The biggest problem for the Mirage is lack of value… if the MSRP were $11,995, it would be a much more attractive value option.

@extralock1045
@extralock1045 24 дня назад
@@theemeralddj1 I agree, and disagree. In 2017 they where on sale marked down to about $10,000. But the general public wanted large SUV's, speedy, very safe, and don't care about fuel. And the people who want a A, to B car don't see much about Mitsubishi, so they get a Corolla instead. But in 2024, the price is $18,000. A lot more, but the price of all cars has gone way up, and with the gas prices how they are, they are selling quite a bit more Mirages.

@@extralock1045 that's true, I just came up with that $6,499 number cause for how the new Mirages are, especially the base base models (and thinking back to Doug's old Mirage review), it seems reasonable to me at least at that theoretical price

@jeffmaas9308 24 дня назад
The Mirage makes sense in its target countries. In South East Asia it competes with many cars that are very simple such as the Toyota Wigo / Daihatsu Ayla or the Suzuki Celerio or the Kia Picanto. In many developing countries used cars simply don't depreciate at anywhere near what we see in North America or even Europe and in these markets a new Mirage is closer in price to a 6 year old Corolla that may or may not have been through multiple flood and natural disasters. I have a feeling that Nissan / Renault are producing as many Mirages as the Mitsubishi plant that produces them can produce and what ends up in the USA is simply their to keep models in the showrooms until they can figure out what to do with the brand and its dealerships.

Though I think Doug saying it does 0-60 in 11 seconds I think he meant 0-40. To get to 60 my guess would be about 16 seconds. He’s right though. The Mirage makes sense in a market like, say, India. New cars are unobtainably expensive, and the government forces older models to be scrapped often. In the US market, every time I see a Mirage, I immediately think of 20 used cars for the same price that are better equipped and more reliable. It’s buying new just for the sake of having new un-farted-in seats lol.
@sachinnair91

@@antiLGTBQ Toyota is against EV's for one reason. They're aware it will effect their bottom line and profits. They're currently Number 1 and are fully aware that this transition could completely disrupt the order of things. Meanwhile Chevy has an electric truck that goes 440 Miles (230 towing) an AWD electric Blazer for 45K and soon an equinox that costs around 30K after incentives. Toyota is going all or nothing with their strategy of resisting EV's. Market share went from 3% last year to over 7% this year, next year its projected to cross 10% market share. While some States, like California, will outlaw ICE vehicles, some red states will not do that as fast. Your mind hasn't even grasped how large cities are going to be able to not only build enough chargers but also handle the load on the energy grid. But Biden lovers don't really think deeply about technology disrupting economies vs virtue signaling that you're saving the environment. You have Brits who are paying so much for electricity now that the gov capped their elec bills at around 5,000 quid or USD 8,000 a year. They shuttered their few oil rigs at sea, their nuclear and bet on Putin, and also tried to go green. Now they are paying the price, with their standard of living. Doug is absolutely right about the Mirage. For about $17,000-$19,000 at current market rates, basically the same price as a Mirage, you can get a dealership-maintained 2020 Honda Fit LX with under 20,000 miles, and it will ride considerably better, be far more refined, will still get great fuel economy, have better handling with accurate steering, feature a more versatile and larger interior with the magic seats and will do 0-60 in sport mode in a bit over 8 seconds. Basically enough to quickly get up to freeway speeds, which is what you want in a commuter car. I unfortuantely had to rent a Mirage last year when I was overseas, as it was the only vehicle left on the lot, and it felt quite sketchy and borderline unacceptable with its acceleration. Especially going up hills, it struggled. I couldn't imagine trying to merge onto a freeway with short entrance ramps, like I-10 through the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County. A 1990 Honda Accord or mid-90's Toyota Camry offers you a far more compliant suspension and ride comfort over this piece of junk.
@extralock1045
@extralock1045 24 дня назад
I actually live in the Los Angeles area, and also travel up to places like Big Bear often. I drive about 77 miles a day, mostly freeway. I've never had an issue with merging, always gets me up to 50-55 at the end of the onramp. I use about 40% throttle, or about 2,500 RPM. Just got back from a 259 mile drive, feel good. Went up to Big Bear on the CA-38, elevation 8,500 feet. I had max capacity in the car nearly, about 750 pounds. It was slow at the top, still made it good. Slow and steady. It can keep up with traffic if you dig into the throttle, but I try to save gas, and keep it about 1,800 to 2,200 RPM. So went about 30 MPH up the hill. But you can go 50-55 if you want. Also the Mirage steering is very accurate, at least mine is. Maybe your rental had bad experiences in the past? Not sure. And the rear seats also fold down, 60/40 split.

Toyota made the bz4x bad on purpose, I'm positive. They didn't want to make electric vehicles for a long time and it seems they made it just to say "SEE? the future is hybrids and hydrogen!" They released the rav4 hybrid almost at the same time to highlight their point even more.
@jaturnley
@jaturnley 23 дня назад
Toyoda and his loyalists almost certainly sabotaged the project from day 1. And, by making such a bad car, they managed to back the new management into such a corner that they had no choice but to fall back to making more hybrids for half a decade or more because they had to start over from zero on their EV architecture. It's the same thing with the PHEVs, Toyoda purposely limited production of the best vehicles Toyota makes rather than sourcing more batteries and retooling factories because he was all in on standard hybrids and hydrogen. There is a reason he's gone now, and it's not hard to see why. He set the company back a decade and reduced their value in the market substantially as a result.

And, it seems they may be right, at least for now. EVs are still very expensive to build, the batteries, for now, still need materials that are nightmare to get and PR disaster and are not viable to replace, the range/charge time is still unsatisfactory and the infrastructure isn't quite there even for today's number of vehicles, let alone if all cars will be EV. On top of that the R&D of EVs took so much resources that the traditional manufacturers who previously had upper hand over Tesla in everything else except propulsion and a giant tablet, are now falling behind even the Chinese, and are struggling to make profits on any market that does not offer heavy government incentives. Meanwhile Toyota end Mazda continue to sell IC/hybrids easily and are waiting for others to do the hard work - when time comes, they're big enough to just buy a supplier that has the tech. In the meantime they can research other tech that nobody else have money for anymore, which might get them upper hand, in case of success.
@Error6503
@Error6503 23 дня назад
How many committees and decision points are there from going from concept drawing to showroom floor and nobody stopped to say "this is just plain awful". It had to be deliberately bad but could you imagine being an engineer assigned to this project ? "We know you're all nerds who like to work on cutting edge technology but make this car lousy in every possible aspect. Benchmark the competitors for range, charge time and acceleration, then make sure this is worse. Make the driver ergonomics so unusable that buyers will dream of the austere Model Y cockpit. And of course make it so ugly that even its mother would take it out back and shoot it out of sympathy. We'll then pass it on to marketing and tell them to sell it for thousands more than anything else ... that should teach a lesson to all those who say EVs are the future".
@jaturnley
@jaturnley 23 дня назад
@@ezustnyil8414 It's hard to contradict something without any evidence to counter it. The Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime are unobtanium, they sell them as fast as they make them. But they don't make many of them, because of Toyoda management decisions about batteries and factory allocation. There's a good chance that PHEVs would be taking a big bite out of HEV sales if they had them to sell, but Toyoda didn't want to prove that battery tech was the future so he made sure they couldn't.

I would say the market is the exact opposite of "no bad cars" but rather a lot of bad cars. Nearly every brand is plagued with engine issues, transmission issues, cheap parts, plastic in place of metal alloys, corrosion issues and failures of the excess amounts of technology in every vehicle. Engines failing with under 1000 miles, transmission shudders and failures at low miles. There really isn't much for A-B cars anymore. The old-school Corolla's, Maxima's, Civics, Sunfire's, Cavaliers, Neon's, Focus' and so many more that were base-level technology, extremely reliable, cheap to drive and maintain and generally just great for those on a budget. Nearly every small car now is boosted, turbo failures are through the roof, top-end carbon build-up in Direct Injected engines. Let's also not forget that the high-pressure fuel pumps and injectors are more inline with a diesel for maintenance cost. Timing issues are rampant across many makes and models. Excessive oil consumption, PCV issues, broken spark plugs, head-gasket issues, water-pump failures it's insane. The number of vehicles I see mechanically totaled under 150k miles is unreal. The one's under 100k miles are even scarier. Longevity is something that many, especially used car buyers, care about immensely. I expect any well maintained vehicle to hit 200k miles without any catastrophic failures. Obviously there are lemons, and how you treat your vehicle makes a world of difference, but I think we are in an epidemic of vehicles that are being made with the cheapest sub-par parts, but being sold at astronomical costs that often don't even make it through the warranty period. There are few (I won't say none) new models that would reliably hit that target on the large majority of their vehicles driving down the road.

We’ve been in a modern malaise era of cars for the past 10 years at least. Everything is about profits for the manufacturers and building the biggest ugliest cars for the lowest cost, and selling them for the highest price possible. All thanks to American consumer ignorance, lack of proper regulation for vehicles deemed as “light truck”, and good ol corporate greed. It’s a shame that modern consumers “only want” fat, top heavy, minivans with sloppy handling, high belt lines, poor visibility, iPad dashboards, 20 cameras and phone chargers, poor fuel economy, complex and expensive hybrid and AWD systems, useless ground clearance, ugly plastic fenders and an average price tag of $50.000, but thats the unfortunate world we live in today. What baffles me even more is that normie consumers just can’t seem to understand that we all deserve better as consumers. Not everyone wants or needs a crossover, and yet some manufacturers are even beginning to take that choice away from us.

I had a 2015 Ford Fusion SE base model and Ive never had an issue with it for anything. It can offroad well, it can go a decent speed, it has great gas mileage, it has tons of space, it was lots of comfortable luxury for a family sedan that seats 5 with almost as much storage as a pickup if the backseats are down. The internals are nearly flawless, the Duratec 1.5l and 2.5l are so reliable and strong that the entire chassis will fall into pieces before the engine needs a replacement. This is one example of cars that we DESERVE to have. I blame idiots for becoming crossover/suv/pickup losers amidst the crumbling economy that is only accelerated by their poor choices

Yup! I drive about 27,000 miles a year, reliable and easy to work on is very high on the list of things I need. And also cheap on gas. Over the past 15,250 miles, I've averaged 51.3 MPG. Lots of freeway driving with some mountain driving. On the freeway I go 55 MPH, but it can go much faster, you can cruise at 80 MPH if you wanted.

As a BZ4X owner myself, it pains me, but he's 100% correct. The range is sub-par, cold weather charging is an absolute joke, the tech offered pales in comparison to other manufacturers. Personally(and I may be alone in this) but I like the styling myself. But the BZ4X is a clear example of a failed EV experiment. All that said, it was a massive upgrade from what I had before, and I love it to bits 😂

Doug, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the current EV market and the values of these newer cars, because I'd say new EVs are pretty terrible buying at the moment. I work in Australia at a Hyundai and Kia dealership. We have brand new EV6 GTs slashed from $110k to $85k, EV9 GT-Lines from $140k down to $116k, 500x Ioniq 5 and 6 models aren't moving at all (and Hyundai is increasing the price for some reason), MG and BYD are doing huge discounts too... Even Tesla is slashing Model 3 and Model Y prices left and right, nobody seems to be buying EV right as the manufacturers have suddenly dropped endless EV choices on the market. I have my opinions that I think make sense on the matter, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Agreed - I think the model Y definitely is a better buy than the Audi for the most part (like sure you’re not getting as good of a build quality and some other annoying Tesla features, but it is 10k cheaper) but I don’t think that is bad enough a sin to be put as the 3rd worst car you can buy imo. If you ignore the fact you can get the model y for less, I think it’s still a pretty solid car.

MKBHD said it best, Teslas have some of the best electric power trains money can buy, PERIOD, but their build quality, interiors, and other fine details that older, more established automakers gain through decades and even centuries of experience are going to be subpar for a while.
