I Was Totally Wrong - Should YOU Leave Godox Batteries IN??

In one of my more popular videos, I covered five best practices for keeping your Godox batteries working great. And after many years and dozens of batteries at play, I still have yet to have a Single Godox Li-Ion battery fail me. BUT I needed to put something to the test. Do these flashes draw current from the batteries when off, and if so, how much? Let's find out! And also, absolutely do Not try any of this at home.
Important note: Godox does still recommend removing the batteries from flash units when unused. This advice doesn’t appear in All their manuals, though, for some reason.
One thing I failed to mention (because it's technically beyond the scope of this video) is that it's still 100% best practice to take AA batteries out of anything when it's not being used. After a while, all AA batteries will begin to leak, and the acid inside will cause damage to your electronics, regardless of whether or not there is phantom current draw going on. This is much less of an issue with modern rechargeable batteries, though.

Thanks, Wes. Merry Christmas! I had a V860-ll battery bulge that had only been used and stored in normal indoor conditions. I was very glad it was not in the speed light.

I just had one V860 II battery bulge and it’s been outside the unit. The other one that was in the flash no problem. Both last used a couple of months ago (totally forgot I have the unit at all 😂)

Merry Christmas. I seen your first video. I usually removed my batteries from my flashes and cameras anyway. Your first video reinforced my decision. Mine was based on, if the battery leaked, if the battery got hot and swelled up. I have 3 batteries for my flashes. I do not recharge my batteries unless they are below half charge. Storing lithium Ion batteries like to be at 50 percent. So I only fully charge my batteries if I know I am going to be using more than a half battery, otherwise I just swap out an exhausted battery with another that is only half charged, only fully charge if I am going to shoot a long day. And discharge that battery down to 50 percent. A little anal retentive but that is what I do. If I have to put my flashes in the trunk of the car. I wrap them in an insulated blanket to keep them from overheating and only leave them in the trunk as short of time as possible.

I’m still hesitant to leave anything attached to the ad600 Pro. Low key that thing scares me. 😂

Thank you very much for the correction. Really refreshing to see somebody run tests and go with the data. I wish more scientists would be willing to admit mistakes--or flat out falsehoods. Cheers!

Thank you for a technical approach. For some strange reason my AD200 Pro battery started discharging within a couple of days when it’s inside the flash unit and turned off. It seems to work fine if I unplug the battery. I still can’t find an explanation why it has changed. I remember forgetting to turn off the flash at all, and then waking it up from sleep mode only to find it has not discharged at all.

I keep mine in because I'm more worried about electrolytic capacitor degradation

Glad to see you correct the prior video. I had just watched the prior video and then this one was recommended. My own thoughts were it sounded like FUD, especially with the switch on the side of the AD200. Your charge recommendations don't match my understanding of lithium battery chemistry. From what I can tell aging is based on total charge added to a battery so discharging to 75% and adding a 25% charge twice is equivalent to a 50% discharge and adding 50% once. Li ion does not have the memory effects of other batteries that would benefit from a deeper discharge. Also I am not aware of any issue with storage at 100%. The concern about over discharge is valid.

The new 200 Pro ii has a soft button instead of switch, so back to the drawing board I guess 😂

There is another reason to take battery out. Nothing worse than showing up at a shoot and the flash was left on on bumped on will packing it away. Now I always take the battery out. This ensures that you have a full charge charge at your next gig

What's been getting me is that lately my AD300 has been losing all battery life within a week when placed in the flash unit. I've had this flash for two years, and I've never had an issue, but now, it's draining, and I checked to see if my modeling lamp is off and if everything is shut down when I put it away. Could the battery just be old? It seems to function fine when I use it. It just needs to be charged right before a shoot.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 месяца назад
Yeah 99% chance it’s just the battery is old. It’s a little small given the power of the flash and tends to get stressed hard and worn down over time.
@TheSunnySuttons
@TheSunnySuttons Год назад
So the question begs.... why do people talk about battery drainage and them not charging in soo many photography groups?😳 Never had an issue so far and I've had mine for nearly 3 years although I do keep mine in a dry box. 👍🏻

@WesPerry Год назад
As mentioned in the video, these godox batteries are going to drain no matter what you do. An issue in or out
@HappyHands.
@HappyHands. 10 месяцев назад
if those are lithium , you should never let them be completely drained by leaving them in
@rickjbradbury
@rickjbradbury Год назад
You tend to see posts about battery issues as in the battery has gone to sleep after draining on the AD400 units. I don't have any to confirm this myself. Personally I tend to leave the batteries out with the exception of the speedlites, they stay in as I could not find nay cases for them when I last looked.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry Год назад
If I had to guess, I would say it’s more likely that the battery was run down a bit through usage, and then simply drained the rest of the way through the batteries own relatively high self-discharge rate.
@rickjbradbury
@rickjbradbury Год назад
@@WesPerry Yeah. I honestly think most cases are people not maintaining them correctly.

@@WesPerry My AD400pro battery has the 'feature' that shuts it down completely if you leave it empty for a long time. Refuses to charge at this point and I suspect many users end up buying a new £160 battery. Instead, you have to open up the battery and jumpstart it with a bench power supply - then when it has enough juice the Godox charger will work again. Disconnected from the flash it will completely discharge itself in around 3-4months if I recall.

As a 'seasonal' flash user I can also testiffy to the shocking AD400pro battery palava. I rarely use the unit and if left for more than 2 weeks I've got to disassemble and connect up to a DC lab supply to allow it to charge. Way beyond a large portion of customers skills.

I remove the batteries because of that rare chance of it turning on accidentally.

i have a v860ii & the battery is swollen, it's been out of the flash & in a cool dark place but it sticks in the flash .so new battery ordered
@WesPerry
@WesPerry Год назад
Yeah, any lithium ion swelling and it needs to be taken out of service and sent for recycling. High risk of fire once swelling has started, as it’s often buildup of flammable hydrogen inside the cell(s).

This is strange as my AD600 and AD400/600 pros went so flat that they wouldn't charge and needed opening and hacking, in a few Months in the units during lockdown but the spare batteries were fine.

Awesome video thank you. The details were well beyond my electronics knowledge level! But I have no doubt you are correct. Are there any other items like the camera or accessories where the battery does a significant draw when off?
@WesPerry
@WesPerry Год назад
it's actually pretty common for there to be a significant draw when off, when it comes to modern electronics. This is why it was such a surprise to not find this is true with these particular devices.

You really did some crazy testing. It's winter so ... no weddings. I use godox flashes a lot , and I never had problems with the batteries, except when they are becoming old. Then they don't have enough power to work correctly, and you will have a lot of underexposed pictures. From time to time you should discharge them to bring back the full capacity, espacially the Godox V860 ii.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry Год назад
The problem with a lot of seasonal photographers is when they don’t use their flashes for 3-6 months and get back to find their batteries are toast 🥴 I somehow haven’t even had that happen with my V860ii batteries that don’t get much use anymore since updating to the mark iii units.

I've had several godox batteries expand inside my flashes and can confirm that they are, indeed, a bitch to get out. This is why i recommend they be taken out while not in use. It wont prevent it from expanding but at least it wont get stuck inside the flash
