It's extremely complicated but here you go: Salford has a second team but it's the rugby league team. The original Red Devils. Their crowds can be fairly low if United are on. Salford City were for your non league fans who are a different breed. The ground isn't in the middle of Salford, it's on the edge . Every town has a team in Greater Manchester. Fans of Bury just come from Bury, etc. Salford is a city in its own right and was before Manchester. You'll get growled at by the locals if you ever say they're in Manchester. However Salford doesn't have a city centre. Town is Manchester, the bus routes etc all go in that direction. The boundary of Salford changed in 1974, you have 'proper' Salford as it's referred to. Where Salford town hall is, isn't in proper Salford. They used to have an S instead of an M for the post code. You have lots of little towns that were deemed in Manchester, now in Salford. It's like in London you have Croydon, Wimbledon that have been swallowed up by London. Going back to the bus routes Salford is in like 4 areas and you can't get from one to the other. For me to get to Salford City's ground I'd need to go into Manchester, get a bus going towards Bury, get off in Prestwich (which is Bury council) and walk back into Salford. The part of Salford the ground is in is really isolated. So the catchment area for Salford City is extremely small. I don't buy into any of this TV Wrexham stuff. There's also no parking near the ground. Neville was looking at moving the club to where the rugby team play. The problem being that it could only have two tenants and Sale (who play the posh version of rugby - rugger buggers) are also there. Salford rugby who the ground was built for (but the council own it) are the poorest out of the 3. This was then looking like the rugby team was gonna swap grounds with the football team. As you can imagine this went down like a cup of cold sick. So there was perhaps a little less warmth towards the football team which probably impacted on crowds. The FC United argument is of course incredibly complex as well. The majority of United fans from Salford despise FC Utd. There was a lot of ill feeling when it was formed and was seen as disloyal. The second season for FC saw them play Salford City twice, once in the cup. As a United fan it was horrible to see reds pitted against each other. Glazer rent boys and Judas scum were sung. The game stopped at one point when some 'Salford" fans went on the pitch with a judas scum banner. The game was a played at the old rugby ground , the atmosphere was very tense and unsurprisingly resulted in violence. So bizarrely they may both be little Uniteds but you'd be one or the other if you had a second local team. However most don't. I don't see anything wrong with a second team if it's non league. Any other type like Celtic and Liverpool, United etc is just a massive no. So I suppose that's what Salford City are, peoples second non league team that aren't non league any more. As it happens I'm moving next month to Prestwich. I was a season ticket holder at United for nearly 30 years but can't manage it being disabled now. I watched a handful of Salford games years ago. I might go because I miss football, but I'll always be United, whose second team is Salford Rugby League. You've done American Football, you should do a Rugby League video. Leeds would be a good one to do.
It doesn't help that Salford is so close to the centre of Manchester, it's bascially absorbed into it, Old Trafford is 5 minute walk from the border of Salford in fact it's closer to more of Salfords population than Salfords stadium is
@@joegilbert3149 yeah and most of that population is closer to Old Trafford than to Salford's Stadium. They have more than a dozen football clubs in a 20 mile radius, 5 of which have been in the Premier League, and a lot of Rugby clubs as well. There is so much choice that you can have a population of 300,000 but divided by all of them you won't have that big a support.
Think it’s important to remember every fan cares and supports in their own way. John unfair to say “no one near me cares.” Just because they aren’t singing or shouting doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t care. You need a mix, you can’t have everyone screaming all game. Every fan will experience the game differently.
I've heard "if you don't go to the games you're not a real fan" several times in my life. It's such a weird opinion to have. I hate being around random people, especially when they are very close to me and i can barely move around. Just because i sit on my couch watching the game doesn't mean i don't care as much as you do.
They came to this game because algorithms tell them turning up to a unpopular team will get them more views, likes and subs. This isn't random, this isn't one guy turning up at a football game by chance. The days of throwing a dart and going to the game are gone, unless that will make them more money of course.
@@helvete983 Oldham 1976 v MILLWALL with Man United thereafter their hiding at Millwall the previous week and they were out for revenge. I got caught up with The United mob in the ground and was singing,as a Millwall fan, United songs NOT realizing my Millwall scarf was showing. lol After the game I knew there would be 3-way trouble in the surrounding alleys so left my mates and went solo around the outskirts of Town and bumped into 15 Unnted who were walking towards me 100 yards away. Luckily,I saw a local Man on his front doorstep and walked up to him and asked him to shout "See you tonight, lad" and I smiled and waved and they assumed I was a local.Phew....lol
I go to Salford a few times a season, it’s super local to me. It’s a cheap ticket and they have live music at full time so a good day out. You can’t deny that the crowd is full of United fans though - you see more United shirts than Salford. Last time I went we made friends with about fifteen Japanese students and there were lots of Americans too. The location is a weird place because it’s in the middle of the Orthodox Jewish part of the city, so unique place for a stadium. Also Lupo’s is the absolute best! Glad you found it.
A mate of mine is a season ticket holder, he's a United fan who can't afford to go old Trafford and his season ticket is sub £200. Most of the drinking is done in nearby Prestwich bout a mile away.
I think you sometimes underestimate how much fun this channel is for a lot of people here. I love Videos like this and honestly hope that you will do this for many years to come!
Dirty Old Town was written by Ewan McColl about Salford, and it's gone on to be recorded by some of the biggest folk groups like the Pogues and the Dubliners
love these lower league vids get to see proper fans enjoying proper grassroots football none of this VAR nonsense or Some clubs having ridiculous amounts of money(great to see John back on the channel)
@@scottm9158 I’m sure there is but they’ll never get the same atmosphere as you get down in the lower leagues. Proper community football where a club brings people together.
Had some good clashes with Salford glad to see them go through the leagues the way they have and still wish them all the best from a Farsley Celtic fan
I’m a Salford season ticket holder on the west stand (Standing Section behind the goal). The west stand is good limbs and all of the seats are very quiet and just full of happy clappers. It’s definitely growing but it’s hard for people to care when most ‘fans’ support Man United and City. Although I will say our away support is good even though the numbers are low. This was a good video but I wish you would’ve sat closer to the west stand to see how it is with the louder fans.
@@JS-id7nd Not on about Plastic fans fella, Irish fans are far from that 🤣 No offence lad but if that’s your mentality of Irish football then you’re in for a big surprise👍
Regarding chants and other personal abuse, it's not something confined to just Salford City fans. I hear it from a lot of fans from multiple clubs that have come to play my team in League 1. We always talk about how football can bring the best out of people but it also brings out the worst. Honestly, I'd be heartbroken if I was subjected to some of those chants.
Completely agree with you. I've been to tons of games and you'll always get a portion of fans who sit the closest to the away fans just to hurl abuse. I don't understand it as you've paid a ticket to watch your team and half the time they aren't even looking at the pitch
I went 2023 and had a similar experience to you From the 2nd minute I was hearing score updates from the United game (and Arsenal weirdly). I didn’t see ‘bullying’ but there was a group having an open conversation that can best be described as ‘crass’ when they were in a family section and surrounded by kids- along with standard football abuse to refs (more acceptable but again - surrounded by kids), and to top it off absolute library. Accrington away fans put them to shame, only thing you could hear.
I would love you to do a follow-up to this about my team, Harrogate Town, who might have an even smaller fan base than Salford. When we played Salford last season on the final day, many fans joked that it was the battle of who had fewer fans. Our ground is also in the middle of a suburban area, but it’s even worse because it’s on a main road, and there is no room to expand the ground. We do have two pubs reasonably close by, though. It’s miles away from Betty’s, yet when Footy Focus reported in 2019 about their 1st round FA Cup match, they did the interviews at Betty’s, which says a lot about the club's lack of identity. The unique thing about Harrogate is that the manager, Simon Weaver, is the owner of Irvin’s son, which makes for awkward discussions about whether the manager is still in this job because of his dad. The bit where people ask you about the Man U score is very relatable to me; people are always asking about the Leeds score at Harrogate. I remember one afternoon when Harrogate won, and as we were clapping the players off, a big cheer went up because Leeds scored a late winner. I have to think that many fans wouldn't bother coming to our games if Leeds were playing. Bradford City fans claim Leeds fans fill out our away section when we play at their place, which I don't think is true, but I think we do get more fans when we play Bradford because of the rivalry with Leeds. Other small clubs that have done well are Forrest Green Rovers (though they’ve fallen away recently), Crawley Town, Fleetwood Town and Burton Albion (who were in the Championship for two seasons). You could also do the reverse, a big club that's now in the lower leagues, Scunthorpe United (top of National North), Torquay United (in the middle of a second spell in the sixth level right now), Hartlepool United (who Rob and Ryan also considered buying) or York City (with their boring ass new ground miles out of the city).
@@Boxag Oh god no you've given many a red years full of comedy. You might be mutton dressed as lamb and a crowd resembling Disneyland but blues are blues, they still give a giggle.
Think it is a jealousy thing. I used to be a fan of Gretna FC in the Scottish division. Following promotion to the SPL the club chairman passed away. The club went into administration and are now a reformed club as Gretna 2008 and play in the lowland football league. As of late they have struggled to sign players due to work permits from England and due to Gretna being on the Scottish border there really isn’t a lot to do. So when you see a club like Salford you do get a hint of jealousy. Any lower league fan would maybe against a massive take over at 1st but would start to enjoy the benefits in the end
In all fairness, Salford were the sort of Man City of non league. They used to get like 50 to a game before they got taken over and now only 10 years later they get over 3k so most of them cant be life long die hard fans
I've got to admit I thought it was just me that couldn't stand Salford. The Nevilles and their mates could have taken over someone like Bury and saved them, though Bury in Red shirts would have looked naff.
6:30 Wigan and Bolton are also technically in Greater Manchester and there are a few big rugby clubs locally (including Wigan) in the area. Also Liverpool is only 30 miles away as well
Salford Red Devils (the original Red Devils) rugby league club is nearer than Wigan. The residential area around the Peninsula Stadium has a large Jewish population. There obviously isn't much attraction for them in watching Salford City. Before Salford got bought by the seven ex-Utd players, Bury was the most popular club, just a 10-minute drive away.
Skelmersdale United. We have a town of over 60,000 residents,we get about a hundred fans on average. Liverpool, Everton and United dominate here. It’s tragic.
Skelmersdale is a bit like Milton Keynes in that it's only really been developed in the last 50-60 years, a lot of families come from Liverpool originally and hand that down from generation to generation.
Not a snowflake at all you're 100% right...football fans can be right weirdos sometimes like banter is banter but to just randomly pick 1 kid out and proceed to slag them off all game instead of actually watching the game is pathetic
I went to Salford City on a bit of a whim when I couldn't get to my own team's away game. I didn't really expect to like it but i was pleasantly surprised. There was a reasonable crowd there and everyone was friendly enough. The atmosphere was pretty good too. Maybe Salford was a vanity project to start with, but it feels like now the owners are simply happy to have a football club for the fans that plays at a reasonable level but doesn't seek world domination.
They're just unfortunate to be surrounded by so many other clubs, many high up in the pyramid. If you're a Man United fan you might go to one of their games but the hype would die down quick. I feel for their genuine fans
I went to Salford to watch Grimsby play them in December and the atmosphere from the home was absolutely dead. Considering the increased away attendance in the EFL, there home attendance has actually dropped since the National League. No way it can be sustainable
Realistically, they are a step 3/4 club who have ended up in league two. This is a similar atmosphere to non league games at step 3/4, its just a local day out, something to do
I remember watching the BBC documentary a few years ago and the they had a loyal passionate supporters group. There seemed to be a real community spirit when they played at their old stadium which seems to have been lost in the new stadium. Also, as in a previous post when the owners are all Manchester United fans it isn't a good look for any club.
It seems as though Salford is the second team for the majority of their fans, kind of explains the apathy towards them. Doesn't help that their owners also care more about another club down the road. Do think the £20 a ticket maybe a bit steep too.
Ellis go to Corinthian Casuals in Tolworth, Surrey. Loads of history! Linked with Brazilian club Corinthians, Manchester United’s biggest ever defeat is to them it’s a great club I played for them back in the day
For the record, Colchester have had massive development just outside the ground. Some are already there at the moment , but here is a list what there will be upon full completion. Northern Gateway leisure park will comprise a new 12-screen Cineworld multiplex with a Starbucks concession, a 20-lane Hollywood Bowl bowling alley, Puttstars adventure golf centre and a wide variety of restaurants including Slim Chickens, El Guaca, Kaspa’s, Joyato Sushi & Grill, Slim Chickens and Taste of Italy.
In London and probably Manchester it’s not unusual to have fans follow a big club and a smaller club. Examples - West Ham and Dagenham. Arsenal & Spurs- Barnet Borehamwood.
You always love your club unfortunately its an unbalanced relationship you love them, you pay and occasionally get something back . More misery than ecstasy but it calls you back for those europhic moments. Thats the hook .
Another issue... Salford City tried to team up with Sale Sharks to force Salford Rugby out of their stadium. Really put a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths.
To be fair that ground is really nice, and there was a decent amount of people in. Its good to have a 2nd team too. Theres so many clubs in the area. I go watching Warrington Town, its a great day out
My first job was in the fairways lodge. Rumour is it may close down which would be a shame as it is also a good little leisure centre. Also dirty old town is about Salford so it makes sense.
Been to watch salford city a few times through uni and the Saturday games are horrific especially when United are on. Midweek matches are a little better but I was able to buy tickets the day before with some of my mates getting tickets on the day for their promotion semi final against Stockport. That being said I think it’ll be a club that will grow through generations, the amount of kids that go is promising and they seem to have a bigger attachment than the adults.
It is a shame, the class of 92 have put Salford on the map, they have invested in to the club to improve the ground which is a good thing. Ok they haven't pumped millions into the team they are playing at that level. What do people want, millions and millions investment?
On the topic of a fan caring, I think that comes with time and if the club can suck you in. Growing up I was a Man U fan and my second club was Sunderland as my grandfather was a fan. I only really checked their position the odd weekend until I went to the SOL when I was visiting Newcastle back in 2016. Now the club is literally my life, I'm in a branch, I budget for home and away games and now I despise United. Also Ellis plz never visit us for a video 😂 I don't want my weekend ruined
You mentioned rushden and diamonds but Kettering town were forced to plan at d&d by Imram ladak and both clubs that where on the verge of the football league both original clubs went extinct
I think the idea that you can't have a second team is because more and more of a lost idea nowadays. With how expensive high level football is many people have a big team and then also have a lower league (usually non league team) which they go to the games due to the lower cost or when the big team aren't playing. This is coming from me, a Gateshead fan, most people at the games are Newcastle first Gateshead second and I think thats completely fine.
The atmosphere at my Canadian Premier League team's matches at a city owned high school football stadium have more atmosphere than this, and the club folded 2 years ago.
