Save you all some time and give you a quick recap. Put “Mosquito Bits” and neen oils in a watering can. Let it sit for like 5 minutes and use that to water your plants. She does not measure the neem oil, just eyeballs it. Or uses ready made neem oil pray on top of soil or to spray gnats directly. Also puts sticky traps on all plants. Especially the new ones.

This is nice for people who have short attention span and for super long boring but informative videos, but this is not that. we as viewers need to remember, our content creators rely on the views so they can be more present in the algorithm. Less views means less rewards for our creators, means less interest to keep up a channel, were missing out on good ones because we didnt helped the good channels to have more traffic. And I personally think this video is pretty good, cause I did truly used most of these things before I found this, so yea, I have a bunch of insecticides, sand and rocks that will be hanging out in storage. To make it short, please encourage viewers to watch the whole thing, after all as viewers that's all our contribution in the yt plant community.

My advice: ALWAYS quarantine new soil. Open it. Do you see gnats? Return or throw away after tightly sealing up the bag. If upon opening it looks safe, moisten the soil, close the bag and set aside for about 2 weeks. Open the bag. If it’s still clear, you’re good to go. Otherwise return or discard.

Often you don't see anything. The soil I bought had larvae and I didn't know until the plants were potted. So treating the soil you have with mosquito bit water is probably a good idea.
@RavenVargas27

Easier way for me I have a pot I don't use for food put new soil in it heat it on the stove kills everything. Also you can put what you want in a plant pot just pour boiling water over it, another is put it in the freezer for a day or 2
@Rolandooo7
@Rolandooo7 9 месяцев назад
Amen. All soil these days are contaminated that way, unfortunately... :( More expensive potting soils mostly as well, chances are lower and quality is usually slightly higher as they probably treat and heat up the soil longer and better but as with all pests....they are called 'pests' for a reason.... I don't find it worth their money (when you need a lot). I also think less pesticides use and climate warming is speeding up the rate of these kinds of pesky little pests too. I buy Cocopeat more and more and find it a very nice alternative! or mix it 50/50 with potting soil, works really great and cocopeat attracts NO pests at all (in my experience at least) and aerates the soil and keeps moisture under it better too. Great stuff. My WOW is; store the bags of potting soil in your basement or shed etc. CLOSED and tape all the tiny small openings on the sides so no air can get in or out anymore. Then leave them like that for a year (so plan to buy ahead and schedule when you want/need to repot so you always have a bag/bags ready). Preferably bag it in a large carton box too and close that with tape. Gnats will come out of the soil but have nowhere to go and all will die eventually. As with other buggers like strange worms and centipedes or vine weevil larvae (Hell NOOO) which are also a very very annoying pest these days.... check the box regularly, you will find the occasional dead insect(s) in it next to the bag which will tell you how pesky these insects are even that they've made it out somehow... only then after 1 year or so I use that bag of soil. Then still cook and treat it most of the time after inspection (for smaller pots and containers) because I've experienced that one nasty pest can simply destroy all your well cared-for plants or garden, especially if you have some special species (I have bamboos, ornamental grasses and acer palmatums which seem to be susceptant here) and also cost you a ton of time, more money and frustration to get rid of them afterwards! Prevention is key and will save you in the long run :)
@friesfan1

Microwave new soil. Kills eggs and larvae. 2 cups for about 3 minutes. No need to toss that expensive potting soil.

You have saved me from trying the dia-earth… the only thing I haven’t tried except for rocks and sand… it all adds up !! But Neem oil, mosquito bits and sticky tap still didn’t do all of the trick and had to bring out my Ortho Home Defense when I was fluffing the soil to help dry out, which I’m running a dehumidifier in my room now, to dry the soil from treatments!! My experience with my two snake plants: I tried sticky traps, neem oil, mosquito bits, alcohol and soap mix. None of them worked. Here is what worked for me: 1) let the soil dry completely. 2) put 2-3 inches of fine grain sand on top of the soil. 3) bottom water the plant. Don’t pour water on the sand. Good luck out there!

yeah this is what i'm currently doing and the fungus gnats have no way of entering the soil, unlike what this video claimed. I can barely jam my finger in there when it's wet, it becomes like cement. No bug is getting through. They can only dance on top of the sand, and not penetrate it. Horticultural sand.

I am currently top dressing with a mixture of perlite, diametracious earth and cinnamon. My plants are thriving, but after watching your video I may reconsider the diametracious earth. This was a solid video thank you for posting. I'm realizing I may be a fungus gnat expert as I have been in every exact situation you described - I thought I uniquely dealt with diatomaceous earth ruining my potting soil! I have to say, I ended up at the same conclusions as you: I use neem and BTI and yellow traps. I am mainly commenting to suggest for you or anyone still curious what other methods are out there, hands down the best method I have used is nematodes. They are more expensive than any other option due to the fact they do not store well, so I generally use them starting from the day I receive them and attempt to water everything within the few days until I run out. They decimate the numbers. Like a incomprehensible amount compared to the greatest successes of Neem/BT. I don't usually leave comments or endorse products, but I just had to spread the word for anyone else attempting to cull the numbers on these pests. Any reputable brand works, just make sure the species are right. Steinernema feltiae are better for cold climates like indoor pots next to drafty fall/winter windows. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora are better for hotter climates that stay above 75 degrees F regularly (25C) so these are particularly better suited for summer greenhouses and grow tents. Best of luck to anyone reading this!

Excellent video, great bullet points, and comedic thumbnails. The method that seems to be working for me is mosquito bits “tea” for watering, bottom watering plants that I can (some hanging plants I cannot bottom water), and sticky traps just to give the finger to the adults. I use neem oil on my outdoor hibiscus and lillies for aphid and beetle control but I’m not a fan of the smell of it so inside use will not happen at my home. Thank you so much for the cool video.

Hi, I just came across your channel and never thought of doing this. Thanks for the info! 😊I had a really bad gnat infestation last year and didn't really look into until earlier this year. I have been recently just using mosquitoe bits on top of my soil but I have still found new gnats flying around 🤨 will definitely give this a try to help with one's still lingering around. 😊

I have tried everything under the sun with no results, i have heard that the only thing that works is mosquito bits, but apparently you have to soak them in water overn ight then use it as a soil drench

Ugh I'm real glad I've found this video because I've been fighting an infestation for 4 months now and their larvae have damaged the roots of almost all my plants to where the plants have all died lmao. I had the exact same thing happen with peroxide, and I've tried a lot of other things too. All the plants are in my bedroom, so I basically have gnats flying around me all the time. And I own some land snails as pets and somehow a gnat got into the snail tank and the tank got infested with larvae. And like I've had to throw out all of the baby herbs and vegetables I had been growing from seed. Needless to say, I'm extremely tired of the gnats and its nice to see someone try every method of getting rid of them :)

@thresh0014
@thresh0014 3 года назад
The problem all of you are having is using sand and still watering the same way, you HAVE to bottom water and let the surface stay dry. Place them in a tray and fill it with water and let them sit in it for 30-45 mins they'll soak up what they need and the main top layer will stay bone dry making it impossible for the larvae to live in.

This was super helpful. I have been fighting an infestation with my 55 plants. Tried peroxide, captain jacks dead bug, a fungicide spray and they were getting worse. I’ve gone through 2 packs of the yellow sticky traps and they were full. I did just try the mosquito bits. I made the tea and soaked them all about 6 days ago. They are dwindling. I found out the hard way about the mold when I covered the soil with the bits and then saw all the mold a few days later. Wish I would have seen this video first.😁 Then I went through and scraped off all of it from all the plants. I have more sticky traps up. It says on the bottle to use every 7 days for three weeks. Do you use it every time you water?

Thanks for this video! I just got into plants/gardening and i made the mistake of bringing a pothos from a stranger into my house without inspection and BOOM, they're everywhere now. This saved me so much time doing the trial and error of figuring out what works and what doesn't. Neem oil and mosquito bits it is!!

I tried everything for my plants as well. I ended up repotting every single plant and I thought it worked until I literally just saw one flying around my room 😔
@faithparker3085
@faithparker3085 3 года назад
Update: I looked through each plant in my room to see which has the gnat & as I sifted through the top soil I pretty quickly found the one. I ended up just getting rid of it & putting it on my deck outside. It’s been about two weeks and I haven’t seen any. For a LAST RESORT I would suggest repotting each plant. Pros: it gets rid of fungus gnats. Cons: many plants will die from transplant shock.

Agreed, thanks for adding all the methods you tried. I tried a few of those and with little success. The Apple cider vinegar and soap did nothing. I even bought a little apple looking trap that basically had apple cider vinegar in it also and that did nothing.

Thank you so much for this video. Your demeanor really made this easy to watch. I just discovered fungus gnats, and have a BUNCH of new + established plants huddled in my living room. These pests have started to kill my money tree, and I’m catching them via sticky tape in my orchid soil. I’ve just ordered mosquito bits + neem + hydrogen peroxide (just in case it does something), and cannot wait for them to arrive. I’m afraid my psyche may not be able to handle the loss of any more prized plant life...😬.

From what I’ve read, the cinnamon along with chamomile is suppose to control fungus like cobweb mold which attracts mold. I’ve added cinnamon and chamomile to fresh seedlings to avoid fungus itself. But I have also added DE and neem meal in soil and top dressed with failed results lol

Best video on gnats. I’m doing the mosquito bit/neem oil thing too. If some people are struggling with getting the oil to emulsify with the water, adding a little dish soap and whisking or shaking it up works. I’ve also found putting plants outside helps with gnats because the slightest breeze can blow the adults away. You’re right about sand, so I’ve put some of my plants in terra-cotta so they’ll dry out better. Like you, I don’t have the patience to bottom water. I hate gnats. They fly up your nose because they are attracted to carbon dioxide.
