I bought a year and can confidently say that this is well worth it for intermediate users who need speaking practice but aren’t confident with talking to real people or who don’t have time to hire a tutor. I’ve come so far thanks to it. Def worth the $200ish I paid

WHOA. This is crazy! I am just discovering this today and I am very tempted to purchase a 1-year plan. Thank you for showing how you can initiate a role-play situation. When I was planning my trip to Quebec, I would have conversations with myself like I was checking into my hotel, ordering a coffee, going to a restaurant, etc but I had no idea if I was doing it right. This is exactly what I need to progress! I am learning French at a B2 level. And although I am also Canadian, I have no french-speaking friends nor do I even know a single person who speaks french! I live on the west coast so French is no where near as common as on the East side of the country. I need this in my life!!
@josh.mountain
@josh.mountain 4 месяца назад
As someone who is also from the west coast, I can understand the lack of French-speakers to practice with. The roleplay helps me out because it allows me to try out different scenarios for the same situation (Ex. I can practice different conversations in a coffee shop depending on what I want to order, how friendly I want to be vs. formal, etc.) I find that the personalized conversations helps me to pick up an ear for the language I am practicing. For example, when I went to Italy after using the tool, even though I wouldn't understand everything someone would say to me, I had an ear for the specific words, body language, etc. in order to effectively respond (albeit simply) which made communication much easier :)

Its a great idea, and they can charge the price they can because no other app is doing this, but I feel like the price is too easy for competition to come in and take the market. This seems to be easily creatable as a chatgpt wrapper and ui, essentially you just take the mic input, convert it to text, send the text to chatgpt, chatgpt sends the response and then you play it back using text to speech
@josh.mountain
@josh.mountain 6 месяцев назад
I initially thought the same thing too, which makes me curious as to why we haven't seen more competitors yet. Perhaps in the coming months?

@@josh.mountain oh weird I thought I sent my response but I don't think it went through, I basically said I was doing research right after the comment and found that there's actually quite a bit of competitors. One of them is free too (capped to 10 minute convos).

@AndrewDaniele87

@josh.mountain the one I've been using for hours now has been Gliglish, I noticed it kind of takes over your speech sometimes almost like it's guiding the conversation (like nothing you said remotely sounds like what was on the prompt), but not so much so that I'd avoid using it. Have a look and see what you think, I'm giving it a trial now and if I find myself improving my speaking (literally just spent the last 2 years doing input only, so LingQ and then movies and tv shows once I learned enough from there, but no speaking) I'd definitely pay a year sub for it

Hi Josh! I just found your videos. I love these Teacher AI videos. I am also Canadian, but now I live in Taiwan, so I need to learn Mandarin Chinese. I am close to being an absolute beginner. Do you think this software would be useful for me?
@josh.mountain
@josh.mountain 6 месяцев назад
I would say that for this, it depends on how you want to use it. I knew no Italian and was able to start learning because I could coach the AI on how I want to be taught, it might be a bit challenging if you want to become completely fluent at this stage. The team behind it has mentioned they are going to be doing a free trial in the future, so I would recommend waiting until then since it is a bit expensive at the moment. 🙂

I'm also learning Chinese (I'm American) I'm at an intermediate level. I would say go through a program like Duolingo first for Chinese (like I did) and this would give you enough of a foundation with which to work with. Increase your vocabulary to about 2000 words and this would be enough to start being able to have conversations.

Just bought it yesterday. It’s incredible for folks at an intermediate level who sort of know what they dont know, where to find basics on verbs etc but need to practice and refine their skills. I used it a few times already… ive been stuck on phrases, asked questions or clarification and boom it was there…. I always struggled sticking with traditional courses bc i honestly didnt have time to watch dozens of videos and stuff…

I'm wondering if the quickening of the speaker is due to a programmed delay in the response? It seems like the delay before the speaker responds to you might be a half second or more delayed... allowing the response to be played and sound faster. Thoughts?
@josh.mountain
@josh.mountain 6 месяцев назад
I think it’s the time for GPT3/4 to process and come up with a response. Although they do have speaker speed adjustments. But I think they had that in the previous one as well, more of an OpenAI issue. 🙂

Yes, that function is on the ‘wish list,’ so it is in the pipeline. Their current vision for that is to have it be conversation-like, so it’s continuous back and forth until the user clicks ‘cancel.’ They prioritize fixing bugs, creating more value, and developing something called ‘tokenization’ to add Japanese.

I think this is a great tool to start learning a language. However, I still think to become fluent you have to have real conversations with real people. Otherwise, you are just memorizing words and phrases. Human languages are subject to human emotion and logic. Individual speakers use different words, expressions, gestures, etc. I like this tool but it doesn't get me to the level of spoken fluency that I need for work but I would still use this tool if I could afford it. It is useful.

Your final request of the AI showed how raw this is, the Italian tutor told you to say "C I vediamo, etc" when it should have said "ci vediamo, etc" in other words, it spelt the letters C and I in English instead of using the pronoun for "we" which is "ci"... I cannot see why it did that, other than this app is really not ready to be charging money at all, and should be beta tested more thoroughly before asking people to pay to be beta testers!

I guess it's all about perspective. It's adressed to non beginners so it assumes the consumer is already invested and would do regular sessions. If you'd assume one would do at least 2 a week that would mean 4.12$ per session if you only book a single month. It's compared to a human tutor so obviously it's not gonna be able to give you the same results thou but in comparisson to any other language app it is far advanced and will help you boost your language way faster imo. So for that I think it's fair to be charged, but I also would argue the price is a bit high for single month. What I would thou critique stromgly is the LACK OF ANY FREE TRIAL! I'd say that's just standard for language apps, cause you canmt know before you try wether it is the right suit your learning style and level

Many languages do not offer a lot of resources to get you to feel ready to pay for classes with a real tutor and travelling to a place where it is spoken is financially also not always possible and / or would gice you the best results after already being able to hold a basic conversation. I don't think it will replace the need to actually talk to a real person. I wish it had Afrikaans cause usually I watch a lot of shows / movies in my goal language but there are hardly any in that labguage. Therefore it would be so helpful to be able to practice daily with an AI cause I wouldn't be able to pay individual classes EVERY DAY
