"Regardless of who is right or wrong here"... 3:27 Dude the problem is you should have paddled in the exact OPPOSITE direction. You effectively would have been less in his way had you not trying getting out of his way 😅 Also, there's a whole beach. Why paddle straight into the middle of the crowd to barely straighten out? Everyone deserves to have fun, you should be able to learn and practice but your learning shouldn't hinder other people. A little accountability might do wonders... 4:00 Dude was actually trying to tell you things too, but you were too entitled to listen. Don't sit under people. Don't paddle inside of them. Paddle TO the foam or super wide in the channel. 99% of etiquette is common sense 🤷‍♂ But apparently almost the whole comment section is oblivious too...

@@GivesAMinute I’ve been surfing for45+ years. I think the old fellas probably didn’t handle it well but I think their comments were less about localism and more about safety, both yours and theirs. Thing is, you have every right to learn to surf and have fun. But everyone else deserves to have fun and stay safe too. When I was a learner many years ago, I stayed off to the side and by myself until I had the skill to surf around other people safely. I’m sure you’re a really nice guy with a good vibe and not beyond reason. It’s easy to point the finger at everyone else and think they’re being unreasonable, but I’ve been run over and fin chopped many times over the years by beginners with no control or safety awareness for others. I’ve seen people lose eyes from beginners bailing their boards paddling out and then people behind taking the nose of the board to the eye. Again, I hate seeing a nice guy like you getting hassled, but I’m not sure you have enough safety awareness to fully understand what they were trying to tell you. The fact you were so defensive and closed off to it seemed a bit concerning. In places like Maroubra, there would be no conversation with you; you’d just get a fist to the head (which I’m not in favour of). So in short, I think they were a bit abrupt but the safety concerns they raised were legitimate points. I’d recommend spending some time digging into surf safety and etiquette to have better confidence in the water. It’ll be a better experience for you and other surfers around you. Stay safe and have fun. Don’t lose your good vibes over this 🙂🙏

Yesterday went surfing at my local spot and two 45-50 y olds were surfing the same point. I started peddling for a wave looked to the left of me and saw no one so I went for it. Got the wave but heard no one behind me. Got back in the lineup and a 45 y old started shouting at me and said his mate had preference but straight away in a very aggressive way. So I was like "who" are you talking about because I saw no one ? The guy in question came up and was very friendly actually and explained to me he was on the peak which I clearly didnt see so I apologized but straight away said I don't tolerate the way his friend was talking to me. That guy now started threatening me that I should even try to discuss with them there.... IMO if you start getting pissed for your mate and try to pick a fight, you are not a 45 educated adult , you are a 15 y old shitty teen in a 45 y old body. I got snaked that day , a beginner kept laying in front of me and I almost dropped in on him, ITS OKAY ! Explain them the rules in a nice way so they learn, not being a dick for your boyfriend. Also what I notice is that beginner surfers are really chill and fun because they want to learn and they kinda look up to better surfers, but then intermediate surfers are real dicks it seems... High level surfers become chill again because they are so good at reading waves and people they anticipate. Moral of the story even if someone did not see you, feel free to address them in a respectful manner, because respect is what you will receive back most of the time.

As a older guy 20+ yr skater & snowboarder, learning how to surf has shown me that surfing culture is by far the most hostile and unfriendly sport unless you know people, you're really really good or you're famous. I thought, growing up watching Kelly Slater, that the surf community was as friendly. Not even close. I learned to just be friendly and apologetic helped. Get to know the locals in the lineup and learn the "rules." All that to say that you'll still get snaked and yelled at lol

Been surfing since I was a kid and gotta say you were in the wrong there. If the wave in question was about to break you would have A. Been in a position to go for it ie having adjudicated and turned and paddled already OR B. NOT been directly in the line of any surfer taking the wave. Being aware of your positioning at all times is crucial in keeping things chill out there. Still don't think you deserved the telling off though given old mate wouldn't have made the section anyways. Paddling to his left would have been better. However, even paddling to the right did not really impede his ability to catch the wave. Also he actually was paddling deeper and in front of you. So it was hard to judge which way to go. Either way, you were apologetic and he was way too upset for that. Accidents happen in a moving playing field and even pros will get in the way of other surfers in a lineup. People need to let things go. Especially when you were taking the blame for his inability to catch that wave.

Thing is, yeah.. You could have gone towards the wash, or you could have started paddling earlier. But point is you tried to get out of the way. Sure, it might not have been completely successful and maybe you did ruin it for him.. (amongst other aspects) But before old mate is history, he's problably gonna do the same mistake at least once. Shit happens, you say you're sorry and it's all good. If you did it multiple times, or it was double overhead and injury could occur, then yeah it might be a justified reaction. But on a 2 ft wave? That just speaks of his character and poor surf etiquette, man is insecure and wants to prove his ~shredability~, and will look for any chance to blame someone else for what he's lacking. Very common with the generation of surfers that was in their prime during the 80's and 90's when over-surfing a potato chip was the only acceptable norm. Mutual respect is what it's all about! If that was me and he reacted respectfully, i'd give him priority on multiple waves , but reacting like that can only be handled in one way, which is how you did it. Well done for standing your ground and being respectful.

The ocean is an ever changing playing field. When the surf is on it’s temporary. Only so many waves are available. So when you get beginners without etiquette intertwined with better surfers that are local there is going to be animosity. Always will be. The goal at the best spots is to get the best ride that you can. If you are spoiling that for the better riders it’s disrespectful. Go down the beach and learn on the shit waves until you can respect the riders who’ve put in the years to ride at the best spots. Common sense.

@@GivesAMinute well yes, and no not at my age and certainly not at his age but when I was younger yes when I had no transport and only one place I could surf one place I could surf without dying as I lived very close to what they call the English box and spot M see Ruben and Just Ash, aerial masters! Long ass point Break! Everybody out there is just trying to stay alive. It’s big and it has a habit of doing what are pipeline does to people. My friend broke his pelvis on a head high day and usually the place only starts working once it’s overhead. Probably safer when it’s triple! 😂 going over the falls landed straight on a massive boulder, less than ideal! Mind you us does have it issues with attitude in the water these days. Such a shame I purposely tell everyone drop in if you want party wave bro 😎 But I’m pretty rare ! And 2 foot to care these days with back problems! 😂 I’m trying to grow old disgracefully, whatever works to get you through the tube, master of the upsidedown truck driver🫣😂

@@GivesAMinute pleasure mate, if you’re ever over in the British Isles, give me a shout if you need a place to stop your bored or Suit to borrow we have a nice little novelty wave here or Newlyn harbour wall, which I was hoping to catch this morning, but it took me so long to sort my back out. I missed it! Oh well! Only one person on it! You’d love the south coast to Cornwall everyone is super friendly, even at Saint Agnes these days…….. people are way more tolerant……… Knowth Cornwall Sue a little bit different, but only because there’s way less choice, so everyone keeps all of the secret spots closely guarded but if you’re over and you can only get to North Devon, I’ll drive up and meet you bro!

Cheers to you! Old mate just sucked ass, he can't even do a proper takeoff. You should've stayed at the peak, but don't obey this kind of frustrated man by going away. Just say sorry or "didn't see ya" and that's pretty much it. If he still being annoying just ignore him. In the future just try to be more aware of the surroundings, people are coming from every angle... I hate when this happens, it just ruins your day!

Always wanted to surf, moved to an area with a lot of good surf beaches by chance about ten years ago & finally got around to having a lesson last year, now in my late 30's, went out & bought a board but only used it a couple of times because of the exclusive vibes surfing has, as a total noob the self consciousness & fear of confrontation is a major barrier. Seems like you already have the basics down, not sure I would be as good at avoiding getting in the way when still figuring out how to paddle, balance & control the board.

My advice would be to not be intimidated. Everyone has to learn, the old salty dogs were at that point once in their surfing life too.

I found that pre-emptively condemning oneself is highly effective at stopping this. I remember learning swimming at 24 years of age, getting condescending remarks from masters swimmers; I wrote "I SUCK" with a Sharpie marker on my chest and back, and never got a condescending remark again.

It is what it is, and it's going to be one of those lame things to deal with unfortunately... You did the right thing staying towards the outside, k. Trust me, you can get into a slug fest if they wanted to step it up... Anyway, you'll gain respect by showing respect even though they will shit on you for awhile..... Never cut people off there, and just wait for your wave's. When a wave is there for you, you're at the peak go if you waited your turn in the lineup.

You were too close to him either way. He clearly had priority and his wave was ruined. Vals need to listen and learn from more experienced surfers until they learn how to read a line up.

@@GivesAMinute well mate if there’s another peak go and learn to surf there. If you must surf with experienced guys keep clear rather than floating around in the impact zone. They’ve paid their dues and dodging Val’s is a pain in the neck. Communication helps so maybe start a simple conversation and they’ll be more likely to give you a wave if you show respect for seniority and surf culture in the lineup.

David Davies, have you ever surfed pipeline? It’s neck to neck out there and they don’t let it ruin there waves. He wasn’t a good enough surfer to make that drop, it’s clear and obvious. Also the way he reacted was childish and disrespectful, there’s no excuses for that

You come across just like the sad old cunt in this video. You seem to forget is that 1) everybody starts somewhere, including you 2) even if people do make mistakes, they're mistakes and 3) if you actually had any surfing ability you'd have seen that old guy ruined his own wave by being too deep and not making it past the section.
