guitars' tuning has always annoyed me, but I have never ever seen True Temperament in a shop. i nearly got one custom made in this country but it became too expensive, in fact it was the Luthier that persuaded me not to go ahead. I play Vigier [plus some second hand basic Ibanez with floating trem, RG types. And classical guitars] Cheers from John in Hampshire

Hi, Levi, nice video here. I very seldom comment on people's videos, but this one is about a topic I hold dear...custom guitars. Your question is, WHAT WOULD YOU GET IF YOU WERE ORDERING A CUSTOM GUITAR? Sadly, I'd get something that many, many "custom" guitar brands refuse to do. And that is DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS. I mean, it is nice that you can get all the timbers you wanna use, all the finish options, colours, fretwire, pickups, blah, blah...but not being able to change, say, the width of the fretboard, or the thickness and back profile of the neck, is just like going to a master tailor to get a special suit made of the finest materials with absolute unique design, but only being able to get a M size...Which makes no sense absolutely. Guitars, to me, are very much like tools and clothing at the same time. They must work the way you need them to work, and they need to fit your physique. There's no way around it. It doesn't make sense for a guy with big, massive hands to play a short scale with a tight string spacing...just to name an example. Almost none of the companies alter the dimensions of their guitars - I have a great friend ordering a guitar from an american brand that boasts to make total custom guitars and he requested to change the width of the neck as he is a classical guitar player and likes a bit wider necks....he got a big NO as a response. So to what extent is custom a usable word in the guitar manufacturing world? I really don't know, it can be tricky to answer. I am a builder myself, and have a very small brand that specializes in headless guitar design, and I will tell you....what the client wants, is what he gets. No one gets a no here in my workshop, and all dimensions can be subject to change at request. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, and thanks for the videos :) David.

Oh, and Bare Knucke pickups, sir....not only they are G R E A T...I use them in my builds as I can tailor EVERYTHING to the look of the instrument that I have in my mind. Truly custom pickups for truly custom guitars.

I'm about to order my Custom Mayones... It's gonna be a Regius Core 7. Basically standard Regius woods, meaning ash body wings, maple/mahogany/amazakoe/wenge 11ply neck, mahogany flamed top, (dirty trans red burst, all satin), ebony board (16'' radius, 25.4 scale length), 3 ply black pearl black binding, Seymour Duncan JB set (wanted to get those matt black covers... But apparently SD only offers those on the nazgul set, which I don't like and it's currently not possible to order JBs with black covers...) and a Hipshot US Contour bridge. (They're finally offering trems for the core carve!) Aaaaand here's the most important thing: The build in piezo system. Standard Regius knob layout, 1x vol, 1x piezo blend. (I had the option of adding a third knob, to keep a tone knob, as I wanted that as well... But it would mess too much with my OCD, so I had to choose between the piezo blend and the tone knob. Didn't want to, but I can live without the tone knob.) So yeah, rly excited! Might swap the SDs out for some Bareknuckles, but for now I'm in love with the JBs. What'ya think fellas? :D

Be confident that you don't get to become a dealer of a brand like Mayones (or any brand for that matter) unless the manufacturer is confident you'll be a good ambassador for the brand. I have a lot of time for both, great stores doing a lot for the community! Let us know how you get on :)

I played a few of these Mayones in a retail situation and the setups were awful. It seems to happen a lot, recently I played a second hand EVH worth nearly £2,000 and it was terrible. Same with Strandberg I tried recently .. horrible....and other big names. Then you pick up a brand new mass produced PRS priced at £600 and it plays great, setup absolutely right. Another example, I was teased into playing a scalloped guitar , basically copying Malmsteens for £1500 New, which I loved. ... ! ... and I don't usually like any Fenders Why don't retailers set up examples of all makes they stock ? Sorry, i don't mean to sound whingey. ;~)
