It’s so nice to see a reactor who gets the humor with Willie and doesn’t get all weirded out and offended. She’s comic relief and romantic interest combined. I think it was an interesting idea. It helps that it was just for one film.

Agreed.. Spielberg knows you have to up the challenge for a hero in a sequel. Therefore rather than having another two-fisted Woman as his sidekick again they gave him a spoiled Diva to have to deal with... And also a child to protect as well ...albeit a very capable kid who drives cars and knows kung fu... this made Indiana Jones's job more challenging in this film than in the first one- but in a different way... ultimately these are fantasy adventure movies but Spielberg found ways to create a lot of twists and turns where we follow the character Indy on these action adventures and create different characters for him and the audience to interact with

Great reaction. At 11:38 I'm not sure that you noticed that Indy says "goodbye Lao Che" and when he closes the airplane door it says "Lao Che airlines" thus falling into the villain's trap. Although, to be fair, it's an odd plot point to think you wouln't have just stopped Indy right then and there.

True, and such an expensive way to kill somebody - plane and poultry sacrifice - and make it seem "accidental" when minutes before he had guys trying to gun him down in public ... weird plot choice and gets weirder the more you think about it. Wouldn't be an Indy movie without one, really.
@ivaneames4354
@ivaneames4354 10 месяцев назад
@@Joshu_YI'm not sure he was necessarily trying to make it look like an accident. He just wanted Indy dead at that point. As the owner of the air freight company he was probably rich enough that he could probably afford to lose one plane and its cargo. The fact that he could do all that in public suggests to me that he has some good connections which will allow him to avoid getting into trouble.

That's Chinese Mafia for you. Also, to share a bit of Chinese culture, until some decades ago, male sons were quite a must in families, if you had none or worse, only daughters, almost certainly you'd have been socially humiliated. Lao Che having two sons appears to have given him quite a lot of social prestige, and losing one surely was a great dishonour for him.

Late to the game here... but THANK YOU! Thank you for NOT hating Willie Scott! She's comedic relief, and they wanted an "Indy Girl" very different from Marion (who's still in Nepal in 1935). Part of what I think you're experiencing during the opening is intense nostalgia. The song means a lot to you and is integral to who you are and what you love. This is a perfect analogy for people like me who wore out the Indiana Jones VHS as a child. Watching reactors such as yourself experience what was integral in my childhood brings out those same feelings. I went and saw the new sequel with my aging parents last week. Just being there with them and hearing the theme song made me tear up.

Wonderful reaction. And I have a bit of a unique view of all this, as I saw this movie opening night at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood - and then saw Patti LuPone headline in Anything Goes on Broadway in the late 80's (although I was familiar with the song from before). The opening number was definitely a call back to Busby Berkeley, as has been mentioned. He produced so many musicals, with 42nd Street being so influential in the 30's. And even the whole Indy series (and Star Wars too, really) are callbacks to episodic adventure serials from the 30's-50's, freshened with the genius of Lucas and Spielberg. And this is where Spielberg met Kate Capshaw, which led to their marriage.

I'm glad you liked this. I honestly think this is one of the most underrated movies of all time. When people say, "They don't make movies like this anymore," it's literally true. Just a combination of film stock and physical sets creates this wondrous, transporting, organic experience. [As an aside, I find it weird that few people think it's possible to survive falling out of a plane on a raft. It's an unbroken camera shot, and it's clear that the raft inflating creates enough wind resistance to slow it down. Once it hits the ground, it's slowed down sufficiently.]

This movie had me from the very beginning for the same reasons it had you... when she sings "Anything Goes", you know that Spielberg means that literally and is gonna take us on a helluva ride. And I never understood the Willie hate so prevalent among viewers...as the opposite of Marion from the first film, she is hilarious in a Lucille Ball kind of way and ends up redeeming herself by the end. I love this movie, and was so happy years later to see Ke Huy Quan win his Oscar.

Out of all the reactions I've watched, I've noticed it's mostly the women who don't like Willie, and I've concluded that many women, especially younger ones, don't like seeing a woman be the comic relief in a film. IMO they've been conditioned that any time a woman isn't super-capable, strong, or in charge it's somehow insulting or demeaning to women, and they can't accept a character outside a certain mental box. It was super refreshing to see Miranda actually appreciate it as a character portrait.
@darnmarr

@@DeathsjesterKMNP 2BFair.... Not just women react this way to her... Willie horrified me as a possible love interest for Indy when I was a kid: Marion seemed much better suited for a life of adventure--( I didn't know what prequels were ) so I resented Willie like you might resent your divorced Dad's new younger, shallower, obviously gold-digging wife.

It's funny that Indy experiences so many supernatural events in this film, which takes place before Raiders. And yet in Raiders when Marcus tries to warn him about the power of the Ark, Indy scoffs at the idea that the Ark might have any actual power. He's literally seen a man get his heart ripped out and still live by this point! He shouldn't immediately dismiss the idea that the Ark might have special abilities. I know, they didn't know about ToD when they made Raiders, but still.

Im sure someone already mentioned this, but in case not, at around the 11:22 min mark in your video, the person guiding Indie to the plane is Dan Akroid and the 2x people standing in suits in the background are George Lucas and Stephen Speilburg. Also, look at some of the Chinese writing, you can see a depiction of C3PO and R2D2 if you look closely enough. Also, the Captain (Captain Blumburdt) at the palace is Mr Gradey from The Shining. Great content. Take care
@JoeThornhill

The funny thing that I recently realized (SPOILERS) is that this is the only one where Indy actually succeeded. No, the stone didn't end up in a museum, but there was never that discussion in this one and he did return it to it's rightful place and the people. Every other movie, the villains use it anyway, then it gets locked away, or worse (despite Last crusade being my favorite too) lost completely, maybe even crushed by the earth, the only benefit is that it didn't pass the seal, but that was nothing to do with Indy anyway, that was just the curse or the powers that be or something.

It's a spectacular way to introduce an audience to be prepared for...anything! (It delivers.) And that live theater feeling you get only from being at the live theater? It's very hard to explain to someone who hasn't been. Movies can only hint at it. Fun fact: When this movie came out, I remember reading interviews with Spielberg where he said he had a secret wish to direct a musical some day. (By the way, I'm a composer of musicals. 33:11 From what I remember from reading the book years ago, at this point, Indy believed that there was a snake in his stomach wiggling around, and it didn't feel comfortable to him until he surrendered to Kali... or something like that. Been like 38 years or so since I read it, though. 45:46 "Where were all the kids hanging out until this point?" Probably with Indy and the regiment on their way back to the village. Remember, it took a couple of days to get to Pankot Palace. Probably took a bit longer to return if they had to feed and take care of the wounded children. Gotta' think about the logistics of these things. If you haven't seen it yet, Ke Huy Quan who played Short Round (Indy's little sidekick in this film) also appears as Data in "The Goonies" (1985), and has more recently appeared in Di$ney's "Loki" as OB.

Temple of Doom is my introduction to the franchise, as a six-seven year old. It’s very very good. Fun fact: chronologically in the series Temple of Doom comes before Raiders.

13:20 the first flight I give people in my plane, partway through the flight after getting altitude is to idle back without telling them, then fly around for 10min without power, them oblivious the whole time. The plane flies 100% fine without the engine. I just can't regain altitude without the engine. then I tell them we've been flying without the engine for the last 10min, and they have no clue. it's the best way to show people how safe planes are when the engine fails, without scaring anyone.

It’s so nice to see you really loved this movie. It’s always been my personal favorite. I’m also glad to see you enjoyed the character of Willie. You totally understood it. So many people don’t like this movie because of her, but she is hilarious.

I haven't seen Dial of Destiny, so I don't know if he was brought back, but I think the way Short Round could be brought back is that he could be an archaeologist as well, inspired by Indiana, having a friendly rivalry with his mentor. As for Willie, I could envision her being shown to be an activist, using her fame to bring awareness to conservation causes.

Did they really? :D I was hoping someone did, cuz I always thought all the eyerolling and scoffing about that sequence was unjustified. Certainly an inflatable raft is not as good as a parachute, but I have no trouble believing that it could significantly increase the chances of surviving a fall, albeit not without injury. I'll have to go check MB ep out. Thanks!

They called it "Busted". Episode 35, "Escape Slide Parachute". They found that raft would slow a single person's descent enough to be not lethal, but it is inherently unstable, and would always flip upside down. It could function as a parachute but you couldn't rig that up while jumping from a disabled aircraft.

As always, I love your genuine reactions. A little info about the opening musical number: When Spielberg made this film he really wanted to one day direct a musical. Since he did not know if that would ever happen he had a musical number written for his opening credits. I still have not seen WEST SIDE STORY but I am thrilled that he finally got to add a musical to his portfolio.

It's great to see someone have so much fun with these movies. Never saw anyone cry at the opening before...but I enjoyed your story around why 😊. Raiders will always be my fave, but I enjoy Doom and Crusade quite a bit ... Equally. Agree with your take on just wanting good ol' entertaining movies, but it's quite clear that "they" just do not know how to make these any longer. Good thing we have films from the 30s through the 2000s to rewatch...forever.

Loving your reactions to these movies. You are spot on, these movies are just sooo wholesome and entertaining. Not sure if you’ll see this but I’ve got a movie reaction proposal for you...”Krull”. No musical numbers but given your love for middle-earth in Lord of the rings, 80’s movies, fantasy, adventure and epic music I truly believe you will enjoy Krull. It was the first ever movie I watched on VHS my dad rented from Blockbusters, the movie is great I still love it, but as an adult and father I do question what my dad was thinking as I was 8 and my brother 6 years old, especially when you see he movie front cover 😮 but hey it was the 80’s! 😃

13, the summer before starting high school. This was an event. As others have mentioned.... Indiana Jones Adventure is an enhanced motion vehicle dark ride attraction based on the Indiana Jones film series, located at Disneyland (Temple of the Forbidden Eye, 1995) and Tokyo DisneySea (Temple of the Crystal Skull, 2001). Guests accompany intrepid archaeologist Dr. Indiana Jones on a turbulent quest, aboard military troop transport vehicles, through a dangerous subterranean lost temple guarded by a supernatural power. Though the story is unique, througout the queue and ride, there are nods to the films. This is a gem of a ride that nearly 30 years after its smashing introduction, continues to thrill guests (including myself, as a Annual Pass, and now Magic Key, holder I've been on it countless times, including a few days ago).

I think you missed that while you were dancing. :) Your reaction was "Oh, when the music hits though." Followed by "I don't like that; they know something we don't." Except we do. It was written on the plane.

13:30 you're actually right. by shifting weight, you can control a plane. In light planes, just leaning forwards and backwards in your seat can be enough. I used to use that trick to mess with my flight students to test their use of the trim. I also have used in on long cross country flights to fly a plane hands-free with no autopilot. I would trim it out, the fly hands off by just using the rudders and shifting my weight.
