I WAS HERE BY GAYLE FORMAN 

For about 11% of the novel I thought Cody was a boy. Then she talked about periods and I just sat there dumbfounded for a about a minute.

*I MADE A MAJOR MISTAKE - I got the main character's name switched up with her friend who committed suicide. Cody is the main character, Meg is the friend that committed suicide. Apologies!

I just finished it today. Even though it dealt with heavy subjects, I thought the relationship was nice so the whole story wasn't about suicide. It just added a lighter element to the story.

I honestly didn't have any problem with the romance. It was so back burner in the story, and, honestly, it was pretty realistic. They became friends first over a shared experience, a shared pain. That stuff really brings people together! It's such a deep, and emotional thing. If it had been more of a focal point, I could see the discomfort. But as it is, it's pretty well done and believable. Like in the Marvel's Ultimates universe (not the universe with The Winter Soldier business), Bucky Barnes (Capt's best friend) and Gail Richards (Capt's fiancee) get married because they bonded over Steve's "death" (Capt. America). It happens. No one else felt it the same way they did.

ahhh I haven't read this book, but I do hate it when an unnecessary romance happens and you feel like the character just needs a hug therefor they make a romantic attachment to someone who would shine far more as their FRIEND

When I read I Was Here, I could not put it down. It's such a good book, and in my opinion, I feel like it was beautifully written like If I Stay and Where She Went. Very heavy topic, yes, but beautiful.

I read this book just a few weeks after it came out and I absolutely fell in love with it. Definitely my favorite book by Gayle Forman so far. I feel like this is a book that would help those who knows someone who had gone through or suffers from Depression understand what it's depression is and what it can do to a person. You're right alongside the main character as she discovers everything she didn't know about her friend.

I definitely felt the same way about the characters. I loved Cody, but I couldn't really get attached to the side characters. I wish I could've seen a bit more development or just scenes involving either Cody's mom or Meg's brother. They seemed really interesting to me, but their scenes were quite brief :P Overall, it was a really quick, interesting read!

I read If I Stay so I could see the movie but the trailers gave everything away and I didn't love it so much. But I am a firm believer that you can't swear off an author with only reading one of his or her books so I can't decide if I want to pick up this one or Just One Day.

I picked it 2Day this would be my first Forman.

I think I will read it but I have like 12 library books to read first and then I need to read the HOO series and yeah... I've still got loads but I will get round to reading it! :)

I agree with you, that romance didn't need to happen and it was kinda awkward. I agree it would be better as just friendship! I've read If I Stay, Where She Went and Just One Day and I have to admit this book didn't seemed like one of her books, but to me it was a good thing because I didn't liked If I stay that much and with this one I was gripped from the beginning. I enjoyed it and gave 4 stars :)

I also don't think it was up to her normal caliber and that is why I am stuck on what to rate it.

I started reading it last night

I got this book for my Birthday and I'm really excited to read it :-) I recommend you read All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. It's a similar topic and is beautifully written but be warned, you'll need tissues.

I really wasn't a fan of the romance aspect either, especially the major part towards the end of the book. It just felt kind of rushed and I don't think it was at all necessary. Other than that, I really liked this book. I read it in less than 24 hours which isn't something I do often but it was so hard to put this book down. I'd definitely recommend it to people who don't mind reading about heavy topics such as suicide.

It sounds like it's a good book. This book reminds me of playlist for the dead. I'm going to buy this book.

Im realyl intrigued by this book. I haven't read anything surrounding suicide before but Im very interested in it for various reasons. Great book review though! Also a question... out of all Gayle Forman's books which are your favourite?

I totally agree. I don't see why a romantic relationship was needed in this story. I think that the book could have been better without this aspect!

I had the same problem with the romance !!!!! It kept putting me off and at times felt forced.

Great review, Jesse! I also did not like the romance. I found it to be completely unnecessary! I really liked how the relationship between Cody and her mom developed by the end of the story. Overall, I did enjoy the book but I definitely liked If I Stay better. :)

Have you read Where She Went (If I Stay sequel)? I liked it SO much better than If I Stay.

I also don't think this was Gayle's best, especially compared to Just One Day which is by far my favorite of them all! I enjoyed it, but I didn't gore ally connect with any of the characters. It almost didn't feel like a Gayle Forman book. I highly, highly recommend Just One Day/Year/Night though! I liked them even more than If I Stay and Where She Went. They were so beautifully written and had relatable characters. It's one of my favorite contemporaries of all time! Anyway, I gave I Was Here 4 stars still!

I was the same about this book that I couldn't put it down but I ended up really disappointed :( there was a great mystery set up and then I don't think it ended up being anything that great. Also I don't think the dad plot line went anywhere. I love Gayle Forman but this book disappointed me. I liked the cat plot line because cats 😄

Aww, it's always a little frustrating when a romance seems unnecessary to the plot of a book. I do love the cover tho :)

Don't think this book will be my cup of day , mostly because of the romance , I don't tend to like it in books. Can anyone recommend a book that deals with issues similar to this book (suicide , mental health , etc ) just without the romance element ? xD
