But or Rent - My Neighbor Totoro - • My Neighbor Totoro
IThis acclaimed animated tale by director Hayao Miyazaki follows schoolgirl Satsuke and her younger sister, Mei, as they settle into an old country house with their father and wait for their mother to recover from an illness in an area hospital. As the sisters explore their new home, they encounter and befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest, most notably the massive cuddly creature known as Totoro.

Hey so the mom was in the hospital recovering from tuberculosis. Back I the day they would send those patients to the country where the air is clear because city smog and pollution would make tuberculosis worse and deadly
@mevb
@mevb 26 дней назад
Hayao Miyazaki's mom had tuberculosis which why he and his family moved to the country side. The movie is based on those childhood experiences. Kanta is even based on Miyazaki himself when he was a kid, being interested in aeroplane models and drawing comic scribbles (like Kanta does in his school book). He made the main characters into two girls as it would break his heart if they were boys like him and his younger brother.

Fun fact: they premiered My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies as a double feature. Imagine watching the wholesomeness that is Totoro, then being smacked the grief of Grave of the Fireflies

My husband and I have a box set of the Studio Ghibli movies and paired them into double features, and we did exactly that, because I think the only way I could watch Grave of the Fireflies again is with a nice happy movie alongside it 😅

I heard it was the other way around & the studio mandated that Totoro came after Grave of the Fireflies Edit: I rechecked, Totoro was played first for a bit but they mandated it be played second cause people walked out of Grave of the Fireflies

Oh god! That movie is shattering!!! I watched it once and that’s all you need! It sticks with you. No lie, I cried for 2 hours afterwards. My bf has yet to see it and he keeps asking if we can watch it and I absolutely refuse! It’s a fantastic film, but just so crushing.

@ravenm6443

@@michaelminch5490 tbh, I can’t blame you. For me it just so happens to be playing on a classic movie channel which was celebrating Miyazaki’s birthday by showing his films with some commentary before the showing. This particular one was shown at like 12am and I caught it probably 20 minutes into the film. I had absolutely 0 context or knowledge of what the film was about but I knew it was a Ghibli film, since I had seen many and the animation style is a giveaway. I really wasn’t expecting what I saw. That being said, I actually do wish they’re show it in high school history classes with lots of context. We really don’t talk much about Japans part in the war or why they entered in the first place. We focus almost exclusively on Pearl Harbor and the events that happened in August (which I don’t think YT will allow me to elaborate). At least that’s what was taught in my school and that’s with acknowledging my school was pretty liberal on many things, even being in a very conservative state. Japan just feels glossed over compared to what we learn about Germany. And I find it fascinating since Japan was basically the only county to attack us on “our land” that there isn’t more information given. It was a big thing that happened but those two things are all that’s mentioned. My schools at least kinda discussed the internment of many. I know many schools leave that fact out.

Accirding to Internet, the mom has tuberculosis and that was inspired by the fact Miyazaki's own mother had it too. Also, Satsuki and Mei are respectively 10 and 4 years old

There are movies where you have to shut your brain off and just be a kid again, if you can. Not everyone can do that. As a kid you don't think about the difference between spirits, magic and stuff. It's just magical. This is one of those movies. As kids we saw these small hills in the forest and thought there must be treasure hidden, so we dug a little. Of course we didn't get far with what little strength we had and no tools. We later learned that those hills were man-made. they were grave hills that at one time had treasure in them. Archaeological treasure long dug up and put in museums. But it was fun trying to find treasure. They sent a telegram, because they needed to inform the family that the mother wasn't doing so well. With no telephone that was the best way to contact them. However, telegrams cost by length, so people kept them as short as possible. And if you think about it, people tend to assume the worst. You find a child's shoe in a pond, what would you think? That's why there scene was there. To get you emotionally involved.

I don't think Totoro is calling for the magic with the roar, rather, calling for the bus. Also, it seems like it's the way it communicates but probably because it's big so every word seems so loud, but maybe to those his size it would be like normal talking.

This movie is like childhood make believe from a nostalgic adult viewpoint. Because the main characters are kids, and we view it through their POV, the story ends up being so simplistic but beautiful and full of love.

The Crab Mei in Satsuki's letter is a reference to the japanese folk story "Saru Kani Gassen" (Monkey-Crab Battle) where a crab plants a persimmon seed and standing at the plantation, waiting for the seed to sprout, just like Mei does in the story. Since non-japanese kids wouldn't know the story, it was changed into a pun as Satsuki refer to her as being crabby for the seeds haven't sprouted yet. In the swedish dub, Satsuki writes that Mei looks like a little crab sitting there hunched over the plantation.

The pastery that the girls, the dad, Grannya and the movers had is called mochi. It's a rice ball with filling, traditionally red bean paste, sesame seed paste or macha paste (green tea) but there're other fillings like peanut butter and even fruits like strawberries and bananas. I recommend try them.

In the japanese original Satsuki think Mei is misprounouncing "tororo" meaning troll (though she interpreters Totoro's roars as "Totoro") which is why she ask "Y9u mean troll in your picture book". In the credit scene, you can see Mrs. Kusakabe reading the book Billygoat Gruff which have the picture of a Totoro sitting underneath a bridge as the troll does in the story, which could mean that Totoro is a kind of a troll.

@Icyangel10

I think Mei might be wearing bloomers not diapers. Fun fact Totoro's name comes from Mei mispronouncing "Torōru" which is the Japanese word for troll. Also someone mentioned this in the comments but I found some more info, this was a double feature with Grave of the Fireflies.(Which is based on a book heavily based on the author who the brother in the story is an author avatar) The studio mandating that this be played after Grave of the Fireflies cause people would walk out if Totoro was played first. So thanks to the mandates after seeing a movie that makes you cry you see a movie that's more comforting.

To me it's so weird to hear people say that where they live young kids could never walk to school. I live in Finland and if you live close enough to walk then 7-9 year olds walk to school and back all the time. I lived 4 km away which was a little too far to walk so I used my bike (except during winter. Then I took a bus.) I can't fully understand why that wouldn't be possible. Like what would happen to them, cause anything that comes to my mind just seems too unreal. Like, there's no way that would happen so much that kids can't walk to school
