Cost of the car is recoverable unless it depreciates or you wreck it. No one ever lost money buying a 997 GT3RS 4.0 unless they hit a tree with it. Total cost of ownership less than a Kia Rio... IF you have the half-million to put in limbo.
@@Psythik It's because you can't get service on a Rolls-Royce done anywhere except an authorized Rolls-Royce service center, so they set the cost for maintenance. I remember watching the old Top Gear, where Jeremy Clarkson mentioned that one maintenance job on his Mercedes 600 was 16,000 pounds. James May retorted, "what did they do, give you a Golf?"
You bought a Roller to keep. With recommended "suggested" maintenance this automobile would last a lifetime. That was when this RR was made. Look at it nearly fifty years later. Take care of it and it will take care of you. I've been privileged to drive and be around several of this era Rollers an they're incredibly solid, comfortable, capable, and quiet. Quality is paramount.
What like doors? A front window? The radio was after market, and that ⚰️ didn’t even have power windows ☠️. Only thing worse would be a pair of sketchers on the back seat
The Silver Shadows are inexpensive because - before BMW got the label - they were the most popular RR ever made. Most models before and after sold one or two thousand - the Shadow/T2 sold about 20,000 units. Mine wasn’t expensive to maintain, but it was pricey to run with single-digit mileage and a near 30-gallon gas tank!
@@coleengogerty3852Why? The whole point of the comment is that it gets ridiculously horrible gas mileage. There are older cars that get reasonably good gas mileage.
@@KtotheG Very soft. It used a hydraulic suspension leveling system from the Citroen DS. One of my friends always got a kick from the way it gently lifted up when you put it in park. The chief gripe you’ll hear about the Silver Shadow is that system - it runs through out the car so leaks are a hassle to deal with and the pressure chambers are buried in the V of the engine, hard to get at. Also, I think I’ve heard they don’t make the RR-specific fluid anymore, but there’s probably a substitute.
Those old Rolls also runs using a hydraulic system that once it fails will make the car undriveable, and its extremely hard and very expensive to fix assuming you can still find the parts.
@@zweispurmopped The thing with these old Rollers is that they are far easier to work on than modern cars as they are good old fasioned nut on bolt and electromechanical rather than electronic so as long as you can find parts, then they are a DIY prospect
Not that complicated. Citroen tech it's bulletproof and found in all classis DS and CX models of Citroen. I can understand how American mechanics might be worried but in Europe and the UK, Citroen hydraulics are understood by most classic car experts. I rebuilt the hydraulics on my CX last year, no more challenging than working on brake pipes and a LOT more reliable than air suspension found in Range Rovers etc.
@@alexdrakeus1772thanks to wealth owners around the world, profiteering from short term investment, soon there'll be nothing to hunt and fish. Within our lifetimes
Oh I caught it afterwards when CDs came out car stereo companies made a killing cause it’s like having a factory radio was NOT IT so you had to change it out. I wonder did that face plate come off??
Got the next model, Silver Spur, 40yo, Crewe-built before the split, cheap to maintain because it's so well engineered my local mechanic can do it all with basically spanners and screwdrivers. No fancy trick electronics or sealed units, parts are plentiful (original, aftermarket or recovered). Cheaper to maintain than my (decades younger) daily drive which has OBD2. You can waste your money on them if you like, but if you look after them and don't drive like a jerk, you don't need to spend a lot.
@@CheapBastard1988 Funny you say that, he did his apprenticeship at a Citröen dealer as it goes. Coupled with bottles of LHM+ hydraulic fluid (for the brakes and self-levelling suspension reservoirs) being labelled "for Citröen Peugeot and certain Rolls Royce and Bentley models". A lovely shade of fluorescent green it is, unlike the power steering fluid (pink), engine oil (oil coloured unless it's Duckhams) and the auto transmission fluid (god knows what colour that is, I haven't needed to buy any yet😂).
I've watched a mechanic tear down a Rolls Royce V8 and showed me just how well this car is built! He said this has to be the best made car in the world! However parts are crazy expensive! $1000 just for the waterpump!
This machine Had Air Suspension and electric Seats in the 70s. Engine so smooth, you could Put a coin sideways on the Bonnet and it didnt drop. My former boss owned a snow white corniche Cabrio for marriages in His Hotel, some Times We drove to Aldi with it for the lols
Dad was a Rolls guy ever since he made it in business back in 75. I loved his cars. Especially his old classic ones that now sell for several hundred thousand at auction, or would be shown at Pebble Beach today.❤❤❤❤ My favorite was his white Corniche that he let me drive anytime he sent me out to pick up Chinese food when I just got my license at 17. He had this brown/brown Silver Shadow one you're showing as well. I love and miss you Pops 😢🥺🙏🏼🕊
I call my father pops as well, I don’t hear many refer to their father that way so it’s cool to hear someone else that does. He’s 60 this year and even though I know he’s probably got plenty years ahead of him it still gets to me at times, and posts like this make me appreciate having him around all the more. Sounds to me like you had a great dad, may your pops rest in peace and god bless you and your family! 🙏💯
@@grantdavid9466 thank you. He lived life on his own terms til the day he passed. He brought joy, love, and support to the entire area he lived in with his philanthropy. I was proud to call him my father. 🙏🏼🥰
Ive always wanted one of these, until I was talking to a guy whose friend had one. The brakes were a bit dodgy so they changed the master cylinder at great expense (genuine RR part) and the increased pressure blew every other part of the braking system over the next couple of months (including at all 4 wheels). The total bill was over £8000 (and this was in 2008!). I bought a 1996 Jag XJ instead and took it from 110k miles to 215k with only routine servicing. I still miss it!
Speaking as an auto mechanic, what would blow out is the slave cylinders. There are four of them -- one on each wheel. Each slave cylinder has 4 rubber seals that you replace when you rebuild them. In other words . . . A mechanic can completely fix that Rolls by replacing 16 rubber seals that normally cost under $60 for all 16. Plus the mechanic's labor. (On some exotic cars, there may be 2 on each wheel.)
My neighbor has an old Jag for sale that he bought when it was new. He’s currently selling it for $6k. 1 owner and he’s cool with me because I’m young and knows I will take care of the car and atleast he’ll see his car being drove by a young person who keeps it up to date.
@@DailyTv22 Get it! William Lyons' principles for building Jaguars were Grace, Pace and Space. Smooth, fast when you need it, relaxing, you'll love it. Keep an eye on maintenance and keep a few quid by for bigger jobs and I'm sure it'll be good. Enjoy!
Shaun also robbed his children of their childhood innocence. I can't imagine the final moments of his son who decided to end it all. I thought perhaps he would state his remorse before his execution, not that it would change anything but at least he could've said how sorry he was for what he did and for how many lives he ruined. 😢😢😢
@@iapple6496A friend of mine who owns a garage has a customer with a "classic" '68 RR convertible. I remember him talking about this 30 year's ago. He thought he was being robbed when it cost $1,600 to get an electric window motor over from England. (It wasn't my friend doing the replacement... Maybe Rock Auto has them now! 😂😂😂😂😂)
The biggest problem are the suspension systems, which are a nightmare, followed by the electrical systems (though that tends to be more of an issue in mid 80's models). The other issue is that the most basic parts are insanely expensive because of being a Rolls and because of super-low product volumes.
Well, these days, a lot of what was typically familiar to boomers and gen-x can often identify as something else. These "genuine" footrests may never identify as headrests.
I bought one of these when I was 17 for $4000 in Glencoe, Alabama. Two tone, black on top, silver on bottom, with air conditioning, it was right hand drive oddly enough so it was imported. It helped me pull MAD bitches in college. Still have it with 243k miles on it. I do all my own labor, buy aftermarket parts (not RR branded) fix everything I can and only replace whats necessary and it drives like its new. I always found it funny that Americans are seen as these macho, do anything, independent people but the moment you even CONSIDER telling them they have to work on or maintain a vehicle its the end of the world for them.
American, here. I grew up poor, so I had to fix up whatever I wanted to drive. I ended up even getting a 300SL R129, and loved it 'till the engine knock. I love doing my own work, but I no longer have a garage to do such activities in :/
The aftermarket radio looks tacky. It isn't all that difficult to keep a nicer older luxury car, if it is a good one to start. This one isn't too bad, easier to keep than a Daimler DS420! I have a Packard myself and it isn't too challenging.
@@alwayssearching4760I always pay a lot of attention on the cohesiveness of the interior. radio like that is not an upgrade, it is a disruption, it is a mutilation! It is better to do nothing than this. (just like circumcision. coincidentally, I hate it and I resisted having this done as a child too)
@@rogueranger7989 It has nothing to do with quality of the radio unit itself. Key is the cohesiveness. It can be much better used elsewhere. Given the upscale interior design (despite technology behind is extremely backwards) I have higher expectations for the overall refinement. Just like I view human body as godly art, circumcision disrupts the harmony. Can you imagine a circumcised penis on sculpture? It would look almost as tacky as this radio unit inside this car.
The smell inside of them is fantastic. The leather smells like an very old living room. Also just take a look at the front strut towers. Crazy technology for the time and beefy as hell. That thing uses 12 liters of brake fluid!!!! Which is over 3 gallons
I bet that car from 1978 is cheaper to maintain than modern cars. The trouble would be finding a mechanic to work on it. The other trouble is finding parts.
It's a big pushrod V8 with 2 big SU carbs feeding it and a Turbo 400 transmission. I don't think that too many mechanics would struggle with that. It's the cursed Lucas electrical components which would send you barmy.
The braking system and suspension are also very complicated. If I recall correctly the brakes and suspension are fully adjustable to each wheel so they can be adjusted for unusual usage and have way more parts than a standard setup.
Depends on the car. I have a Peugeot 108 from 97 and it's a very reliable car, an absolute workhorse. Very cheap and easy to maintain because you can access pretty much anything without a lift and it's more fuel efficient than modern cars since it doesn't weigh as much. However some other expensive cars can be a pain to work in... You have to go by brand and by model but tbh Peugeot must be one of the best used cars in the market, no rotten crap anywhere, everything is simple and there are plenty of spare parts anywhere and they aren't that expensive either. Just had a fuel valve replaced and it was like 5€ or something. The only counter is if I get hit well I'm gone hahaha. But older cars drive best.
Man I'm not sure about owning a 70s or newer, but I'm a sucker for the 56 silver cloud. I want one so bad. They just have that classic rolls design and the simple but luxurious interior...........
My father has one - Recently the water pump broke down 1k € It is a nice car, very comfortable and what not - but no one really cared at the classic car meetings I actually got more attention with my very basic 1984 Ford Fiesta L Why? Because people have memories with those cars, they have sort of a connection
I guess it's understandable. The old school engineering, upholstery and woodwork is what attracts the enthusiast I expect. Because it's genuinely cool. But just as a car, modern ones have of course, surpassed it. A typical European taxi cab (like the stereotypical Mercedes E-Klasse) would be more luxurious. And yes, more humble cars carry memories for many more people. I'd be really excited if I ran into a Mk3 Ford Fiesta 1.6GT because it was my first car, or an XR2i or 1.6 Turbo because they were the halo models of the same model.
..gracias Fabrizio por explicar las sandeces de esta española, y por dejarla literalmente "desnuda", por aclarar tanta cosa que salió de sus entrañas y quién sino usted para que nos traduzca. Saludos desde Berkeley.
The Shad was extremely reliable compared to other high end cars of the day. It is a shame that this obsession with reliability being a judgement. The majority of cars have always been reliable if serviced correctly. No car is reliable long term unless maintained.
To be fair, when's the last time you've burned a CD? Personally I haven't done it since 2010. These days it's much easier and more convenient to just stream whatever you want from your phone via Bluetooth. (Also, FWIW that's not the original stereo in the car. If you *really* want a CD player, you can always install an aftermarket stereo like this one.)
@@Psythik I still buy CD-Rs by the 100 pack because I go through so many... I've burned 3 in the last 2 days- Bernstein's 1st Mahler 3rd and Havergal Brian's Symphony #1 (that one spanned 2 discs).
They are only expensive to maintain if you are not a car guy...they are stone age tech, beautifully made, overbuilt and easy to work on. If I had a bit of money (I'm broke), I would own one of these.
Don't kid yourself. Just replacing the brake pads on one of these is 400$. If you need rotors that's 1000$ for generic or 3000$ for OEM. These things aren't cheap to fix.
I have noticed how cheap older Rolls Royces go for. This makes a lot of sense. I am not a big "status symbol car" guy, but I love the look of these things. So elegant and British, haha.
its the case of almost all luxurious car. s class, a8, 7 series, lexus ls, maserati quattroporte, cadillac sts, lancia thesis, citroen c6, bentley arnage and so on. it's all about the maintenance cost. often you can buy used car for a price of few broken parts in it. one of most spectatular lost value had MB W220 cause of nightmare suspension, >90% in 10 years
Heard some years ago that RR’s aren’t terribly expensive to maintain if you do the work yourself. Parts were readily available and reasonable. Perhaps not so true these days
Would be good of he went into the costs of maintenance. Like does it cost $300 per oil change? Are the belts and chains constantly wearing out? Does it require an obscure battery that can't be found anywhere? What exactly is expensive about it's maintenence compared to a car of the same year?
They're expensive to maintain IF YOU'RE STUPID enough to keep the dodgy citreon copy suspension. THAT'S the nightmare with them. You get the aftermarket coil and shocks suspension, they're not unbelievably costly to maintain ONCE you throw a ton into fixing everything. Low maintenance ones are a nightmare, but once everything is foxed, they go YEARS without huge costs. They will have the occasional thing to fix, but the fuel is NOT cheap on these things.
Yesterday, my wife and I were driving eastbound on the H-1 freeway just before the School Street exchange on our way back from Wahiawa in our Mercedes Benz hardtop convertible when we noticed a 1980’s Rolls Royce Silver Spur next to us that was in mint condition. What a great car! 😮
A 1978 Accord? Absolutely not. It may be more fuel efficient and easier to work on, but the Rolls Royce is far and away better in every other category, including reliability. My sister had a 78 Accord and one of my best friends had a 79 and they were both pieces of junk.
The specimen we see in this clip almost certainly has something wrong with it mechanically. A good Rolls Royce or Bentley that has been maintained well can command higher prices on the used car market. If a particular model, such as the Silver Seraph, were produced in limited numbers that can also keep prices higher, too. The Silver Spirit isn’t uncommon for a Rolls so that makes it more attainable, too.
Beautiful car! Just drive it once a week or so to keep the systems working and to keep fuel costs down. You could also probably get a discount on insurance. Please keep her covered and treat her with the TLC she deserves
Almost bought a 1976 RR Silver Arrow, and definitely glad I didn't. Their parts are bullshit expensive, you can't get aftermarket anything for it, and sad to say, they're a common car. Instead, I picked up a custom ordered 1976 Cadillac Eldorado convertible with every option checked off, all fully packaged from ASC back off the production line.
Over 60 percent of all Rolls-Royces produced so far are still on the road today. Do you think that would be possible, if most had a TON of mechanical problems?
6.75L v8 that produces less power than a 5.3. Swap it, put in the GM 10 speed that is smaller than that things 4 speed, and put a Ford 9" under the back. Yeah I know that like 15 grand worth of work, but its way less expensive than servicing that old rolls engine.
All these people thinking they can just swap in a any gm junk and make it work without any headaches.😂 these people have never done an engine swap before. They have no clue
That applies to all high end luxury cars. I owned a bmw and had to sell it, 2,000 for an oil pan, $275 for ONE break rotor. Luxury cars aren’t for everyone, I learned my lesson. Even if you can afford the car, the price to keep it running, is another story, and something to definitely look into before buying one. You can buy a Infiniti, Chrysler, or even ford, Chevy and dodge, and they all make nice looking cars too if you go for their luxury editions, and much more affordable. Sometimes the only reason you pay so much, is because of the name on the car, not what the car can do.
As an ex chauffeur I have driven many Rolls or Bentleys or other cars. These have a better driver seat than many modern luxury cars. The rear seat is comfy as well while in action with The Lady 😂
It's so nice that this car still has genuine foot rests. Nothing i hate more than jumping in the back seat of a car and having to put my feet on those stupid fake foot rests. 😂
An old friend of mine, Chuck Strange, whose business makes parts for drag racers, had a Rolls Royce built for serious desert offroad. Another huy I workefd with in Engieering at Mattel Toys had a siilar Rolls that he bought for a few hundred dollars witha connecting rod sticking out the side of the block. He put in a Chey engine and trans. Under $2000 invested and just as cheap to maintain as a 1970s Chevy pickup.
My uncle has a 67' Silver shadow. He's had it for 30 years and I can confirm these vintage cars are incredibly expensive to maintain. For example the brakes have mechanical linkages that need adjusted. Every system, cooling, brakes, suspension, all different than what you would find in a normal car.
Glorious old-school luxury barge - but the cost of looking after it would soon stack up. Those things ended up cheap over here in the UK too, but there's a reason for that. Still, if I had the money...
I use to do auto glass, for high end cars. We had to do one of these ones through Rolls Royce. Such a pain in the ass. It mustve cost the dude as much as the car was worth in labor..
Here's something I think everyone can relate to I know what he's saying because I bought a 1993 Audi 90S when it was barely 10 years old, and it was terrific condition. It looked almost new when I got it at the time in 2003 for $5500.00 Now the relatable part to the video is that parts for that car were very expensive and I could just imagine what it would be for this Rolls Royce. A water pump cost me $200.00 and that was 2003 prices!
Just swap the running gear with Ford and GM parts every time something breaks and its cheap. That engine block will make a nice coffee table while an LS pushes the car around. You really only need to keep the body and interior RR to get all the benefits.
Well I don’t have a lot of people to share it with, but I do know how to comment. 😂 I just wanted to say now that the video is over…. I think you have a great attitude, especially all things considered. You have tons on your plate. And even the things we all complain about you get over really quickly. It seems like you try your hardest to look on the bright side and count your blessings. I think that’s one of the reasons we all love you so much. Also you let us into your life but you are careful when we do get a snippet like of you guys at the beach to be the opposite of those family channels and not show the face and stuff of the kids. I don’t know. I just think you’re a really really good person. Continued thoughts and prayers. Hugs too.
