The Temple of Heaven in Beijing, China has a rich history that includes:
Commissioning: The Yongle Emperor of the Ming dynasty commissioned the construction of the Temple of Heaven in the early 15th century. The emperor ordered the construction after overthrowing his nephew in a coup d'état.
Construction: Construction began in 1402 and was completed in 1420.
Religious ceremonies: The Temple of Heaven was a center for Confucian religious ceremonies for over 500 years. Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties would visit annually to pray for a good harvest.
Construction
The Niujie Mosque was built in 996 by an Arabic Shaykh named Naruding. It was originally built in an Arabic style, but has been renovated and reconstructed over time, and now has elements of Chinese traditional architecture.
Rebuilding
The mosque was completely rebuilt under the Kangxi Emperor (1622-1722).
Features
The mosque includes a main prayer hall, also known as the Kiln Hall, which can accommodate thousands of people. It also has a two-story, hexagonal Pavilion for Observing the Moon, which is said to be where Islamic astronomers calculated the lunar calendar.
