Hi 😊 I am so passionate about this topic and really enjoy creating this content. I want to create another screen/ social media/ technology-related video and I would love to know if there were any topics you’d like me to cover? Or approaches to take? If you have any thoughts or ideas at all I would love to hear them, so reply to this comment! 🦋

Hi 😁, I know it's off topic but I just discover your channel literally 4 hours ago and I love your content 😊. Now let's talk about a new idea : what do you think about "Live with no smartphone, no gps, no internet for 30 days / 1 year"? I hope you'll like this idea 😀 and +1 french sub (yes I'm french 😉).

I deleted my IG account 6 months ago, I've never been happier with myself... but I'm single. While dating I found out so many people believe you're lying if you say that you don't have an account...or they lie to you because you don't have a way to find out. I'll like to see how social media affects the way we interact romantically. In my case, I'm calm because I don't have to worry about that now, but I recognize the future problem.

Great video! You articulate what many of us are thinking. I switched to a flip phone a year ago and i have never looked back. It was as if smartphones had enslaved my mind, i never had a moment alone with my thoughts because i would always pull it out and impulsively scroll through the feed. I feel whole again, in the present moment, in awe of the world around us.

@lauren_hogg
@lauren_hogg 3 года назад
Hey Jaman, I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this and feeling this way. I know what you’re going through. It’s hard because I don’t have all the answers, and I never will. But I want to share some ways I have tried to deal with this issue in my life: Find alternative things to do that produce the similar result. For example, if you turn to a screen when you want to relax, maybe reading could be a good alternative? Or, if it’s when you are anxious or worried, chat with or call someone (I also often feel so much better when I do this. And, if I try and turn to a screen instead, I feel almost worse when I resurface). I also love to pause, hop up and pet my animals when I feel an urge to procrastinate. Ensure you find time to exercise/ move throughout the day. The endorphins you get from exercise are just unmatched. If you are feeling like you can’t sit still, or you’ve had a day or a few hours where you’re just not happy with yourself (whether that’s from too much screen or not), hopping up and moving your body can work wonders. And the more you do it, the more you want to. Block as much as you can on your computer. It’s amazing that you’re managing social media in a way that works for you. This is huge and so many can’t do that. So please, give yourself the credit you deserve here and try not to be so critical. The self-awareness and motivation to make the platforms work for you, is really admirable. In terms of your computer and university, it’s hard. I always found that, when I had some sort of constraint (usually time), I was more efficient as I simply didn’t have the time to procrastinate. So, maybe you try and spend less time on your computer and designate times of your day where you plan to sit down and get your uni work done. That way, you only have a certain amount of time to do what you need to do, so you’ll feel that bit more of an urge to get it done. (Don’t leave things to the last minute or make life horrible for yourself) Study/ work with people. I understand this pandemic may make this challenging/ impossible, but having someone who understands the work you need to get done, and by being in a situation where you are both there to work, always made me less inclined to procrastinate. I hope this helps. It’s a very really challenge that so many of us face, but aren’t willing to admit to ourselves, or don’t think there’s anything we can do about it. So, props to you for taking that step and trying to do the best by you! I wish you all the best ☀️

It's really sad how people are so disconnected. It's bad enough that my nephews are always at a screen all day long now they have their own phones. :( At their age I had a few friends and we were outside playing or listening to the music. Or actually talking to each other without a phone device. We weren't glued to the tv. I wish I never got a smartphone. I have wasted so much time on social media trying to get likes and followers what for?
@lauren_hogg
@lauren_hogg 3 года назад
I 100% understand you here. It makes me incredibly sad to see people in general, but especially young people so consumed. I remember how much fun I had as a kid just hanging out with my friends, and it really hurts to see people not only missing out on that, but developing really unhealthy habits and relationships with screens. I am definitely grateful for the introduction of this technology, because it does have its advantages and uses, but there needs to be a healthier, less addictive option out there.

Just found this video, i LOVE it! I'll send it to everybody who say that i'm just looking backwards! I did quit my smartphone one year ago. I use a dumbphone from 2005 instead. I don't have FaceBook either, but messenger and IRC on the computer. It's a kind of freedom. But it's also a bit depressing when you watch a movie with the family, and you are the only one getting the plot... I have a smartphone for work, but i try to leave that in the office as often as possible. I don't feel like that there is some kind of right for my employer or my colleagues to reach me all day. My closest friends in the office have my private number, and if it's important, we call each other, else, we bring it up in the pause room the next day. I like this present lifestyle a lot more than my constantly connected one. Smartphones are a lifestyle - and all lifestyles are not healthy

Hi Gustav 😊 it’s so lovely to have you here! I 100% understand your experience and those are the kind of examples I found in my life that encouraged me to make this video. It can be incredibly sad and honestly a bit lonely when everyone around you is on their phone. And there’s a kind of sadness I often feel for those on their phones constantly, because I feel they really don’t understand what they’re missing out on; not just the nature/ world around them, but the human connections. Props to you for sticking to what feels right and dictating how you will use this technology. That’s incredibly exciting and I do feel like others will wake up in the near future and get on board with us 🎉 I wish you all the best! 🦋

@@lauren_hogg Yeah, I feel that some people just don't know how to do the switch. I don't know about Austrailia. But here where live, one can barely live without using apps. Cash barely exists anymore. And to park the car, you have to pay a lot more if you don't use the app. But i've calculated that i can park my car quite many times without even coming close to those sums that would make a smartphone pay. So i've kind of planned to maybe make a podcast or something about the practicalities of "the switch". We'll see where it ends I'm also VERY impressed of that, that you are answering comments personally. Big thumbs up from a distant country in the far north

I 100% understand how you feel. For me, it was only when I took a step back from it and saw how consumed everyone else was that I truly realised how addicted and reliant I was. It's a bit of a constant battle, but it ultimately comes down to the fact that I know how much better I feel when I take time away from it or just do other things instead (like catching up with friends, reading or painting!) Starting today I decided to take break from mobile phone for the reason that i started believing that I dont get time for myself but looking back i think that not only my mobile( currently 1 hour screen time on social apps or wasting my time) but also some other factors are affecting my me time.... So finally after a lot of thought i decided to get away from mobile phone to live in the moment... To make a great comeback.... To reset my brain from all the negativities and online societal influence... So i would start to live without mobile for 7 days and write down my experience of not using my mobile phone

Amazing video! I just love it. It is exactly how I feel about social media/smart phones. They changed our society in a way that no one would have imagined a few decades ago. I find it very strange when I'm out with my friends and they are constantly checking on their social media accounts rather than talking to me or actually paying attention to where they go, people around them, cars, etc. Yeah it might be insane not to have a smartphone in 2020, but at least we can delete our social media and simply enjoy life.

Have you found something I could use?
@lauren_hogg
@lauren_hogg 4 года назад
Thank you so much Marc! It's so lovely to have you here 😊 I totallyyyy feel you. I use a smartphone and even though I am aware of my usage, somedays I really struggle with it. I'm still trying to figure out how to best navigate that, as I don't think I'll be getting rid of my smartphone anytime soon, but for now here's a few things that may hopefully help ☺️ 1. Don't use it before breakfast. Just keep the morning time to yourself; you don't need to let the outside world in straight away. 2. On the times you feel addicted, try and just pause and figure out why. There's almost always an underlying reason. For me, I turn to technology when I am anxious and want a distraction. So, when I feel this way I instead try and go outside and play with my dog or do some handstands or something else. I am still allowing myself to be distracted, but I am trying to find a healthier way to do so. Because additionally, if I go on my phone when I am anxious, I almost always feel worse when I get off it (I feel like I'm wasting time, or I find something that is furthering my anxiety etc). 3. Use shock value. Turn on screen time (if you have an iphone) and track your usage). It's always interesting to me because even though I try to be super mindful and I am aware of the affects, I am sometimes blown away by how much I am using the damn thing. So making myself aware really helps remind me of how much time I am wasting and it gets me thinking how I can better spend it 😊

I sooooooo feel you. If this is something you want to do, you can 100% do it. Let's get that clear. You can do it. Now, onto the trickier part: Because of the time we live in, there are certain expectations most people have become accustomed to - so many may not be willing (or super keen) to only connect with you through calls (and face to face etc). However, I would recommend making your thoughts/ feelings on the subject known to those around you and have an open discussion about it - you never know, they may feel similarly. Then, I suggest having a trial run - go for 30 days living the life you describe; the one you'd like to. Chances are, the people around you will have enough time to become somewhat accustomed, you can figure out if it's actually something you may be interested in, and then you can all chat about where to go from here. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best with this! (I took 30 days away from social media, texting and everything except calls on my landline phone, and it was SO good. That lifestyle doesn't work for me currently, but I certainly implemented some structures from it 😊🦋

The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.

When I was in high school about 6 years ago and carrying your smartphone everywhere became a thing I was the only one who still didn't bring his phone to school. It was really authentic and natural to myself at that time. I remember those days as being the last time it was somewhat okay to say out loud that I don't have my smartphone with me. Ever since then society has changed forever, as well as I did. And now as I am looking back I am very uncertain whether we've changed for good...

I agree with you 100%! I’m just trying to find a way that I will be able to connect with people without a smart phone or maybe even other tech, we don’t have a home phone! I want to get rid of my laptop to but that’s the only other way with email or facebook, I’m trying to figure it out! I hope I can! :)

I love your perspective; we don't need devices to connect! I think they can connect us beautifully in some circumstances, but it becomes a problem when it's our only form of connection. Balance is key and I hope you find it! I'd love to hear how you end up resolving this 😊❤️

I totally resonate with you. It's really hard re-discovering life without a screen addiction, to find that everyone around you is still stuck. It feels so lonely and you just want to shake them and help them realise how much better life could be. But, for people to really see the benefits, they have to want a change. If they want it but don't know what to do, that's where we can come in and help guide them 🦋

Hey Araina 😊 I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. Full transparency - this is something I really struggle with as well. Mostly as a procrastination tool. I will definitely look into creating a video on this topic, I think it would be really interesting to dive into my own experience as well as create something that can hopefully help you and others ❤️ In the meantime, I would suggest taking a 3-day social media and youtube break. Being bored is actually such a wonderful thing; for one, it's a privilege that we have the time to experience this feeling and it's also a time where our creative juices are really flowing. Maybe with this time you'll try out some hobbies or connect more with the people around you. At the very least, taking a break from the platforms will be great, because you'll be taking a break from these platforms 😊

@@araina780 You're welcome! Baby steps - try not to be too hard on yourself. Deleting all the other apps is such an awesome step. Maybe have a few periods in the day where you allow yourself to check YT guilt-free, and then shut it off for the rest of the time. The most important thing is that you want to be watching YT without guilt, enjoying it. Otherwise there's no point 😊
