You're not alone. What really clinches it is the realization that almost any of her (male) fans would have been better for her than the succession of dirt-bag men she married.

Veronica Lake looked stunningly beautiful in this film. Though a minor part in "I Wanted Wings" she held her own in every scene she was in. You just wanted to look at her and forget anyone else was in the room. She had other memorable films in the years to follow, and had scene stealing moments. Sadly, she didn't age well and had her share of sorrows later in her career and life. Her autobiography "Veronica" gives a glimpse of these things.

Ray Milland was a terrific actor. He could switch easily from a deep drammatic to a light comedian role and viceversa, from british accent to american and viceversa and keep a high level performance.
