But or Rent - The Book of Life - • The Book of Life
In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) have been friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths -- Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter -- one thing remains the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle's outcome.

If I can combine the original Wonka and songs with the rest of this version, I’ll agree. Depp was good, but his portrayal of Wonka wasn’t my preferred version.

The reason Mike Teevee was updated is because Mike Teevee was not a cowboy lover in the book. In the book, he is a TV lover, same as in the book. In fact, Roald Dahl hated the 1971 version so much, he wanted no reboots in his lifetime. When Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was produced, Felicity Dahl, wanted this to be as true to the book as possible.

I've noticed he's the character who gets updated the most. It always matches what media is popular when the latest version comes out. Book - Gangsters 1st Movie - Cowboys 2nd Movie /Musical - Video Games (and the latter also shows he has even more unsettling acts that aren't helping, like smoking. A tiny little detail for the musical is they name his game after one of the gangster's weapons in the book)

Some curious trivia: First, all the oompaloompas look the same because they are indeed one single actor. The actor did the scenes several times in diferent places and with different coreographies. In an interview he said it was the hardest role of his carrer and he won't do that again. Second, the first time Willy crashes with the glass door was an accident, so Jonny Depp did it a second time to make it like it wasn't an accident. Both crashes weren't in the script. Third and last, the part of Willy's father having newspaper cuts from all of his son's archivements is based on a real life event of Tim Burton. He and his mother didn't have a great relation since she didn't aprove of him becoming a movie director, so they spent years without speaking. One day Tim Burton gets the call that his mother is in the last stretch of her life, so he goes to visit her, and he was surprised to see posters of all the movies he directed in her room. Actually, all the plot of the relation of Willy and his father is based on Tim Burton and his mother's relation.

As usual, I want to point out that this is not a remake of the 1971 movie. It's a completely independent, and honestly much more faithful, adaptation of the book the 1971 movie was also based on (minus the dentist daddy issue bit). People criticize Johnny Depp for his portrayal of Wonka, without realizing that it's a much more accurate portrayal of the character from the book, and that Gene Wilder's depiction is completely unfaithful to the character, to the point the original author absolutely hated the depiction of the character and forbad any further adaptation off any of his works, due to how much Gene's portrayal bastardized the character, which he called "sappy, sentimental and sachrinine". Personally, I enjoy both adaptations for different reasons, I'd just wish that people would realize their mistake and wouldn't unfairly judge this movie for their own ignorance.

Gonna go off on a whim, but out of the two Chocolate Factory films, I far preferred this one, in nearly every way: - More book accurate - Better, more complete ending - More interesting characterisation, especially the rotten kids (the original characters were really basic and flat) - Mr Bucket exists (and this raises the stakes when he loses his job) - Better grandparents (other 3 in the original might as well not have been in the movie) - Buckets actually feel like a tight-knit family - Great, high production value, making use of the 2005 tech - Uniquely stylised, feels more like a whimsical world - Excellent cinematography (compared to the dull execution of the first movie) - Cool, grungy atmosphere - Superb, outstanding sets - Varied and catchy music (not the same copy-paste template) - Wonka’s backstory - Dahl hated the original movie (even said it was too sappy and saccharine) - Crazy attention to detail (like Wonka’s pale skin and awkwardness from not going outside, the linguistically accurate Wonka bars, Augustus’s bars even have German writing, Violet’s panic chewing, Charlie savouring his food and wrappers etc.) - Was clearly a passion project instead of a commercial pretending to be a movie - Poetic in some areas (Charlie and Wonka parallels, Mike calling the Oompa Loompas “little freaks”, camera focused on Augustus when Wonka said not to get overexcited, followed by him dropping and stepping on his chocolate, Violet’s mother’s karma when she mocked Augustus fitting through the pipe etc.) - Better at showing instead of telling, like flashbacks and small facial expressions and cues

What happened to Charlie's dad? So, apparently, in the original movie, Charlie's dad is dead. They wanted to make Willy Wonka a bit of a father figure for Charlie. But, the director for this movie didn't think Willy Wonka would be a very good dad. At least, that's how I understand it. Hopefully that helps.

That's fair, The Wilder version is considered a classic in its own right and I hope no one judges people for liking it at all From my experience people mention it's accuracy to the book more so to explain how in that aspect, the Depp version does what a Book tie-in movie should be doing more than the Wilder version did, not that it necessarily makes either film film bad or good purely because of that alone

This movie trumps the "original" in nearly every way. The only reason the first movie is popular is because of nostalgia and it being considered a cLaSsiC (that doesn't even make it better anyway). That also shields that movie from criticism despite its several glaring flaws. It's baffling considering that movie was a disposable, corporate commercial that failed to promote a chocolate bar, and was was poorly received for its time, but it gets favoured over a clear passion project that actually had effort put into it because everyone mistakes it for the source material (the book which was disrespected by Wilder's movie)

This movie is weird to me because it feels like despite the title Willy Wonka is the main character throughout much of it, which is oddly something I heard Roald Dahl disliked about the original as he felt too much focus was on Wonka. This movie is typically seen as more faithful to the source material but the whole storyline with Willy Wonka’s father doesn’t exist in the books which makes sense as I personally didn’t really enjoy hearing about his daddy issues.

I hate this version. I've read the books (Chocolate Factory and Great Glass Elevator) and am so tired of people saying this one is more accurate, when it's just not (even if Dahl's estate approved it, which I honestly don't get). There is SO much added material here that has nothing to do with the book -- Wonka's awful backstory, and especially the writing for Wonka (compounded by Depp's terrible acting choices). For me, this is one of Depp's rare misfires -- his Wonka has nothing to do with the Willy of the books. There is no joy, no charm, no mischief, he hates people, children, families, etc., and he doesn't even like candy! I do think Charlie and Grandpa Joe are wonderfully cast, and I loved that Mr. Bucket was in the story as in the book. But honestly, it's not enough. I hated this movie and still think the Wilder version is pretty much perfect (even with the Fizzy Lifting Drinks) -- Gene Wilder had the sparkle and wit that Depp's awful Wonka completely lacks.

Tell you didn't read the book without telling me you didn't read the book. The backstory is the only thing not in the book but that's it, that not "SO much added material" like you claim. Wonka was never joyful, clearly let the other kids and parents suffer (in both movies). Doesn't like candy? You're just making stuff up at this point. And you consider the Wilder movie perfect despite ranting about the other movie not being accurate to the book and flat out disrespecting it in many areas?
