Sewing is such a life skill!! As a woman of 55 I wish I had paid more attention and dedicated myself to learning when my momma and grandmother we're teaching me. Oh I can see a button and crochet a scarf, but to actually make something useful is beyond me!! Keep at it and learn as much as you can now!!

We used to use a forced air wood burner, but it would keep the house at least in the 80's in the winter in Indiana! We had it tied into the existing ducting and had a furnace/ac combo unit, but the wood burner could be cut off from the main supply by closing a flap! The house was a manufactured home that we had placed on a full basement and we kept the wood burner at the back while the furnace was located in the middle of the basement, the ducting was connected through the main supply! But they are always fun to clean, we did have a brick chimney installed for ours at the back of the house with clay liners and a clean out, which made ours a little easier to deal with, but we still had a vent from the chimney to the burner which had to be cleaned, but it was easily removed for cleaning and was a section only a few feet long! We have since moved further south, to Alabama, winter is was easier here, though the Alabama clay is just a mess to deal with! My grandma used to use her wood ash for her sidewalks in the winter, she had done this since the 1930's! thought I'd throw in one last thing, tip for peeling carrots, use the back of a butter knife and scrape the peel off, my grandmother taught me that, she always taught me about wasting as little as possible!

A neat trick to clean the stove door glass, take a damp cloth and sprinkle some of the wood ash from the stove on it. Wipe the glass with the ash paste. It gets the glass crystal clear, and it's free!

If you want a little change of pace, add some fresh fennel to the soup. Also, a little dill really helps lighten up chicken soup. We bought a chimney sweep, now we can clean our chimney. We've never cleaned it since we moved here but we don't use our wood stove very often. The previous owner put it upstairs. So when it's on the furnace doesn't kick on very much and our basement gets so cold. This summer I just discovered that the fan on the wall in the living room actually blows the warm air into the basement. So now we can use the wood stove and blow some of the heat into the basement. That only took 7 years to figure out. haha

@@LumnahAcres yeah, I'd almost have bought that. The breakfast bake with frozen broccoli - even taking the short cuts with the freezer hash browns and pre-shredded cheese - the fresh onion, celery and carrots - but then you open a can of corn? All that sodium and likely even some added sugar? If it's a GMO thing, you can easily freeze your own corn or there are a lot of farmers rejecting Monsanto's 'Round-up ready' or insecticidic varieties and growing heritage corns again. And if you grow and freeze your own, the cobs can be a near the last fattening up feed for your pigs - because you will likely have to cut the kernels off some cobs to make room for the incoming pork! And then you add homemade noodles?

It's delicious and all you would have to add really is some canned tomatoes, you can leave the hot stuff out and add the taco seasoning like @darangemaster1 said. Then when you serve it add some tortilla chips and a little cheese, white or cheddar. Might be something different to try Al or Gina! It's traditional down here to have tamales for Christmas, usually Christmas Eve. We're taking some to my daughter's since she's working and two of my grandkids will be there. Gina, your celery will keep probably 10 timers as long if when you get it,trim the ends then wrap it tightly in tin foil. It's amazing. When I first began my cooking career a chef I worked under would save all the vegetable trimmings(carrots, celery & onions)"mostly egg shells and trimmings from chickens (necks, wingtips& giblets)in a clean bucket. Then when he wanted stock (at least once a week)we'd pull the bucket out of the walkin and on the stove it would go to boil off. We would also do it for beef, fish, shrimp stocks.

Hey Al just some food for thought. By the looks of it you have a solid surface island countertop. I see that you put cooling racks down when you bake bread. I have also seen you put pots and or pans right out of the oven on the top. Please put a trivet down for your hot cook wear. chances are you will have no problems, but the tops have only so much expansion and contraction ability. You should also have a seam running lengthwise on the top, on your livingroom side. Do not put anything hot on the seam. It should be 30 inches from the front of the countertop. Build the stuff for a living, hope the info helps.

Our top project for 2019 is getting our third and biggest greenhouse moved to the homestead and set up. It is roughly 40 x 80 and climate controlled. Second is getting all the gardens covered with commercial ground cover and reinstall the drip systems. Third is finishing the conversion of the small greenhouse for rabbits and getting the rabbit tractors built

Good call in cleaning that chimney! One hotter fire in the morning and another one in the evening will keep that chimney cleaner. Seasoned wood and a couple hotter fires keep that chimney clean. Clean door glass is another good indicator if you have a clean/hot enough fire.

I loved that part. Soon me and my grandaughter will be doing more intense projects like you both are up too. Awesomeness

Make you daughter a stiletto for sewing. It keeps fingers safe and helps hold the fabrics together and guide them into the needle ( after you have had to pull all the pins out to keep from breaking your needle or worse, damaging your machine's timing), over those last few stitches that are so important to get just right.

You can use a layer of cut up flour tortillas instead of the hashbrown crust too. Just be sure to spray the pan first. And assemble it the night before, so it has time to soak into the tortillas!

Save the carrot, onions, and celery, ends and peals to use for stock prep. Next time you make stock, when the bones are almost browned enough, throw in your ends and peelings and brown. Then add the water to get all the flavor out and cook until done, then strain. There's a reason veg peelers have 2 blades on the cutting edge, hold your carrots before you remove the ends, upright and run your peeler up and down the stem then cut off the ends and save in the freezer, or dry for stock making. Works way faster than peeling one peal at a time. You can also give the cooked vegs to those goats, who do have both upper and lower teeth, just not in front. In Oregon you can rent goats to clean up your brush around the trees including Blackberry brambles.

Great job on your chimney. Not many people go to the trouble of cleaning till spring time. You’re preventing any risk before it could ever.start. I have an idea for you. I did this when I bought my house back in the 80,s and it’s probably the best improvement I did. I cut a hole through the wall right beside my wood stove and put in a half door with a box and shed roof on the outside. The box holds about a weeks worth of wood and it’s all outside. No more carrying in wood and making a mess. You could do it by taking out your window beside your stove and build a door that size and a box on the outside with a shed roof. You May miss the window but not as much as you’re going to like having all that wood outside just a step away from your stove. I don’t think I would have burned much wood if I hadn’t put in my box. Where my stove is I have very little storage room and to bring it from outside storage it’s about 40 feet away. This would make a great show project for RU-vid. I really appreciate you sharing your adventure with us.

I have been heating with wood for 40 years and since I quit using an in flue damper, I have reduced my creosote by at least half. You want as much hot exhaust moving up your chimney as possible. and my stove still burns very efficiently.
@adventure002006

Great idea sending chimney up the side of the house. So much safer cleaning from the ground than from height. 3 suggestions, 1: mask since creosote is cancerous. 2: duct tape for the two joints inside the house at stove and wall to guarantee no Carbon monoxide leak, 3: Carbon monoxide detector, since its the only way to detect if deadly Carbon Monoxide is building up in house.

Hi family! Look at Olivia sewing! She was holding it straight too! We don't have a homestead because we're in the city but this coming year I'm looking forward to finally having a small garden, even if I can only have a 4x8 bed. My daughter will be in her 2nd year of FFA and wants to raise a animal, she won't get to keep it so we're probably doing something small but she did say she would like to try raising a few meat birds in the back yard so who knows what will come. Overall, I'm just looking forward to watching my great nephews and niece grow up, watch my kid enjoy her HS years and prepare for the future and praying that we all have a great year. I can't see what the year brings for you guys. Stay blessed!

You can hardly ever go wrong involving kids with the responsibility of animals. They can and do help them in understanding life's miracles and heartbreaks. Thru their animals kids can learn the cycle and circle of life. From birth thru death, whether natural or for slaughter. FFA was great for me. I worked my way thru the officers positions and made lifelong friends. Both peers and farmers and ranchers all over our tri-state area. Tell your daughter a past chapter President sends her his best wishes, and this advice always lead with a big smile and your hand for a good shake.

@@LumnahAcres I don't know, we do live in San Antonio so our weather is quite warm most of the year. I would be hesitant to invest more than $100 or so because she is 14 after all lol. I'd hate to get something big set up and after the first run she decides she's out. I really think that our little garden and some crafting and around the house projects along with her school work and FFA will probably be all she can handle.

@@bigricky63 that's so awesome. The school she attends has a nationally recognized Ag Magnet program. You have to apply and the number is limited. There are high standards to remain in the program both with the school and here at home. It's really been amazing this year to watch her go from skating by at school to asking to go help in the barn after school. I love it. I was raised on a farm and her bio mom was raised on a ranch. I just keep encouraging her to explore every area that she's interested in, and she does want to go to competitions and be a officer. I will give her your message. She'll appreciate it.

kiml1508 I still credit my Greenhorn initiation as a first step to being comfortable speaking to and in front of a crowd. An old preacher told me one time that the key to being an interesting and popular public speaker has three rules. 1. Stand up. 2. Speak up. 3. Shut up. I wish your daughter all good things.
