They did a tv series for hitch hikers guide to the galaxy in the 80s, and they had the original Marvin the paranoid android from that series in this film, he's queuing with the other aliens on the Vogsphere. Also the actor for the original Arthur Dent played the automated message at Magrathea. He also played Arthur in all the radio series they did.

As a life long Hoopy Frood, I have to suggest the book as well as the BBC America Show; Dirk Gently. Hitchiker's guide has been a radio show, book, musical, tv series, and many other incarnations, but the book is pretty widely considered the pinacle (i respect those that like the radio show most, its a banger). Dirk Gently is probably Adam's second most popular book series, and the series has Elijah Wood as a lead and is just fantastic.

Douglas Adams is so much funnier in print, but the movie does have a few great gags. Turning into couches (that's a 3rd book reference iykyk) and yarn are hilarious uses of the IPD. The Guide segments are also very well done and almost verbatim from the book, as is the missile scene.

I tend to agree, although HGTTG was originally a radio play written by Adams. Then it was a TV series, and finally a series of books. Adams also wrote several series of Doctor Who in the late 70's and early 80's, including the infamous _Shada._ He cut his teeth writing with the Monty Python crew.

@tarmaque
@tarmaque 3 месяца назад
@@LordVolkov The first radio series was in 1978. The second radio series was delayed because Adams was so busy with various projects including the first novel, a stage adaptation, the TV adaptation, and being the script editor for Doctor Who. I may have implied that there was a direct succession between the formats, when there definitely was not. The only thing that is certain is it was definitely a radio series _first._ The earliest ideas for it came to Adams in the early 70's So you are correct that the _first_ novel predates the TV series, but by that time the radio series had outstripped the written novels. By the time the first book was out there was a great deal of work done on the TV series. Which was difficult if you were like me and read the first three novels long before the TV series was available in the US at all, and have never had access to the radio series.

Oh, and since you mentioned our donkey friend a few times: "According to the biography of Douglas Adams written by Neil Gaiman, Marvin was originally based on a friend of his, a manic-depressive named Marshall who could only ever be cheered up by his long-suffering wife; he changed the name from "Marshall" to "Marvin" out of kindness. However, after talking about this in an interview, Adams was called by his mother, who claimed that he was totally wrong - Marvin was Eeyore. Adams went to look at some older copies of Winnie the Pooh, "...and blow me down, so he was!" Adams also said that the story he based Marvin on Andrew Marshall was one he'd told so often he no longer remembered if it was true or not." And yes, it's *that* Neil Gaiman who wrote it, before he became Neil Gaiman.

Very sharp mind, he had, Mr.Adams.

One of Douglas Adams books in this series is "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish". They just added it into this film. In real life he was also a fan of Dolphins. One of the best interactions I saw with Dolphins was with Tom Green when he was doing his funny show bits. He was treading water talking about them while one was right next to him and they were both looking at the camera. Tom splashed some water at him. The Dolphin immediately faced Tom with a look that your dog gives you when you bark at them (the oh no you didn't look). The Dolphin then starts using it's flippers and hoses Tom. It only takes a moment for another Dolphin to surface opposite side of Tom and joins in with the use if flippers hosing Tom. Lesson here; don't splash a Dolphin. They will get you back.

Vogons are the burocrats that process the swamp politicians live in! lol A better comparison would be that they are the IRS. They have a form for everything and if there isn't a form for it it can't be done...until they have a meeting, to form a committee, to create a survey to determine if there's a need to take the requested course of action, that will require another committee to process the results and present the findings to the first committee, who will then form a new committee to create the necessary forms for individuals to fill out to get approval for the newly authorized action.

So, years and years ago, I signed up for the Science Fiction Book Club. One of those "Pay a dollar and get 7 books" things. (And then they'll keep sending you them if you forget to respond in time, which as a youngun, my parents were not happy about.) Aside from Barlow's Guide to Extraterrestrials, which is still awesome, and The Chronicles of Amber (which I bought because it was like 15 million pages long and was a great choice for 15 cents), the only book that I remember picking up was Hitchhiker's. Never regretted that choice. It's sitting in my living room right now and it got to meet Mr. Adams at a book signing before his untimely passing. And rarely a week goes by without me quoting this. "“It is worth repeating at this point the theories that Ford had come up with, on his first encounter with human beings, to account for their peculiar habit of continually stating and restating the very very obvious, as in "It's a nice day," or "You're very tall," or "So this is it, we're going to die.""

So you love dolphin’s. Over on the Florida coast, just south of ST Augustine, there‘s a little town called „Marineland“. If I remember correctly it was the first aquarium that had dolphins/shows and the regular assorted sea life. They even had a diver in an old brass pressure suit feed the sharks. They also filmed scenes from the „Creature of the Black Lagoon“ there. And still have some of the movie props on display. Well that was in the 60‘s. Now the place has been turned into a Dolphin research center. You can swim with the dolphins there anytime…for a price of course……Cheers

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe is one thing I wish we could actually have seen in this film; it's at the _END_ of the universe, when the universe is dying, and hops back and forth across the threshold of its final moments, and it has some of my favorite moments in the entire series (the bovine that wants to be eaten, the space ship with paint so slick your eyes slide right off of it, etc). The best part of Hitchhiker's Guide, though, is that there are _several_ iterations of the story, all approved by Adams, and each one slightly different from the other, and all are extremely poignant and genuinely hilarious political commentaries. I really do wish this film had the proper sequels to follow through with the whole story, though.

You should react to the movie Big Trouble (2002). It's an amazingly ridiculous movie that is PACKED with big name actors and a rapper (Heavy D) from the 80s and 90s. It's written by a news paper humor columnist named Dave Barry and Dave Barry has authored a ton of books filled with short stories he used when writing for the paper. They are filled with insane stories that had me laughing till I couldn't breathe. One was a story about the toad licking "craze" from the 80s or 90s and it's amazing. Big Trouble (2002) is a movie that he made and it's like an insane and ridiculous 85 min version of one of his stories.

The original BBC radio series is the best version, followed by the six part TV series in 1981 which only covered the first radio series. It was at the time, expensive and difficult to do, so only one series was made. Adams developed the story into novels too and they've been turned into radio plays so the whole thing is now available as a 'trilogy in five parts'. The movie is disappointing at best, cutting out parts of the original story and lots of jokes are missing too. You ought to listen to the radio plays, they're very funny. The first series, episodes 1-4 plus 5 & 6 subtitled 'The Restaurant at the End of the Universe' were re-recorded for a couple of vinyl albums released in 1979 by Original records and had a limited re-release recently.

I think you should react to One Crazy Summer, as not only is Bobcat Goldthwait in it, there's also a film-within-a-film called "Foam", which is about a dolphin with rabies...
