Fun reaction - I adore this movie. It bugs me when people say it's "Stockholm Syndrome" bc that would be if Belle changed/lowered her standards and accepted him as the rude ragemonster, changing herself to fit him. No, in this movie, she held onto her standards, and he had to change to live up to them. That's the opposite.

I'm in the same boat as you! It was definitely not Stockholm Syndrome by any means. I highly recommend you watch Cinema Therapy's insight on this movie because they actually dive into the psychology of the movie and discuss how it doesn't relate to Stockholm Syndrome at all.

Beauty and the Beast: Beast releases Maurice with the promise that Belle stays with him. He has to save her life, learn some manners, and do nice things for her unprovoked before she starts to warm up to him. He also at one point lets her go with no prospect of her returning. Actual Stockholm Syndrome: Captor keeps his victim by force, and demands that he/she appeases the captor, and the captor rewards good behavior if he/she feels like it. TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS!!!

I think there’s a huge misconception about the rose. People think that when they say the rose blooms until the Beast’s 21st birthday, that it immediately wilts post that time. That isn’t the case. The rose STARTS to wilt upon the 21st birthday, meaning that it could be wilting for years before the last petal falls. So it’s very likely the Beast was older than 11 when he was cursed.
@domidium
@domidium 2 года назад
Except that Lumiere says in Be our Guest that "ten years we've been rusting..." And if the rose is supposed to bloom until his twenty first year, that would solidly put him at eleven when he was cursed. And, Lumiere also said "but the rose has already begun to wilt" as if it was a new thing.

I always interpreted it as his 21st year of being a beast. To answer your question, The prince was twenty one when he was cursed. He was then a beast for twenty one years. So technically he’s 41 to 42 for the story, but his human form was paused while he was cursed so essentially he’s only 21. As a side note, Lumier says that they haven’t entertained for ten years. And the beast thinks Maurice came to gawk at him. So who was it that came to the castle ten years prior, enjoyed a feast, gawked at the beast, and ran away? Considering Gaston led the townspeople right to the castle, I think it’s safe to say it was him.

@SummersMovingBookshelf
@SummersMovingBookshelf 2 года назад
To answer the “how old was he” thing, the stained-glass at the beginning clearly shows that the prince was at least 16 or so. If the rose blooms until his 21st year and starts to wilt then, that means it bloomed for 5 years, and to me, it makes sense that the wilting process would take just as long. 5 years of blooming+5 years of wilting=10 years. Another explanation is that Lumiere was exaggerating and that it’s only been 3-5 years. Since Lumiere has a flair for the dramatic, I wouldn’t doubt this at all.
@rebeccavaughn8897
@rebeccavaughn8897 2 года назад
He was 21 when he was cursed. The rose bloomed for 21 years, so he was a beast for 21 years, and his human self paused. When the curse was lifted, he was transformed back into his 21 year old self. Technically he’s 42 but essentially he’s just 21.

In regards to the discrepancy between the picture and Luminere's song, I was listening to a podcast with the director of the movie that explains it. Ashman, the lyrcist of the movie, wanted him to be a child when cursed because that's how it is in the classic french tale. The director wanted him to be a teenager, 16-18. Otherwise, it would make the enchantress seem cruel. Apparently they never came to an agreement. The aforementioned discrepancy was a result of this.

Belle also mentions far off places (Agrabah compared to France), daring sword fights (when the guards are chasing and fighting Aladdin), magic spells (the Genie turning Aladdin into a prince, and Jafars magic), and a prince in disguise (Aladdin pretending to be a prince). Belle also sings "Here's where she meets Prince Charming, but she won't discover the it's him 'til chapter 3." Jasmine meets Aladdin when she sneaks out of the palace, but doesn’t see him again until he’s a prince who wants to be with her. This is the most popular theory on her book I’ve found. The devolution of Gaston is interesting. While he's never a sympathetic character, in the first half he's little more than a stupid jerk, more funny than frightening, almost in the 'lovable goof' category. In the second act, obsessed with his rejection of Belle, he becomes more dangerous and frightening, and, especially, more an active agent, preparing to have Maurice put away, leading the anthem to hatred, 'Kill the Beast', and ultimately stabbing said Beast in the back in an act of bestiality and cowardice. As the Beast becomes more human, Gaston becomes more the beast (as, of course, the script tells us explicitly). I wonder how the actors for Gaston in the stage productions approach it. In the first act, they want Gaston to get laughs; in the second act, they want the audience to cheer at his demise (in the film, I think, Le Fou abandons this Gaston). This might not be easy, especially for less experienced actors, e.g., in high school productions.

He did. By telling her to piss off that winter night. My theory is that the enchantress was a fae creature, and they are notorious for cursing people at a drop of a hat. Remember Maleficent? Also a fae creature and she cursed a literal Baby to die at sixteen just because her parents didn't invite her to a party. Heck, in the original story she's even more petty, because the whole thing started because they had ran out of fancy place settings and they had the gall to give her one of the plain ones. With this in context, does it really surprise you that the 'enchantress' would curse a preteen and his entire staff, just because he was a little brat?

"Wait, so you don't mean to intrude but you wanna crash there for the night?!" Oh heck yeah! That was actually a thing back in the day - because horseback was basically the fastest mode of travel, you basically had to spend DAYS of traveling to get anywhere. If night fell and there wasn't an inn around you would have been SO fucked, so there was this wide-spread idea of hospitality; basically, you were supposed to let strangers crash in your house if they needed to. Sounds dangerous, and yeah, it totally was, but there were rules; the guest had to be gracious and try to make up for the intrusion by being helpful and/or providing the host with some kind of gift (if they could afford it) and the host was basically suppose to provide shelter and food, and neither was supposed to allow any harm to come to the other. It was necessary because otherwise travel was incredibly dangerous or outright impossible. And the necessity of it is why the concept of hospitality is so viciously protected in folklore - there are a lot of old gods who would FUCK YOU UP if you broke the rules of hospitality. A lot of fairy tales include that stuff too, like how Faeries can't hurt you in their homes or whatever - it's hospitality. It's why vampires can't enter your home uninvited - because someone who takes advantage of your hospitality (by, say, biting you in your sleep) is LITERALLY a leech-monster. Also that's why the Beast gets cursed in the first place; he was able to offer hospitality to the old lady and she provided him a gift in return as expected (and clearly couldn't afford anything more) and he was just a jerk and rejected her, which basically doomed her to die in the cold. That's literally what the enchantress is punishing him for - failing to adhere to the rules of hospitality.

The Beast (Prince Adam) was the first Disney prince who had negative traits; before, the princes were kind and heroic. After him, there were several Disney Princes who were selfish and/or arrogant (John Smith, Naveen, and Flynn Rider), though we did still have kind ones (Aladdin, Shang).

Haha, you're damn right about the ending.))) Me and literally every girl I know, regardless of whether they watched it as an adult or as a child, have always been unanimous in the opinion that he looked much cooler like the Beast than that "handsome" at the end: D What can I say? Little girls are not at all afraid of xenophilia, if there is some great personality behind, isn't this your lesson, Disney, why would you spoil it like that? XD Perhaps that is why George Lucas' animated film "Strange Magic", which is pretty cursed in some moments, has become such a kind guilty pleasure. This is a kind of "Beauty and the Beast 2.0", without the Stockholm syndrome and unnecessary transformations. It's not a real good movie. It has TOO MUCH popular songs, a little odd design and some other flaws ... But it also has good chemistry and creativity, it's really fun to watch, maybe you should try it sometime.
@alexiacaceda1421
@alexiacaceda1421 2 года назад
mmm.Why is everyone mad because he is not handsome?He is a normal looking french man and that's ok.The whole point of the movie is about not being superficial and him being an average european prince from the 1700's just feels right.About the Stockholm syndrome,it's not really the case in this movie
@sungunner6244
@sungunner6244 2 года назад
@@alexiacaceda1421 no-no, I don't tell he's not handsome. It's not the case. He's well drawn, just as every other Disney prince. But it's just the fact, that literally everyone I know, of every age, prefers design of Beast after all) Maybe if he would be more Beast-like human, not so classic, it would even work better. And yes, I see metaphor, and storytelling rules, like changes inside-->changes outside, etc. I just personally think, it could be little deeper by other way? And yes, of course it's story about changing man, someone really learning and becoming better person...But it still has some disturbing role models, cuz in real life this scenario most times looks much more ugly. And there's no need to deny it. I'm not agitate cancel every little unsettling plot or censor art any possible way, nope. But I'm also not gonna stop mocking for moments like that:)

@@sungunner6244 I get your point and I think this is definitely not a strong point of this movie.Even tho there's a lot of people who are a willing to change and grow for Their significant other, the majority of times it's a very different story. The beast still looks the same now as he did when he transformed in the beginning of the story. His photo that Belle almost looked at was the same look. Some say he was 11 but I don’t believe that because in the photo he was already a man. My guess is he was between 16-18 & now he’s 26-28 if it really has been 10 years. Even the Years could have been exaggerated during “Be our Guest” but who really knows?!

In regards to the discrepancy between rhe picture and Luminere's song, I was listening to a podcast with the director of the movie that explains it.

Makes sense since it is a fairy tale after all, one that has many different versions. Punishing a spoiled 10 year old on the one hand explains why the beast is in arrested development. On the other hand, it also weakens the message of learning a lesson lol since it really was just a spoiled rich kid, which would be 100% expected for a prince. I prefer that version, but now I wonder if that was supposed to be bad luck in the first place or just an example of telling kids they need to be perfect or else.

You might consider unrealistic how superficial everybody in that village was, admiring Gaston despite him being an absolute jerk... but remember, this was literally a backwater village.
