Just before the Korean War, Colonel David H. Hackworth was stationed in the post-World War II occupation forces in Italy and Japan. Enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1946 at the tender age of 15 by falsifying his age, Hackworth immersed himself in the structured life of the military, gaining invaluable experience and training. In Italy, he was part of the occupational forces, where he began to understand the complexities of military governance and peacekeeping. His time in Japan further honed his skills and understanding of military operations, discipline, and leadership. These formative years provided Hackworth with a solid foundation in military tactics and the inner workings of the Army, preparing him for the intense and brutal combat he would soon face in the Korean War.
