👉 In this video, I take a deep dive into the M3 MacBook Pro 16 inch, sharing my insights on its performance, battery life, and overall user experience. I am still driving the base 16” M1 MBP, and will for quite some time… At 67 yrs old, I got the 16” for the screen, but there is nothing I can’t do from regular office work to development to AI prototyping… simply wonderful machine…. I wanted what became the 15” MBAir, but it wasn’t available 2 years ago… so I’m hooked on the 16” MBP for the foreseeable future.

They get it all right. Other laptops have a crazy gimmick for marketing. They miss trackpad keyboard and battery. None of those are exciting or marketable. Apple ensures they’ve nailed those fundamentals AND performance. And their marketing is the build quality and design. Best of all worlds! Thanks for stopping by!

My new M3pro MacBook Pro is a miracle. It's just an amazing computing machine. It's my 6th Apple laptop(2 MB airs, and 4 MBpros) and this thing just screams like.a banshee. It saves at least a third of my work time. It's a joy to use. I can't believe how they just make the machines better and better. Hi, I have the MBP i9 16” from 2019, and I’m considering the base M3 Pro 512GB/1T. I am a UX designer, so I mostly use it for design work and Ableton Live when I make music. I use my laptop 95% of the time docked. It’s a shame because it has a nice screen and a fantastic keyboard and touchpad, but I enjoy it even more when I use it outside my room. However, I’m still unsure if I should go with the 14” or 16”. Did you stay with 16”, or did you pick the 14”? Cheers!

I agree with most of what’s you’re saying based on my experience with my latest Mac which is the 15” M2 Air in 8/500 configuration. The build quality and battery life are top notch, and the 3nm process with the new M3 must be an improvement on that. I use the M2 for hours a day and about every 3 days it gets down to around 50%. The trackpad and keyboard are excellent, and it just gets out of the way as you pointed out.

@@sentientsimian Greetings friend! In my situation it has proven more than adequate. I think it is really dependent on what you do and how you use it. For me, doing daily office work, some photo and video editing it works great. I had ordered the 36 GB upgrade, but after watching performance tests on both Max Tech and Created Tech comparing 16 and 32 GB on older M Series chips I opted to save my money, upgrade to the a 12/18 with a 1 TB SSD instead. It does occasionally use some swap memory, but after digging into and getting a better understanding of that, it doesn't concern me. I really love this machine and don't find it lacking at all. Really good video Alec!, I'm currently on an older macbook pro 15 inch(2013) and looking to upgrade either the m3 pro or max. Is the 16 inch very heavy because right now i'm looking at a 14inch. also for the color you have spaceblack looks really clean but does it get a lot of smudges and is the safest option to go with the silver or is it not that bad?
@alec.js_
@alec.js_ 5 месяцев назад
Wow! Great job holding out on the m1 and m2 chips. That must have been hard. I had the 14. And for most users. I recommend that form factor . The screen is plenty. And it’s very compact. If youre going max, I would get the 16, because the max is for a heavy performance focus and you want maximum cooling. Nothing wrong with the 14. But if you are in max workload territory, get the max performance, plus the larger battery. Then again, the computational density of the 14 is crazy. You’re getting a very potent machine. The 16 is heavy and cumbersome at times. I think the 14 inch m3 pro is great for the general user who may need performance from time to time. The battery should be better there as well. There’s something to the space black. It will show fingerprints. They are not intrusive. With my midnight m2 I would “move” fingerprints around instead of clean them, this finish cleans up nicer. If you want as close to 0 fingerprints, go silver. The fingerprints are manageable on the space black. Overall been very happy with the finish. Even have a vid on my channel!

They spend a ton on consumer research. They know how to build an excellent product pricing hierarchy. It’s why I think it’s important that people focus on themselves and ask what they need out of an experience. Don’t bother yourself with specs. I think spec wars cause confusion, buyers remorse. Which is what makes Apple’s stair step economics so powerful, people don’t want to make the wrong decision, so they just max it out as far as they can. Which anyone with any M chip, should feel no buyers remorse. They are all incredibly competent machines. Appreciate it dude. Thanks for watching!

Not sure what rumors are going around for the m4. But Apple will need to change either the design or the performance of the pro chip will likely be a bit increase. I think they are stairstepping. So the M1 Max was the one to buy, then the M2 pro made the most sense, then the m3 max was the winner. So this year I’m curious if the m4 pro is the one they push. I think the chips are so performant, that design is a place for Apple to refresh. But who knows? I’ve got a more recent review of the m3 pro if you’re interested in a deeper dive.

This isn’t even the version of the Mac Book Pro I’m considering. I’m struggling to choose between the 14 and 16 inch MBP M3 pro. Is the weight difference in the backpack gonna be noticeable? I do travel but I also do sit down on the table for a long time, what did the extra 2inch do for you?
@alec.js_
@alec.js_ 5 месяцев назад
You will notice the weight. For sure. If you don’t split screen the 14 is nice. Or if you have an iPad you can sidecar with. Remember, For a while a 15 inch laptop was considered very large, so the 14 still provides a great amount of screen, with a lot more portability. The battery life on the 16 is great. I can sit still and WORK on it a lot longer. Which suits me. If you like being on the go a bit more, I think the 14 is the most versatile form factor. I mostly recommend that one.

Agree so much on your video! After all what I need is a machine that can handle all my workflow without any problem and that's all, the precise benchmark score or stuff like that don't mean a lot to my daily work. I am using a 2013 27" iMac i7 32GB ram 2TB SSD for graphic design work. Was waiting for the new 27" iMac for so long since the Apple silicon was released, but apparently they aren't gonna make a new 27" iMac anytime soon so I am considering buying a 14" M3 pro 11/14c 36GB ram 1TB SSD to use it as my main machine with an external monitor, and use my old iMac as my second machine later on.

It’s a much more finely tuned metric that can’t be deduced to a simple number. Thanks for watching!

Thank you this was exactly the video I needed to see. Just doing a massive compare between which model mac book pro i should be considering to buy shortly. My use case is mainly productivity, Adobe suite, Figma, Camtasia, POwerBi data sets, MS Office + i need to run Parallels Win 11 (maybe 8/12Gb Ram allocated) for some additional work stuff outside of the Mac OS but at the same time as using the MaCOS. I want the 16" as the ole eyes arent what they used to be and many windows open just that much nicer with more real estate to play with. Jumping through the apple configs was thinking a MBP M3 Pro 16" 36Gb Ram 1TB was looking like a sweet spot for my needs. Do you think this would be suitable Alec? I want to look at future proofing for at least 5 years and avoid as much memory swapping as possible for the best experience. Love to hear your thoughts on what external display (outside of apple) you would suggest. Using a PC Win 11 gaming system now with an RTX 3080 which i will keep for the games aspect until apple / emulators catch up. Thanks so much and oh yeah, this was one of the best videos i had watched and love your explanations and personal opinions on this. Onto watching the rest!

Thanks! We have similar set ups. I have an rtx 3080 for gaming as well. I actually run my desk setup with an lg c2 display. Not the most common thing. But it’s a great display. If you need accurate colors, it might not be suitable, I feel like my display isn’t quite neutral. At my creative agency, we run dell ultra sharps I believe. Sounds like you need memory. 36GB is a lot. Not what it used to be. But still, plenty for many. Only thing I would change about mine is getting 1tb instead of 512gb. For your usage, I think 36GB/1tb is great! You are near the base config for a max chip, so, if you want the extra performance, it’s there. But the pro chips are great. My recent video kinda helps users with that choice.

If I somehow developed into a good editor, could the base m3 pro be used for a professional video editor? Or would upgrades ram be necessary? Specs can be overwhelming for many. If you’re going full spec, as in the MAX chip, there’s not much compromise there, and plenty of long term potential! Most people don’t need that performance, a universal long term build is something like 36GB of ram and 1tb of storage. Either m3 pro or m3 max. Both will last a while at that config. CPU and Gpu are very adequate and viable long term. Which is why I frequently mention the M1 Pro. Because it’s still viable today for many.

@alec.js_
@alec.js_ 5 месяцев назад
Yeah. You’d be getting quite a performance jump. The ports are part of what makes it “pro”. That added versatility is invaluable for me. As semi pro. My regular usage is mostly Chrome. Hardly pro, but I get tons of value out of the higher refresh screen, battery life and smooth performance. I’ve think the max chips are there for those who access performance daily. The pro chips are commonly used for general compute tasks. Ultimately, it’s if you want that luxury computing experience and a no compromise form factor for the next few years.

Very good video. You did a pretty good job researching and making this video. Like the opinions you made here! You made a really good point here, where as a lot of big RU-vidrs missed the mark here, you don’t do much benchmarks, kind of just like MKBHD. What matters the most is the experience of a laptop and from what I saw from Apple silicon, they all seemed to do an excellent job at it. As someone who uses an Intel Mac the main issue is the hiccups not even mentioning the heat and how inefficient they are. I think most people are gonna be upgrading from Intel Macs anyways so M3 series of chip should be a really big upgrade in terms of the seamless experience. Keep up the great work mate!

Loving my 14” m3pro pro! No doubt, it’s definitely overkill for my general needs but the excess spec really allows me to stretch out more than the 512/8gig m2 air that I had owned previously. The m2 was great and if I’d had the foresight to upgrade the ram instead of the storage, I’d still be using it. Only really upgraded because I found a killer deal on the pro after Xmas. I manage a small business.. both online and brick&mortar and I have found myself handling increasingly more demanding computing tasks as things progress. So the pro might not be as overkill as it feels for that long!

My config would work great for you, as after effects and fcpx can use memory as you add layers and effects.

I'm struggling with choosing a new laptop from my MBP 13" M1 8GB. I do use Lightroom most of the time while travelling and looking for the 14" but can't decide between the M3 Pro 12Core 36GB 1 TB or the M3 Max 14Core 36GB 1 TB. Sometimes it feels like a better choice to take the M2 Max because of the higher memory bandwidth. Some of the youtubers out there mentioned that the m3 pro i in fact not better than the older m2 which points me to the base m3 max. Some others think that the M3 max has some thermal throttling and fan noise issues in the 14" Macbook, I ruled out the m3 max 16 core because it feels like too expensive for the small performance boost. the M3 Max seems like a good choice for all future AI tasks in LR or probably PS, but still I'm unsure. Do you have any recommendations?
@alec.js_
@alec.js_ 5 месяцев назад
If you wanted the most performance at the best price. Remember that all of the M chips are great. But the M2 Pro is a really good sweet spot for a many. My review prioritizes “thinking about what you use most”. Do you NEED performance EVERY time you use the machine? Is so, max chip. If not, think more about using the Pro chip. If you can set AI Computation to occur locally, M3’s are the ones max being great. Also, synthetic sustained loads are the primary issue in the 14 inch form, your daily use probably won’t be throttled to much. For AI, the M3’s fair better. Both the pro’s and the Max. If you didn’t want to question your choice the m3 max would do it. At a cost. But CPU Monkey Reports that M3 PRO chips outperform M2 Max in AI and ML tasks. It even beats out the RTX 4090 per some publications. Don’t bother yourself with the memory bandwidth. And think about truly perceptible differences. The “no compromise” segment is never cheap. But: Budget-ish no compromises = m2 pro AI/ML no compromises = m3 pro No compromises = m3 max.

I have a 10" iPad I use a lot and love, and once had a 1st-gen, 24" iMac for photo editing and music ripping until the drive died in '22. I'm not a "creator" / vlogger / developer or anything of the sort. I enjoy photography and do photo editing and have been using a Legion 5i laptop to rip a massive library of CDs to FLAC using Exact Audio Copy, stream media, do office work and software-dictate papers and emails. The "issue" I've had with Windows is the almost imminent need to have at least 32gb RAM, a discrete GPU, and a fast SSD, because it seems INEVITABLE that at some point, either MS or third-party software "updates" begin to bog down a Windows PC. It's almost "by design" to obsolete everything that comes out within a year or two by hamstringing the system with glitchy updates and it's driving me nuts. What I want more than anything - and the primary reason I've been looking at Apple for so long now - is longer-term, "it just works" reliability coupled with flexibility of use. My three primary dilemmas are whether to save $$$ by investing in a refurbished M1P or M2P version, the pros/cons of 14" vs 16" for mostly home-based use and 62-year-old eyes, and software alternatives available to the Mac I'm used to with Windows. The 14" or 16" M3 Pro / 18gb memory / 1tb SSD are really appealing but obviously a next-level price bracket compared to refurb'd M2/M1 or Windows. All that said...THIS video is arguably the most sensible, most insightful help I've seen online to-date. You're making the same argument ("a tool that just gets out of your way") many photographers do. A camera that allows the shooter to focus on the subject, rather than obsessing over a myriad of camera settings and missing the moment. Your video helps laptop buyer/owners realign with what matters most, which is ironically the opposite of what many of us do - OCD'ing on specs and what-if scenarios. When I considered many of your points about the primary elements of actual laptop use - screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports as the MEANS rather then the END, it takes the mental gymnastics out of the buying process and distills it into something more tangible. So for that - thanks for this video!

Hey @Alec, I'm new to Macs (still actually don't use or have one) and am needing to get one for my kid whose headed off to university in the fall to study CS (computer science). I am curious if you think an M3 Mac Book Air (upgraded with 16 GB Unified RAM and increased SSD) is sufficient? If not, would the M3 Mac Book Pro (with similar upgrades) be something you'd suggest? And/or if what you'd suggest is an M3 Pro Mac Book Pro (with similar specs). Since I'm not techy enough and am not familiar with the Mac realm, any opinion is appreciated. The lineup I asked about is from lowest to highest price, so that's why I ordered them that way and excluded the M3 Max. Appreciate any thoughts.

I'm going to be linking to your video the next time people ask me why the hell I'm spending so much money on Apple MBP for myself and my employees. Just bought another two yesterday. My employees are just so much more efficient with pretty much everything. The resale value is also great. Just actually really a cheap piece of hardware to own.

We are all on M2s at my work. Great deal, build and battery. Professional appearance. We are a creative agency, so they make sense. Your employees are talented, you want to maximize that. Don’t put an obstacle like a terrible machine in their way. That’s the exact opposite objective of a productive workplace. With you 100%. We had to make this case for our budget requests as well.

Thank you for this review, I have watched several reviews of the M3 16 inch and everything was pointing to replace the M3 with an M2 Max, mainly because of memory bandwidth. If I had my choice I would have gotten the M3 max 16. But I invested in hard drive space instead. My M3 is 36 gigs ram/2 terabyte hard drive.

36/2tb makes sense. I was close to the same. Then I thought about my workflow and how record to an external drive anyways. And that’s where most of my storage would be consumed. There are countless other metrics that make the m3 better too. Everyone is caught up on the memory bandwidth, I get it, but it doesn’t mean anyone should feel this device isn’t adequate. It’s like 10 steps above adequate. Most of the m3 lineup isn’t being leveraged via gaming. But Apple isn’t going to drop gaming after one year. They will continue to make strong GPUs and encourage development. I think the machines will age better than the bandwidth naysayers think. For the average user. I would recommend your config. That way they get a good chunk of storage and memory, things you will use every time. This is in contrast to insane performance that might rarely be used in the max. Don’t know your workflow though.

@@alec.js_ my workflow requires me to have at least 4 windows open at a time. I was also after the M3 max because those machines support 4 monitors. My machine only supports 2 monitors. To solve my problem I was going to get larger monitors.

I have an old 15” mid 2014 i7 2.8hz macbook pro with retina display and it’s time for an upgrade. it has 16gb of ram and 1tb of storage so I’m looking at getting a 14” m3 macbook pro with the pro chip, 18gb ram/unified memory and 1tb of storage to replace it. I do still photography and graphics design and use adobe photoshop and lightroom for editing Raw files. Im wondering if I could get away with the 11 core cpu model or should I just go with the 12 cpu core model because this will be my main computer hopefully for a good long period of time.

Yes the base CPU config will work fine!
