To add some context, Sciences Po is a short for "political sciences" in french. It trains our future senior officials/politicians/diplomats, (and sometimes journalist.) That's why they speak so many langages.
I hope you don't mind me correcting you on some of your spelling, I hope it can help you out: ad* -> add futur -> future soletimes -> sometimes much -> (in this case, it would be: ) many "Science Po is a short fort "political science"", to make this make sense, change "is a short fort" to "is short for", therefore making the sentence become: "Science Po is short for "political science" *ad is short for the word advert/advertisement. (Note: I'm not trying to be rude, I understand if you are still learning English :])
It sounds like a place of elitism where you simply go to the right school and you instantly are in a position of power and influence. It doesn’t sound like a very good example of a meritocracy.
Never thought about it that way. Makes sense considering that international relations is a big part of pol science. No wonder I took science, since I'm bad with both politics and languages lol
Meryem is really nice! Her personality is super fun, she speaks a buuunch of languages and dialects, her french sounds 99% native, her english as well, and neither are her first languages... Thats very impressive!
Speaking several languages is not a mark of intelligence, she just passed a lot of time to learn and seems to like it (easier to learn when you like your stuff). Maybe she is awful for maths, history, biology, sport etc.
@@TheRoamine74i know her and she is one of the best students of this school. Not only good in every subject but also a student athlete. Sorry for disappointing 🤷🏻♀️
@@helloworldstars it was just my two cent to say intelligence is not general, and to be polyglot is just a specific intelligence, you are not superior to the others. You can be good at school (learn and apply, be good to follow the conformism of the teaching method) and be bad professionnally, akward socially, immature etc. Here are the types of intelligences: Visual-spatial Linguistic-verbal Logical-mathematical Body-kinesthetic Musical Interpersonal Intrapersonal Naturalistic If you are high in one, you are low in another, impossible to have all.
Typical interviews: people from all over the world who speak three, four or sometimes even five languages, and then comes the odd Anglophone person that is almost guaranteed to be monolingual :D
Yeah it feels like being born anglophone is actually a handicap because the schooling sucks so bad at teaching languages that would allow us to move more freely between worlds that require additional languages. 😑 On the other hand, I do appreciate the subtlety and depth of English. But still, I want to have my cake and eat it! 😂
@@niravelniflheim1858It's not the schools' fault. Our educational systems are _literally_ the same. I was doing paint-by-numbers at age 14 in English class. And look at me now. Do you think I learned English in school from _that?_ It's the fact that American people exclusively grow up on English media with _maybe_ a hint of anime, K-drama and Spanish soap opera. While other countries grow up with a 50/50 share of media from their home, and of American stuff. In small countries, the divide is even in favor of the US media. Only places like France, which has a strong identity and a large industry, can keep up their share of the 50%.
Fun fact: In French, J is pronounced like the G in English, and G like J in English! So at 4:23 when she says something that sounds like CGG, she actually means CJJ (Carrière Judiciaire et Juridique) ^^
Wow amazing video, I had this feeling of "légèreté" the whole time and the conclusion is like a rose you leave to us before saying good bye... Thank you and keep posting !
Dear friend, I loved the video, the French at this university, young polyglots speaking English, German Spanish, Moroccan Italians know a beautiful environment, Ukrainians speaking Russian Ukrainian, the French girl from min 6:16 is too intelligent. Her English, French, Chinese and Russian are understandable and comfortable for those who learn. Sweet and beautiful video quality. Thank you for loving youth and the future of nations and continents on the planet. hugs keep that spirit.
I think many French and Parisian people know multiple languages, at least French and English, lot of people are also interested to learning chinese, Russian or even German haha
Heyyy so interesting... Like that young lady said China and France should 一起工作,关系也不错. Even though I'm not Chinese nor franch but I'm learning both languages and hope to do something about forging the bridge between these two interesting countries...🎉❤
French is a very great language and the French are so nice and friendly. That drove me to be curious about their language. I have been learning French via Immersive translate and i definitely recommend it.
the experience of university between engineering students and the arts majors is night and day 😆I say this quite literally, as many of you actually get to enjoy the sun
In France, we have to learn English and a second language. Most of the time, we have the choice between Spanish and German. Most of us picked Spanish because it's a latin language so it's closer to French than German
I agree, but i think he is being tactful, trying not to put pressure on these students getting them to talk openly. Also women of that age might think you are hitting on them if facing them.
@@ericastier1646 Apparently we live in different cultural zones, in our case it is Central and Eastern Europe - this is interpreted as a disregard for the interlocutor.
@@maciejkwiatkowski7558 and i agree with that it is not the right etiquette but i think he also is doing it for the reason i mentioned. Another example of this is room meeting around a desk where chairs are placed at 90 degrees for two people instead of face to face which is a less pressuring opposition layout.
"I can speak German" "Ho yeah?" "Actually just a bit". Good resume of SciencePo, broad but superficial. Only good highschool students go there but the opportunities for its graduates are decreasing slightly year on year. That's the price to pay for a school that is too generalistic. They had some issues with they Law School that didn't meet the requirements to pass the bar, their journalism and communication tracks have been dethroned by a school at Sorbonne Uni (the Celsa) and so on. However, to their credit, they really opened their entry test for a more diverse recruitment as people criticized them a lot for being an elite reproduction machine and it's widely regarded as a cool move in the right direction.
Personally, I find it much easier to speak foreign languages than to understand speech, It may be easier if you are obviously a foreigner - then they slow down, articulate better and use simpler language. But if you nail the accent, they assume you are fluent and rattle on at speed, dropping syllables and using street language that you don't learn from studying. The easiest thing is reading, because you can take your time and look things up. The hardest thing, even for native speakers, is to write in a good literary style. That's why authors like Conrad and Appolinaire are so remarkable.
@@beatrizchen7033 yeah, in part because some politics aren’t good with the left-sided direction of the school, so they cut the money. But it still one of the less costing schools in France, because it’s still public. Go look to the prize by yourself, and why not come here in France
The half korean girl is really beautiful. She reminds me of an australian friend who's half japanese. They both got the best of both worlds in terms of looks.
Some of those girls are coming from mixed couples, with part of their family coming from Maroc, Algérie or Tunisie, it's quite common in France (colonial history). So you'll find a lot of people talking a little arabic.
@@loloverlord1664 and you were able to establish half of their ancestry how exactly ? One girl was full on morrocan but other than that I don't know where you got that
Sc po was initialy designed to form elite french bureaucracy. It was based on cooptation from upper class. So, since few years sc po open largely to foreign student, but from same social class. Actualy sc po is the main factory of french wokism/liberals.
Sc Po has also opened to students from less priviledged social classes. And it is more accessible than many elite schools. 33% of students pay 0 fees. There are several political sensibilities at Sc Po reflected in the diversity of the students associations. There is currently a narrative from the far right trying to picture sc po as a "red threat" where you would find only "dangerous" wokist and communists . Personnaly, watching the video I had more the feeling of listening to smart and open-minded students than dangerous extremists.
@@EmmanuelJ-yn7wr there is no communist anymore. And sc po is clearly leftish: almost all students association are liberals/woke and they won Last internal elections. Few disciplinary procédure are in instance due to antisemitic threats and blocage with à well known pro hamas organisation. Only facts, not propaganda.
I know that in Tangier they speak Darija, but I also thought they spoke Tamazight. She doesn't know anything about America.
Fun fact, I'm also into languages. At some point I wanted to learn russian because i'm a space and a rocket nerd. Due to recent events, I decided to stop learning Orcish, and started learning Ukranian instead.
yeah, I don't get it either. I feel like graduates from there get good jobs simply because they went to Science Po and often they came from privileged backgrounds. That being said, my father in law went there and he's pretty damn smart.
It surely is. In it speciality, there isn't really more recognized in France. As for whether the actual level of the courses or the students is "top of the line"...that's another question. Which, honestly, could be asked as well for HEC, l'X or even the top British universities. Never went to Sciences Po, but I was suprised how "average" people (me included) are in "top" schools all over the world. At least in HEC and Cambridge.
