You've never seen this side of Texas before! This needs to be seen!
I spent two days exploring Odessa, Texas - a city that's been called the most dangerous city in the USA at one point. How does it look today? We'll find out.

Thankyou Nick , I grew up on a cotton farm outside San Angelo, Texas. No tents and druggies on the streets of Odessa. No fear for the police the locals will move your tent for you I am sure, of it. Real Texans are good people they just want to be left alone. Thankyou for a the nice videos you always give us. I live in Southeastern Washington State for 32 years. Great place , rural type agriculture but it has grown almost too big with Pasco, Kennewick, Richland (tri cities) over 325K now. Was 145,000 when I moved here.

Just living in Odessa is enough to make you turn bad. Freezing cold in the winter, buring hot i the summer. The wind blows 15-20 every day and its as flat as the lunar surface. Most the jobs in the oil business are hard, unless youre an engineer. Im in a bad mood just talking about it and I've never lived there.

Right next to Odessa is Midland, which has zero character, and is perpetually covered with dirt. I'm not kidding about the dirt. I pulled into a major gas station in Midland, and wondered why such a large establishment wasn't paved. Turned out, it WAS paved. The pavement was just buried under two inches of loose dirt. True story.

I grew up in Odessa then left after the oil bust 95/96. It has its ups and downs but it was never a hood where people roamed the streets. Like any city it’s what you make of it or who you hang with. Lots of drinking there. I don’t remember much of a drug problem but it seemed everyone drank.

I attended 1st grade in Odessa way back in the 1950's. We lived in a fairly new housing development - small, nice little homes. Everyone had a fence in their front yard. There were snakes. People would kill snakes & hang them from the fence posts in their front yards. Walking down the street was terrifying to me. The people were kind. I always wondered what it was like today. Thank you so much for this tour. Much, much more frightening that a few snakes. So sad to see.

The Odessa was my grandpa's rig.He brought it out the yard in 77 i do believe. They was drilling off shore of Lafayette, come into 16k. Shut the pipes in the bag on they (now comical) 10k stack. She blew by. My dad was rough necking at the time and uncle Lindsey had just relieved my gp. Anyway. They abandoned ship. She burnt. They had to drill relief to shut her down.

I grew up in this area in 70 to mid 80s. In sept of 85,the America started buying oil from opec,it killed texas for awhile! I went back to odessa and worked for Eagle rock drilling with a friend i know. It just wasnt the same then ,like it was when growing up. But the food for Mexican food is real there still. This is where i got my favorite for real mexican foods. According to this video, odessa is coming back from what i last seen when there. Kermit,34 miles west from there is where i grew up in a christian school mostly and some public school as well. Some of my best teachers i remember was there. Somehow, all the oil smells of texas as a child make me think of it. But since ive moved to Alabama in 1985 when oilfields shut down . Its the fresh smell of pine trees, lakes to fish that have captured my heart. In mind,i will wonder about Texas too. Now,you could not get me back in texas and out of Alabama. Since computers came ,things have changed alot. Looking for that get rich idea on computers has become the new life. The real life is getting out there in this world and finding where your hearts will be. Opportunities is out in this world, you have to decide when its time to go find yours.

Odessa is terrible. I grew up here and recently moved back. The culture gets annoying and even oppressive if you arent all about the oilfield, church, football, rodeos, drinking beer and Mexican food. No high tier tech jobs of course, makes it even more difficult for me, but this smelly shit hole is what my family calls home.

Plenty of tech jobs down the road in Midland. Pioneer, Chevron, ConocoPhillips have a booming tech engineer section. Big push towards integrating and utilizing technology to find ways to extract oil and gas more proficiently. But Odessa, sadly hasn’t caught up.

There was this lady and her dog that worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week for a solid year picking up trash or garbage at all the parks in Odessa . She did not have to. She did it to make a difference and she always had wisdom to give. The City and the Mayor took notice, as did law enforcement. That woman made a huge difference in that town. Taught many, lessons. Nice to hear that Odessa has kept it clean. I'm so glad to hear it that is. Robin Beard. Memorial Day; May 27th2024.

I grew up in Midland, TX, twenty miles from Odessa, so I know the area well. Midland used to be a safe place with nice people. Nowadays, both cities are bad--lots of gangs and it’s best if you speak Spanish. I got out when I left for college and I won’t be going back. e.t.a. Midland is known as the childhood home of George W. Bush. The house he grew up in is on Ohio street, now an area of attraction (tourist attraction?? lol, the Permian Basin is not known for its tourism).

I read a book called “Boom or bust” that interviewed the locals. An interesting fact was how difficult it was dating for local girls since many guys live in the cities in the Permian just to work for a short amount of time therefore had no interest in a long term relationship. As a “Friday night lights” book fan, I loved the experience at Ratliff Stadium. Congrats on another amazing video, Nick! Please invite me to your 1 million subs party 🎉
