Ella Mills is an award-winning author, entrepreneur and champion of plant based living. She was the founder of Deliciously Ella in 2012, a plant-based food & wellness platform sharing delicious ways to feel better. Although it originated as a recipe website, Ella Mills has developed the business into a restaurant, a range of plant based food products, an app, a podcast and a collection of best-selling recipe books.
Prior to starting Delicious Ella in 2011, Ella was diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome as well as ehlers-danlos and mast cell activation disorder, which followed four months in and out of hospital. The condition affected Ella’s autonomic nervous system and also meant she struggled with digestive issues, chronic fatigue, a series of infections and a whole host of other symptoms. After being prescribed a cocktail of medication that had no effect Ella hit rock bottom, both physically and mentally.
It was at this point that Ella looked into other ways of managing her condition and turned to whole foods, a plant-based diet, and overhauled her lifestyle.
Deliciously Ella has become a leader in the plant-based space. Together with her husband and Deliciously Ella CEO, they’ve published six best-selling cookbooks, including the fast-selling vegan cookbook ever; a lifestyle app with recipes, workouts and meditations; a central London cafe and several ranges of food products in over 7,000 stores across the UK, with customers ranging from Tesco to Boots, Waitrose and Costa.

Bless her. I have Pots and fibro and it’s awful. It’s such a difficult chronic illness and you feel so ill every day and emotions are literally everywhere. I love Ella and I have followed her from the beginning and she has inspired me on my journey.

I love Ella, sharing her story has helped me so much. I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue and have felt so alone. It's lovely of her to share her journey to help others and her recipes and books have really helped me 💞. I wish the media would leave her alone.

These are so great! I was wondering Grace, would you ever consider doing a podcast with clare press? I think I'd be fascinating to hear you two talk about the nuances of sustainble fashion and degrowth. Might be beyond the scope of this podcast format but I honestly think it would be a fantastic conversation!

It would be have been great to hear Ella's thoughts on orthorexia and eating disorders! Her cook book started a very unhealthy obsession among friends of mine who developed life threatening eating disorders because they became deathly afraid of anything that wasn't sweet potato or chickpeas! It would have been great if some of her writing was more explicit that her word wasn't 'the word' on what works for people and their bodies. Don't get me wrong, I adore some of Ella's recipes and think she is an incredible woman but I don't think her diet is necessarily right for everybody. I get ill if I eat too much fibre and so can't eat alot of her favourite ingredients! This works for her and probably lots of others but I think her books (the first one at least) read as a bible for healthy eating rather than a guide. If that makes sense? :)

Love this episode but I do feel like the health journey wasn’t circled back on? It started with the health journey then on to the businesses but it would have been good to hear more about the link between the health journey and her plant based lifestyle

Same. I eat a plant based diet and have POTS. I don't understand how the diet cured her illness or maybe she's saying it helps her to manage the symptoms 🤔

That was such a joy to listen to! She was really a trailblazer at the time. So much has shifted since then but at the same time, people still feel attacked by someone who promotes healthy eating. Nevertheless, I had the most enjoyable hour, thank you!!
