I wanted to make the Italian gown worn retrousse (or the robe a la polonaise as the Met calls it) from 1780, so I bought some reproduction fabric, and sewed it all up! I tried to use as historically accurate a sewing method as possible, though I did use a machine to stitch up any parts that wouldn't be visible from the outside.

Truth is stranger than Fiction: You were colouring in 10 METRES of fabric and then a company calls you to tell you have that they have the fabric you were looking for? Wow.
@lucyj8204

At $230 though ... Suddenly the wool I just bought feels like a total bargain 😆
@ReeniEspino

To be fair, she was coloring the white one and they had the fabric that was correct for the yellow one.
@eraia

It's $230 for 5 meters so ~$46/meter - still a lot but way more reasonable than the 2k+ total I thought it was..!

I don't think any natural fiber obsession can be unhealthy. I'm more of a wool person, but I totally understand. This dress is gorgeous, as are all your projects, and I love seeing your projects! Thank you for sharing the resources you use, its lovely to know about where to look for supplies/patterns/refrences.

Wow, yellow is 900% your color! You look like a ray of sunshine! The dress is so beautiful. One of my favorite things about your videos is that they make me see historical clothes in a new light. I never would have noticed the trim on the original gown if you hadn’t explained it! Very excited to see the hand-colored sister gown as well.

You never seize to amaze me. Dress is beautiful! You are adorable, when you "pose" for the camera during the sewing progress you give a big smile, makes me chuckle. Besides being a doctor, wife, mother, seamstress (with patience to do all that hand sewing), smart, computer and embroidery machine wiz what other talents do you have?

The final gown looks lovely! I personally like that the hips aren’t so massive and round as in the original - it would be rather cartoonish and impractical on most people. Looking forward to the court suit teaser at the end! One small note about the video, I found that the music in the final construction sequence was a bit too loud and made it difficult to understand the narration. Could be my audio, but figured I mentioned it.
@chillinginthenameof
@chillinginthenameof Год назад
I found the same thing for some parts of the video, and that I have to keep putting my volume up and down depending on whether there's dialogue or music playing. The music is definitely a lot higher than the dialogue throughout.

Just learned of your channel from Bernadette Banner. Was watching her video of remaking her wool coat at the beginning of the pandemic and mentioned that you were an anesthesiologist and had your own channel! I am a retired OR nurse. I don’t think any of our anesthesiologists sew, much mess make historical clothing! Your work is outstanding!!!! I do know a OBGYN that has a cross stitch channel - Vintage Cross Stitch Niche. She hand dyes a lot of her own fabrics. Looking forward to watching much more of your channel!

Stunning as always. Had a bit of a chuckle at the end when you showed an Americal Girl Doll. A year ago I had no idea what these were, and then seemingly overnight several RU-vidrs I follow start sewing historically acurate or human sized replicas of their gowns. Looking forward to seeing your take on this new trend.
@beth12svist
@beth12svist Год назад
As a fellow fan of Scroop Patterns but not a subscriber of yours (mostly because I'm generally into slightly different eras and I can only keep up with so much, KWIM?), I am so glad RU-vid decided to recommend this video to me because I had been looking forward to learning more about this project but rather forgot to keep my eyes peeled for it in the general busy-ness of life. :-) (I'm pretty sure Leimomi herself was also excited for it because that shade of yellow is her favourite - and it's now one of my favourites because of her!) That fabric is awesome, and it's great that things lined up for you like that to make the dress a reality! The thing about dress history research is that it's a relatively recent field. So many of these discoveries like what a polonaise dress actually is are relatively recent, so there's a lot of outdated info out there simply because the field is in so much flux right now!

I love it! Love love love! This is definitely one of the gowns I've paused on and admired very much. The poufy back and the fitted clean line of the bodice and the froufrou of the hem and such - and the beautiful fabric. It all adds up to a most feminine flattering gown and you look beautiful in it. Also, your hubby is exactly the right height to pin the sleeves without having to go up on tippy toe and also to sneak in the odd smooch while pinning, which is always important 😊

So cool to watch a piece of history come to life! When you see these dresses in museums (sometimes under low light to protect them) you rarely get a sense of what the colors were really like or how the fabric moved.
