In one of my previous videos, I sort of wrote off the Steam Deck, but after looking into it more I started to realize just how much it could do. It's quickly become one of my favorite game systems I own and in this video, I explore all the things I've done with it. Thanks for watching!

While also not much more expensive, since it phased out the previous models 64gb and 512gb variants, making 256gb the default and having 512gb and 1tb take the place with OLED (at the same price point as the previous models). Also HDR!

I promise you the oled model is totally worth the extra $100. The battery life and thermal performance are also significantly improved with 6nm. The faster ram makes framerates more stable across the board. Also, the 90 hz refresh rate combined with 1000 nit peak brightness hdr make the gaming experience just sooo much more impressive visually and the controls are much more responsive. As someone who owned the lcd deck before upgrading to the oled, I can tell you all these different things add up and the result is top notch.

Great Video! I also own an LCD Deck. But honestly, if I'd buy a Steam Deck now, I'd go for the OLED one. The LCD Fan can be a bit loud sometimes, + the black bars on the OLED are smaller, it has a bit better battery and also 90hz instead of 60. a refurbished 64GB for 280-300 bucks from valve with warranty is a crazy good deal. Just get an extra SD Card and you are ready to go. And if you are brave enough, you can even buy a 1TB SSD for 50-100 bucks.

I find it so funny that the steam deck which is basically an Arch Linux distro, is the thing that doesn't need any configuration and just works out of the box, whereas the windows 11 competitors are the ones that don't work out of the box and need more configuration lmao I also hear the windows ones use up more battery which those models compensate for by having a bigger battery, but then idk sounds like that might mean longer charge times.

Weird way to look at the price difference. The 512GB LCD model saw a price drop of $200 from $649 USD to $449. You're jumping in on a product that anyone else who bought it before you paid $200 more than you did, so saying that an extra $100 isn't worth it for a better screen, higher refresh rate, massively increased battery life, etc., when others paid $200 more for what you got just feels odd.

The thing that makes the OLED deck lasts beyond its hardware is the capability to stream HDR on the OLED from other devices (PC, PS5 and potentially more in the future). When the hardware is no longer capable to drive the games, the ability to stream HDR to the deck at 1000nits extends the longevity of the deck greater than the LCD
@AndyAndyAndy11111
@AndyAndyAndy11111 3 месяца назад
Some other nice things about the OLED that I haven't seen anyone mention is the actual screen size. It's a little bit bigger than the LCD but it feels like a massive difference because the actual size of the Deck remains the same but the bezels get MUCH smaller. Another benefit is the pure blacks from the OLED make games that don't support 16:10 aspect ratio of the deck more immersive. The grey borders from the LCD can be distracting and the OLED fixes that.

Bro has never seen a screen running more than 60Hz to call it "random specs". You have an interesting perspective on handheld gaming. Good video. Not just knocking you, but everyone who does this. Why would you play AAA titles handheld on 30-ish FPS. It is a horrible experience. Purposely locking your frame to 30 while it can perform higher isn't so bad, but if your system can only produce 30 fps it feels so. much. laggier. Especially something like Elden Ring in which timing matters a lot.

I've had my steam deck for a few months and out of any trackpad I have ever used, Valve nailed it. I absolutely HATE trackpads with a burning passion, yet the one on my deck is palpable, making it the best trackpad I've ever used. Plus, I really like how I was able to get a discount by buying a refurbished deck from them. Absolutely love how when they have enough refurbished ones they resell them for a lower price. Potential cosmetic damage was not gonna stop me from enjoying the purchase. And yes, while the OLED version is a much more improved version of the handheld, I wasn't gonna be able to justify that over a cheaper refurbished system. So far the only problems I've had are one game I have (Isles of Sea and Sky) will throw an error once in a blue moon, causing me to have to force close the game, having to do some IT magic to reset the root password for desktop mode because I forgot it, and a single plug-in managing to cripple my ability to access desktop mode.

I never had the Steam Deck LCD but I do own the Deck OLED, ROG Ally and Legion Go. All three of them are great and my Ally and Deck get the most attention. The fact that the Ally is the most comfortable in my hands is one of the reasons why I go after it the most but it's battery life isn't great and gets similar runtimes to the LCD Deck when TDP is identical. Deck OLED gets really nice battery life especially with some light tweaking like TDP limits or frame rate caps. You'd be surprised how much longer the Deck OLED gets in battery life over the Ally. It lasts longer for two main reasons. For one the battery is 25% larger than both the LCD Deck and Ally and the other reason is because valve actually shrunk the die. This means the APU is actually more efficient than the LCD Deck. This means even better than 25% gains in battery life with the same settings. Much like with the Mariko Switch vs the OG Switch, battery life is 50% to up to double the run time of the original LCD Deck. Plus it has faster RAM meaning that game performance can be up to 10% better. Not trashing on the LCD deck though as it's great. I think it's perfect for those who are unsure about the deck and don't want to invest a ton Also going to have to disagree about PC gaming. PC gaming isn't all too expensive and a good mid range PC can be easily gotten for under $1000. No need to spend thousands when most don't. Most common builds are of mid range PCs, just like the consoles.

Late to the party, and look, I get it, I'm a cheap bastard 95% of the time, and if you had bought the $399 SD, no issues as $150 savings is solid. And with that in mind, I probably would have gone for the refurbished model, for even more savings, but once your at just $100 between the LCD and the OLED, that's just not that big of a difference for all the upgrades you get. So the lesson here is, if your going to be cheap, be cheap and save the most you could save, buy a cheap SD card for more storage and your good to go. But to pass on what is pretty much an improvement of literally everything on this device for just $100, all I can do is SMH.

Congrats on your buy! The Steam Deck is an awesome device, but have so many "hidden features", I can tell you at least 2 you didn't mention: 1. If you like physical collections, you can hotswap microSDs full of games as cartridges (and then organize your games that way to have complete collections: For example, the complete Witcher trilogy can be installed in a single 128GB microSD). 2. When docked (or anywhere really), you can sync any Bluetooth controller to work as input for any game, will all inputs including touchpads, gyro and grips if available, and yes, this include both your joycons as a single controller with additional side buttons (the mini shoulders act as L4 to R5).

I wouldn’t necessarily agree with trying to use microSDs as game storage even though that sounds pretty neat. Load times will likely suffer. Not by much. But any game that relies on a lot streaming data as you move like ratchet & clank, Spider-Man or Minecraft(probably) will experience slowdowns. I see it being a better options on older games that came out during the hdd or early sata ssd days where load times on many games loads quickly even on hdds. 100mb/s speeds is the max microsds can go. At least with current prices. It’s cheaper to get a 2tb 2230 nvme and pop it in the deck than a 1.5tb sd card. I see using the sd card as backup when you exhausted your 2tbs and need more storage

@@suiton20 while there is a performance degradation (mostly on writes, that affects mostly updates and installs) if you get A2 microSDs, in-game performance drop is negligible, even in newer games. And also I can certify even games as newer as MK1 or Suicide Squad run just fine under the same conditions. To be technical, it is because: 1. SteamOS handle installation directories and shader caches in internal memory always and 2. It uses a far more robust FS that NTFS (that is way too index intensive for it's own good): ext4. So seriously, don't assume it is the same as using a microSD under Windows, because it's more akin to memory management on the PS or the Switch (but better because, again, you can hotswap them).

I have the steam deck dock. I do not recommend getting one until valve fixes the issues on the dock or recalls it entirely. For whatever reason the dock falls back to USB 2.0 speeds instead of leaving them at 3.0. With Mike experience it’s been a 50-50 if USB 3.0 functions. I have tested this with my dock and a friend dock. Unless we just got incredibly unlucky, and they both came from the same batch steam support refused to acknowledge the problem because I am supposedly not using the dock the way it’s supposed to be used oddly enough HDMI and display port seems unaffected.

To somebody like me it's not w big deal to have lcd or oled, I'm not that into gaming where it takes up most of my life so I'm counting pixels and what not. I can't really tell the difference in quality of picture probably because that doesn't matter to me as long as it's not trash I'm good. And battery life is no issue because i have enough powerbanks to keep it going as long as i want. So the lcd model is more than enough for what i need. You guys can't speak for everybody because a lot of us agree with him, oled is not necessary or worth the price.

I don’t get the comments on this video, I have both an OLED and A LCD, the difference isn’t that great. My wife uses the LCD (512 $380 new from Valve) as it was my gift to her for my birthday. And I use the OLED. The performance difference is not as big as you think running the same games and if you have a good screen it’s not bad either. Just get a Steam Deck it doesn’t matter which one.

Not worth it if ur an “at home” gamer? Brother, I have 1 feature that will prove this wrong. It’s the “pick up, play for a lil, put it down, come back, move to the kitchen, play during zoom call, play casual point and click game with the touch screen while eating, bring it to bed, then connect to dock, stream to my AR glasses, AirPods, and my DualShock so that I can play the games lying down staring at the ceiling with a lightweight controller I’m holding comfortably over my belly” feature! It’s my favorite!

One of my favorite features is that I can remote play on my PlayStation with the Deck. I've got my PlayStation and Xbox on the living room TV so it is convenient when I want to play Fortnite with my three sons; one on the Switch, one on the XBox and TV, one remote playing the PS on the Deck, and me on my PC.

Another appeal of the lenovo legion go is that it has usb 4.0 which will allow you to buy a dock to connect GPUs to it externally and make it much more powerful. Its pretty neat, but considering mini PCs which you can get for like half the price have this as well, and comparable/better specs, its.... eh. Got a use case but I'd rather get a mini pc or wait on the next version of the steam deck to come out.

Does the steamdeck actually beat every other console? no... it does not, not by a long shot if you are strictly talking about performance/overall graphics power. What it does do is make the absolute best portable gaming experience for games that you'd never think would ever be portable. It also gives tech loving gamers a fully open system to tinker with if they so choose, which you can't exactly do with any other console. Oh, and if you're in a pinch and need a desktop system while you're miles away from home and all you have is a deck... yup, you're covered... No other console gives the user as much freedom to experiment and customize their system. This level of customization and compatibility from the deck is why it is my favorite gaming device, even whipping my Switch out of it's top spot.

ok lets clear up a misconception 16:13 the Ally that's "starting at $400" is terrible and won't play hardly any games besides old games or low end emulation (like N64 and older) and if it is a new game, it has to be games like don't starve, the binding of Isaac, and Stardew valley. you can forget about 3d games. the $400 Ally is so much of a performance drop its actually about the performance of a Nintendo Wii U. but with windows taking up recourses making it weaker

'Just playing Steam games' is a weird negative remark to provide though. Steam has the largest games store out there, on any platform. Also, the OLED model is definitely worth the additional cost. The screen is gorgeous and has fantastic HDR/90hz, but most importantly the battery has double the duration of the LCD and the system is lighter to hold. I've been playing Kingdom Hearts on it today and at 90fps I get over 7 hours in battery, heh. (Not a new game per se, just saying.. the battery issue is solved with the OLED and I no longer have to worry about it.)
@apersonontheinternet8006
@apersonontheinternet8006 3 месяца назад
Plus you can remote play on your PlayStation via WiFi, can play Game Pass remotely (like Stadia so isn't the greatest experience), and can emulate virtually everything else out there. Also hear that Valve has or is working on getting third party launchers to work properly.

Lol, I see a future video in your future with the title “I was wrong about the Steam Deck OLED…” The upgrades over the LCD are massive, and easily worth $100. Many of them aren’t even listed, such as being able to wake the Deck from sleep with a BT controller, you know, like any other modern console. And the OLED screen on the Deck is miles better than the Switch OLED. I have both and the Deck is bigger, brighter, faster and has HDR.
@svenstylesz

If you want to buy a new deck, buy the OLED. It's not that much more expensive and offers more for the money. The longer battery life and the quieter fans are a blessing. It's a different story if you want to buy used. Then the LCD is a good deal because you can get it very cheaply. I would just consider how you feel financially. You'll have fun either way.

I ordered an oled yesterday!! Really excited to replace gaming on my old laptop with it. At first i was worried about "what if they announce a steam deck 2?" And realise they wont be around until 2025-2026(When they become readily available) and maybe 2027-2028 when they get a revised model like the current Oled. So i think staying with my upcoming one for 4-5 years until a much more upgraded model like the current oled is to the first steamdeck is perfect with me

if your thinking about getting a steam deck get the lowest model OLED, not only are you getting a better screen and battery life but you can also get an anti glare screen protector if you happen to be playing outside a lot on amazon, plus there is the ability to upgrade the internal storage to something even larger than the 1tb model, i would only get a LCD if you are really unsure about handhelds and want to test out whether its something for you, the used market for them is really good so if you end up enjoying the LCD you can always sell it and get a OLED model later on

Now if only it was available everywhere! But no it's only available in The United States, Europe, the UK and Asia. Everywhere else in the world good luck even if they're territories of places it's already available in. It's good that competitors have been able to take advantage of this but they usually come with Windows which is not suitable for handheld gaming so we have to install a third-party OS to make it like a Steam Deck. The only recently announced alternative that sounds interesting is the upcoming Orange Pi Neo which will come pre-installed with Manjaro Linux gaming edition instead of Windows 11. Personally I have the Lenovo legion go and just like the ROG Ally it has problems but they've been hard at work to improve them but when you install a secondary OS or replace windows all together which is what I did it becomes a much better alternative than the Steam Deck. The OS I recommend for this is Bazzite OS which is based on Fedora instead of arch. There is also Chimera OS but from what I heard before installing it Bazzite OS is much better on handheld devices and the best handheld devices supported on their website are the steam deck and the Lenovo legion go.

I like steam deck because now I have a nice console/handheld (besides my overkill pc) thats literally timeless. Ill never have to worry about online servers going down. not until the apocalypse atleast lmao. its always nice to have handhelds like a 2ds xl (i repaired mine recently and never touched it since lol) or ps vitas. but a steam deck will always, always win at the end of the day. the one thing the steam deck could benefit from, is a smaller form factor. if they released a steam deck thats like slightly bigger than a ps vita while also being as lightweight as one, that would be the day steam officially won the handheld market over permanently

I wouldn't say the Switch created a handheld revolution any more than the Game Boy (and a little more recently, NDS and PSP) did. Switch itself is a customized Nvidia Shield, and before Switch there was a flood of high-spec Android and PC gaming handhelds that were usually poor quality and very expensive. For the the latter, Steam Deck was the revolution, and other companies are now releasing affordable handhelds that can handle more than emulating consoles up to 5th gen

just going to say nintendo won the console wars. a they have their own games, b they are always the one who inovate the gaming industry. n64 brought 3d, GameCube was portable(ish),Wii brought the motion controls, and now we got the switch bringing in all these handhelds. im a pc gamer but i respect the company that brought us so much in the field of gaming and quite a few heavy hitting games. also not saying they are the best quality just that they have given us a lot more than other companies in the same field.

I jumped on the steam deck as soon as it released because I was already thinking of getting the GPD Win, then new handhelds started releasing every six months. If you're jumping in now, I'd get the OLED straight up, you're getting more than just a new screen, the motherboard is different and battery is better, unless you want windows then get the legion Go, windows sucks on the deck because the controller needs setting up as well and the frame rate isn't great when I use it.
