BayStars is known as a team that has "friendly, easy going" atmosphere, but sometimes it does them disservice as it feels like they don't have the intensity needed to win the championship. Your frustration was totally justified in the eyes of Japanese fans, because we felt the same way watching the play. Thank you for setting the teammates straight. They really needed it.

The difference between the Bauer vlogs and other athlete vlogs is that his feel personal. He includes things that most people don’t see, he talks directly to us, and he holds the camera, which makes his content the best by far. I think it seperates him from other athlete vlogers who don’t make a personal connection and it feels more like a production.

This may be an odd take? Bauer is so studious of his game and his body. Won the CY Young so had American baseball mastered. Watching these vlogs and his openness to learn the difference and strive to adjust to playing in Japan is so a fun to watch. Shows he loves baseball. Yes he makes millions so people will say that. He could have gone there taken 4 mil and did the bare minimum. He loves the game and it shows, grateful he shares his experience, he knows most people will never get that chance. Thank you Trevor

I'm a baseball scorekeeping administrator for a summer ball collegiate league in the States. Basically, I'm the trainer and auditor for official scorers around the league. The running lane is there to protect the batter/runner from getting hit like that and to protect the fielder from hitting the batter/runner. The call was correct and should have been that way as well. You are basically forced to run in the runner's lane in foul territory then step back in fair territory/the bag. Still love the videos and love seeing the differences between Japan and USA baseball.

As an umpire myself, I can see why they may call RLI (Runners Lane Interference). I believe as long as your foot doesn't hit fair territory you're fine (I wouldn't call it if its half your foot off the line). It's a hard thing to call as an umpire and in a situation like this where the ball does end up hitting you as the batter-runner they are almost forced to call it.
@kevinlove2002
@kevinlove2002 11 месяцев назад
Wouldn't there also have to be cause for intention to interfere? Clearly being beaned in the back of the head should not be intention. If that's the case, why don't we have infielders just throwing balls at runners all the time... I mean I'm only a retired highschool ump, but I wouldn't call that an out without intention. He had no idea the ball was thrown at him. I'd call that a throwing error.
@ringosk1
@ringosk1 11 месяцев назад
@@kevinlove2002 Intention doesn't play a part in the rule. Rule 5.09(a)(11) A batter is out when: In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire's judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base, in which case the ball is dead; except that he may run outside (to the right of) the three-foot line or inside (to the left of) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball; Coaches and players should really read the rulebook sometimes.
@timchalmers1700
@timchalmers1700 11 месяцев назад
Is the batter-runner supposed to run in the chalked lane which is in foul territory?
@ringosk1
@ringosk1 11 месяцев назад
@@timchalmers1700 yes, the comment in the rulebook makes it a little more clear Rule 5.09(a)(11) Comment: The lines marking the three-foot lane are a part of that lane and a batter-runner is required to have both feet within the three-foot lane or on the lines marking the lane. The batter-runner is permitted to exit the three-foot lane by means of a step, stride, reach or slide in the immediate vicinity of first base for the sole purpose of touching first base.
@kevinlove2002
@kevinlove2002 11 месяцев назад
@@ringosk1 If thats the case , maybe I should teach the kids I coach to defend by simply throwing the ball at the runners. Make the game dodge ball... I played for close to 25 years from T-ball to triple A. I've read many different rulebooks, as I umpired and coached in many different leagues, I would never have called that an out the way it played out for Trevor, and would have fought it as a coach. Now if Trevor was running backwards and watching where the ball was thrown, and intentionally jumped in front of it, then yes, I see the rule as holding true. However, I believe even though intent is not mentioned in the rule that you are quoting from, we can't turn baseball into dodgeball. You know now that I think about it, In situations with no one coming home, I as a catcher used to shadow runners to first. I never once got a ball thrown to me unless it was a bad throw that the first baseman couldn't pull in. But I bring it up because I suppose by that rule they could intentionally say they were throwing to me for a tag out and just nail the runner and call it interference... Yea, the intent of that rule doesn't hold in my book...

Most comments on the baserunning play are correct there is one point that needs to be added. That is once you established “your” baseline, you can not alter it. Your first strides were outside the line, then you faded inside the line. If you had started in fair territory and stayed in fair territory, then no interference would have been called. Or at least it could’ve been argued. Example some players when bunting run on the infield grass to first. Good job “lift small bunt the ball” Kevin should be proud.
@DylanSmith-pp8ig
@DylanSmith-pp8ig 11 месяцев назад
As an ex first baseman/base runner and a current pitcher, I really think they should implement an extra bag, on the foul side, of first base. It gives the runner a better lane, which in return would cause less collisions and plays like the bunt play you had. As a first baseman I had my leg and foot taken out by a salty base runner. Still have knee problems to this day because of it. As a pitcher on pfps it’d make it much easier to create a throwing lane and go all out on plays where the pitcher has to cover first. They’d have the whole bag to tag instead of just the corner and be able to focus more on the incoming throw. Also as a runner you could dive on bad throws and not have to worry about the first baseman possibly landing on you with cleats.
@vladbach8605
@vladbach8605 11 месяцев назад
It was a right call but I get your point. Runners in that situation are forced to make an awkward movement when reaching the base. The rule should change, and they should make it the softball style first base.

@davidtsang4949 11 месяцев назад
That particular play has always been a point of contention in the MLB. By rule, it's interference but practically, it's not natural for the batter to take that route on the foul side of the line. One proposed solution would to have the bag extend past the line. Aesthetically, it would look weird but that would seem the best way. I suppose they could also alter the rule to allow the batter to run on the fair side of the line but the downside is that it could become even more of a judgement call than before.

Asics is such an amazing company for not only making the gloves with custom paint but also customizing them to you ! Excited to see the other gloves you use and come up with! :) and as for that play at the end, I think you should of been advanced to first. Because, not only were you hit with the throw, but the line only matters on a throw to base from the field or a pickle like tag. When you’d be in a situation of a double play to know which way the batter was going to go. But when you’re hit I think it’s the 1st base and pitchers point to throw it to each other and not through the runners. A good example is, 1st to second doesn’t have a base line. Can’t call him out for nailing that runner in the head lol. It’s if YOUR TEAM hits you with the ball like running well you’re in fair play, that can be counted as an out. THEY have to tag you or the bag with the ball IN CONTROL if opposing, example outfield drops ball after entering glove means that’s not in control. dodgeball is not fair game! haha or strikeout ;) also loved the pitching montage at the end too!

As I understand it, you can’t be to the left of the white line “in play”. You need to be to the right down the chalked “lane”. The angle coming out of the batters box for a RH Hitter looks off for sure and not natural the way they want you to run. Way more natural for a LH Hitter as they can just run straight. Congratulations on taking over 1st place! Love the new gloves. The tan with the blue is awesome.

I did a quick check in Japanese and this is probably out. Only between first base and home base, the fielder basically has priority. The runner only has priority in three-foot lanes. In other words, if you were in the three-foot lane when the ball hit you, you were not out. Without such a rule, you would be able to intentionally go to hit the ball and interfere with the delivery of the ball. This is only when the runner made contact with the ball or a fielder, and again, there seems to be no problem if it was to avoid a hazard. So it seems to me that you were running outside the three-foot line when you bunted the second time, but even if the ball were to hit you there, you could still be out. Although, given the angle of the sending line, I think that would be difficult. It is not certain, so I think it would be more reliable to ask Ryu-san for more information. At any rate, both of your bunts were excellent! Sorry if my English is poor, from deepL.

Big fan of your videos, I am happy to see you got another opportunity to play baseball and wish you nothing but the best. Your very insightful and fun to watch. I did have a question, after watching your gloves review's I wanted to know if you have more options for gloves,color,etc then you did when you were in the states?

If it is the same as MLB rules then your mistake was to cross into fair territory to early. The run started outside or on the line, halfway there crossed into fair territory. Which means the call was correct.

For reference: Runner’s Lane Rule, Rule 5.09(a)(11) A batter is out when: In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire’s judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base, in which case the ball is dead; except that he may run outside (to the right of) the three-foot line or inside (to the left of) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball.

This play has been called wrong or at least, arguably wrong, so many times, that you are just another example. I don't think you should have been out, but we've all seen it before with other players.

@@kcgunesq This was textbook RLI by Bauer. If he had been running where the rules tell the batter-runner to run, he would not have interfered with the throw. The NPB umpires got this one 1000% correct.

Yeah man you’re out there that’s why there are two lines on the first base path that’s where you’re supposed to run in between the lines

In NPB, there is a player named Yamaoto Masahiro who was still playing at the age of 50. I hope for Mr. Bauer to have a conversation with him someday. Also, I believe that you are the only one who has the potential to scientifically maintain top-level performance even at the age of 50.

Rules are rules. If you’re hit with the ball when running in fair territory you’re out. As a pitcher I was always taught to call inside or outside to 1B when fielding a bunt, but also taught as a runner to always run in foul territory for this exact reason
