This happened a few weeks ago and I only tweeted about it, so I wanted to provide some context then hopefully move on. It was really scary but I'll be fine. No one was hurt and really that's all that matters. Be safe everyone xx

This is the exact way I wish more people would make their "story times" on youtube, like you weren't dramatic, there wasn't any insane music in the background or weird click bait title and you didn't exaggerate anything. You told the story exactly as it went and how you genuinely felt and thats so respectable, but were also glad you're okay xx

Dogs are a great alarm system! My three dogs are in no way guard dogs but bark at any little noise outside my house and I hope would protect me if someone were to break in. One of my dogs especially is very large with an even bigger bark which would definitely help to ward away unwanted people. Anyone else rely on their furry friends for protection?

Yes :) dogs are great deterrents and make most would-be burglars think twice! My German shepherd is only 8 months old but having him around is a huge comfort because he barks at EVERYTHING lol just be careful and never rely on a dog that isnt trained to protect/attack to save you

I'm very glad you are fine! Don't worry about been a bit scared for a few days. It's just your brain checking if everything is normal again. In a couple of weeks you should feel perfectly normal again. There is something you can do to be more calm: Whenever your mind brings you a "fatal scenario", just think in what could you do to be safer: run, shout for help, lock yourself up and call 911... This kind of reasures your "scared brain" that you have resources to deal with these situations. And that tend to reduce fears 😉

Actually seeing the robber sounds terrifying. I’m sorry to hear you experienced that! My house was robbed 12 years ago. I was 13 when it happened, it was our second week in our new house, and a day after my birthday. My mom & I weren’t home, but we came back to our windows wide open and the house in shambles. They stole my birthday gifts (new iPod, gift cards, etc) and all of my mom’s personal/irreplaceable items. I’ve had severe PTSD ever since. Every time I leave the house I have extreme anxiety about leaving it unattended. Having your living space invaded and personal belongings rummaged through by strangers is such a violating feeling and I hate that the low-life robbers have scarred me for life like that. It’s been 12 years. I’m 25, still not over it. I have nightmares of being robbed again all the time. I can’t have a good time when I go out to a concert or something because my brain is constantly thinking “what if the house is being robbed right now?!” Every time I pull up to my house my mind plays tricks on me and I think I see the front door cracked open. It SUCKS. You’re definitely *not* alone with the PTSD thing. I’m not sure how to work past it though :( I hope you recover from this mentally the best you can. Burglars shouldn’t be able to get away with the mental stress they cause us.

briatthedisco stop replying to me. Let me put this into the simplest form so that you can understand, okay? I don’t care about what you think, I know you have the right to share this kind of stuff, but I just don’t care. I don’t care that your house was robbed. I don’t care that this youtuber’s house was robbed. I don’t even care about this “story time” nonsense. I don’t care about any comment, the comment section is just a place to put your opinions, such as, “wow your videos are amazing, teaching me your ways :)” What is this nonsense you’re trying to write. This may be irrelevant but my house was also robbed. We got all our stuff back. END OF STORY. Don’t reply back I have over 900 emails.

Hey Connor, I wanted to send my love and then comment about your concerns about PTSD. What you're describing is absolutelyyyy what's known as "acute stress" after a traumatic event. It's super duper common, but I know that doesn't make it any easier to cope with as it's happening. It would become PTSD if these symptoms persist for longer than 6 months. I know that 6 months can seem like an eternity just to know if this is going to be longer term or not, but the fact you're in therapy and talking about it bode very very well that this extreme hypervigilance will pass for you. It's ALSO fantastic that you're staying active. One of the hardest things post-trauma is what the nervous system goes through. If you can't expend that nervous energy, it's likely to manifest internally (this is seen in animals, too, not just humans, so yay biology!), so it's excellent that you're staying active, running, getting out, connecting with others and more. It sounds like you have tons going for you to help with a great prognosis, but I know that doesn't make the pain, fear, paranoia, etc any easier in the moment. Tryyyy to be kind to yourself, add in some really good self-care, reality test with friends when necessary and just keep talking when you need to. I'm so sorry this happened to you and hate with how it compromised your trust and sense of security. I sincerely hope it finds you again. We're thinking of you
@Kaalyn_HOW
@Kaalyn_HOW 6 лет назад
Yes, you are correct that it can be diagnosed after one month, it's just that pretty collectively in the psych world, most wait until 6 months to do so. Simply because many really do recover well, on a very normal trajectory, in that time frame, so labeling them with a mental illness so soon can be destabilizing to the healing process (for many, not all, of course). However, many cannot get insurance to approve them to have therapy at all without a diagnosis, so permission to dx was moved up expeditiously so that people can actually get the care that they need if that's a stumbling block for them.

It is sad that it doesn’t matter how much security you have... if someone wants to break in they will be break in. Security systems and cameras and such definitely deter most thieves but if someone has their mind set on it, they do it no matter what. So sorry you had to go through this. It’s one of my worst fears

I loved how you said "I don't want to glamorize this." It shows that you are being transparent and not show boating. I think you are not only brave, but comforting in this situation, I know other people could relate, I sure can. Fight or flight is a very real response. I was sexually assaulted at nineteen, and I remember growing up like “I can handle anything, I’ll kick the shit out of anyone” but when this man started touching me I literally froze and all I could do was say no, stop. I am so sorry Connor. I totally feel for you. I was robbed years ago. The front door was kicked in on my place. A police report was filed. He was captured. He went to prison. The sad part? It was my former neighbor. He ransack my bedroom. He only got a jar of money from me. The police found things from other robberies and my home in his girlfriends apartment. He waited until we and my neighbors went to work to commit his crimes. I am again so sorry. I know how you feel and how this situation impacted you. The sad part now? I have to go through a locked gate, a steel caged door, and a steel double deadbolt locked door. I am glad the police were helpful to you and you had friend help you. Those things impact you. It will for some time. I am glad you are going for help to get through this.

This is like my biggest fear! I have anxiety and I get paranoid every single night before I go to sleep that someone's in my house. I live with my two parents and three pets to it is usually them making noises - plus my house is super creeky for no reason - but I get so freakin scared that I have to check my front door from the top of my stairs like at least 1 per night. It's the worst! I don't know what I would do if it actually happened to me. I probably wouldn't even be able to sleep!

Erin Bond ya you're totally right and I get that! I just meant that maybe the dog might not be enough to heal him. It'll bring tons of love and security in his life for sure. However, though I certainly think it'll help a lot, he might also need to go to therapy along with that. So I didn't mean that he should get rid of the dog once he feels "healed" lol.

The freeze (in nature) is actually when the mind decides that you aren't strong enough or fast enough and 'freezing' works well a lot of the time because a lot of predators detect movement. There is a difference though between 'freezing' and 'shock'.

@briankuhn_ 6 лет назад
CRAFTASTIC DIY depends on the gloves. They’ve proven now that you can still leave fingerprints behind even when wearing latex gloves, for example. Also on the DNA front, if the perp happens to leave behind even so much as a single strand of hair unknowingly and the police CSU team is diligent in finding ALL evidence, gloves won’t matter (unless the dirtbag isn’t in the system)

My counciler told me that there is more than just fight or flight. She said that there are 3 reactions. Fight, Flight, Freeze. In your case your brain was in a flight response, but your body was so shocked that it was a freeze reaction, but unlike most people you got out of the freeze response relitivly quickly. I'm pround!

A few years ago two guys broke into my house. I wasn't even there when it happened, it was on the middle of the day and they got inside from the roof, there was like a little window in the bathroom and they got in. They only took my laptop( but they were somehow nice because I had plugged an USB, my earphones and a graphic tablet, but they didn't touch any of that and just took the laptop and the charger). My dad was just arriving home and he saw them disappearing in the ceiling. Since then I would bring a metal bar everywhere in the house (I would even hide it next to my bed while I was sleeping) . All of that without even seeing them face to face. I was scared and anxious all the time. It was awful.

honestly overall we need to rebalance what crimes get treated how. it's ridiculous how some things that dont harm anyone but the person who did it will get someone jail time but things like assault or burglary are often let off with nothing at all. our justice system has a really messed up idea of justice.

Yeah I have ptsd from being sexually abused in 2016/2017 and it still impacts me today even though it’s been just over a year. I’m very jumpy and hyper vigilant and aware of my surroundings. It’s started to affect me at my job so I had to quit :/ I kept zoning out and feeling all jittery. This situation could be ptsd if he continues to show symptoms a long time later on but hopefully he’s able to talk it out in therapy and find ways to cope so it improves. I had to wait over a year to get a therapist to help me which didn’t help the healing process since it was so delayed 😞

When I was a kid, we came home and a kid, maybe 16, was robbing our house. Instead of calling the police, my mom asked him where he lived and drove him home. Since then, he's turned things around and sometimes comes over for thaksgiving dinner

My mom was gonna give him her bag but instead she punched him with it and he ran off XD

hey connor! the main thing i want to say to you, from my experience, is: please take your time in healing, and don't get embarrassed or frustrated at yourself for taking longer to heal properly than you expect. [ *tw* for my break-in story below, because i know that i had to mentally prepare myself before watching connor's video ] i live in a pretty safe area with three roommates and we had a break-in at our house in april this year. two men forced their way into the house at 3am and then came into my room while i was asleep. i woke up as one was taking my phone from my bedside table and after being silently confused for a few seconds (which honestly felt like minutes) i started shouting and tried to chase after them (albeit somewhat half-heartedly - i think i knew somewhere in me that it might be dangerous to actually reach them). my shouting woke up my roommates and the thieves climbed back out through the window with my phone. what i'm trying to say is i relate to *soo* much of this video - the initial complete confusion and shock, the fight/flight/freeze reaction, the resulting paranoia, the ptsd and jumpiness, it being more traumatic than you think, the frustration because you were finally starting to feel happy, the trying not to dwell on what ifs, the gratefulness to friends, and even joking about it after like an hour and seeing how cool real detectives' jobs are… just so much of what you were saying made loads of sense to me. i am so glad you shared your story, so i don't feel so strange for feeling and doing what i did. anyway, my point is, i hope that you don't try to rush your healing process. i was broken into in april and it's almost july but i still get jumpy some nights. however, apart from having to change the layout of my room, i feel miles better now than i did two weeks after the break-in. it takes time. also therapy helps! (but i think you already know that). i wish you luck on your journey to recovery, and i'm so glad you're physically okay xx

My parents always said to me to never answer the door when you’re home alone when I was younger, but there was a group of older teens in dark clothes that rang the doorbell at every house to see if anyone’s home in my neighbourhood. I answered and they asked if •insert random boys name• lives there, they obviously weren’t expecting me to open the door and weren’t prepared and stuttered and paused while thinking of a name. They were on the news that evening for breaking into my neighbours house. Obviously they were caught and everything was returned to them but sometimes you _should_ disobey your parents... 😂😛
@lani7927
@lani7927 6 лет назад
Pix I probably should have mentioned, I live in a very safe area. There are cameras on the streets, so children play outside their houses, even when it’s dark. I also should’ve mentioned that I have porch, and beside my (double) front door is a huge window, the same size as them. So even if I didn’t open it, they would’ve been able to see inside. I guess I did get lucky because for this reason we don’t keep much in the hallway because people can peak in at any time. I did only open the door enough to see through, as I looked through the window and didn’t know them. I do agree though, I got lucky, but it really does depend on your situation and area. There are easy ways to stay safe with this. Don’t leave boxes for valuables (eg new flatscreen TV) outside your house for the garbage collectors and in view for everyone. Don’t keep obvious valuables near the front door, (or back door, I have a glass back door and so does everyone in our neighbourhood, so if they were gonna rob us, they’d go through that easily).

I was in 4th grade when my house was broken into. That morning I had a weird feeling that something was wrong, but I just brushed it off. However, when we got home (my dad, my brothers and me) and came up to the door, we couldn't hear our cat meowing which scared me a bit. Me and my brothers entered the house before my dad and the first thing I hear is the fridge beeping. Our fridge only does this when it has been open for a long time. We went around the house and saw a lot of things open so we started closing them. When my dad walked into the house we told him and he said to go and reopen everything and go sit in the living room and don't touch anything else. We weren't allowed to go to our bedrooms, we had to sit in our living room from the time we got home to like 9, 10 o'clock at night. The police came and dusted for fingerprints. Our cat was found hiding in my parents closet on the top shelf. I loss a sense of security and I still haven't gotten it back. Anytime I hear a thump in the night, I have a miniature panic attack that someone is breaking in and I can't sleep. I am now in 8th grade. This is still affecting me years later. It is messed up. Even better, they DIDN'T catch the people who did it.

Get a kitty. Quieter and a bit cleaner than dogs if you’re worried about that. Also don’t need much outside exercise if they have things to do inside. Also also any animal can be used to going around (like if you visit friends often) if you assimilate it at a young age. Also also also a cat (depending on its personality) is more likely to hide and mind its own business if someone were to break in so the thief wouldn’t even know they were there. And lastly, it’s just a companion because you seem really lonely.

When someone breaks down the walls of your castle, the walls can be put back up, but it can sometimes be impossible to look around without the irrational fear of them crumbling once again. that sounds traumatic. Actually something kinda similar happened to me recently. A few weeks ago I was getting home from college and I had to slow down to pull into my driveway. I noticed a guy walking down the street near my house but I didn't think much of it. To pull into my driveway, I have to open up an automated gate. So I opened it like usual, not suspecting anything and when I get to the end of the driveway to the back of my house I sit in the car for a while gathering my things to take into the house. When I finally turned around to get out the car, the man was literally standing right there. I guess he followed behind my car when the gate opened. I was terrified, and kind of like you slightly confused. I was thinking in my head like "do I know this man?" He didn't rob me or anything though. But god I was so scared. I was scared I would see him again for like that whole week.

A couple years ago on Christmas morning (at 4:00am) my Dad heard noises outside, so he went to investigate because the previous hear people had moved out ornaments to a house down the street, and he saw someone stealing our JetSki. The people were just hooking it up to their car when he came out, so my Dad started running at them (in just his underwear) and when he got within about 5 feet of them they drove off. Luckily they hadn’t hooked it up properly so it fell off the car.

sounds like he was trying to see if anyone was home to maybe try and break again. that’s very scary, i would have done the same thing, maybe i would have been even more scared that i wouldn’t be able to watch the guy. i’m very glad that your friends mother called the police

That’s not exactly what happened. A few days before we got a random unsigned note saying that someone had looked at our air conditioning because we were having problems with it. We weren’t having problems with our air conditioning so we were confused and didn’t think much of it. When this guy showed up he looked like he has on a uniform and he went to the side of my house with the air conditioning on. He eventually came back to my front door and rang the door bell and when no one answered he got on the phone with someone. At this point he walked past the window near where I was hiding so I just ran but he left soon after that. So I don’t think it was someone trying to break in. There’s a house not to far from mine with the same house number and we occasionally get their mail so I’m assuming he meant to go there and came to my house instead.

There has always and will always be evil out there in the world. I'm so sorry you had to have it inflicted on you, but please remember you WILL get through this and you do NOT have to live in fear. It's just bad luck. Nothing you did or will do can change that. Just be safe.

What kind of security system doesn't immediately blare deafening alarms and call the cops when a window is smashed? Our alarm sets off as soon as someone flips a light switch.

Oscar Magaña he said he didn’t set his alarm this time since he would only be gone a few minutes

Emj Pierson I don't understand why he made a little statement about security systems then. Anyway, this burglary was frighteningly calculated.

Oscar Magaña because if he didn’t make that comment about security systems every comment down here would have been one like yours

KDS I was referring to how he said it could happen to anyone. Well no, not if you set your alarm every time you leave. Regardless, a smashed window should sound an alarm always.

A month ago some people robbed stuff from my garage and since then i've been having trouble to sleep, before i used to sleep like a rock but now every single noise i hear i shake. Someone breaking into my house is literally my biggest fear, because my home should be my safe and sound place, last week i was alone when i heard some weird stuff close to my house and freaked out, i feel so stupid but at the same time im so afraid. Holy shit is good to take this off my chest aah

Well from the sound of it, honey, you probably have Acute Stress Disorder. It's essentially similar to PTSD, but it dissipates much sooner than PTSD does. Therapy will definitely help.
