I think you nailed it with Christian comedy not knowing where the edge is. It also translates to why the films about true stories are much better because the line or the edge is already drawn because it’s literally happened or at least a version has so all they need is to not f up the other parts and they can do that with a proper budget.

Great video. I’ve never liked Christian movies. At my Bible study one of the guys wanted to watch the blind and the rest of us were lukewarm on it at best and tried to avoid it. But then one week he’d bought it and ordered pizza so we had no choice but to watch it. I was shocked by how good it was! Great movie.

Thanks for making this video! I’m not a fan of PureFlix anymore tbh but it bugs me when people say all Christian movies are bad when there are some really well made ones so I appreciate you being fair! I thought The Blind was really well made! It wasn’t actually made by PureFlix though, it’s just one of many movies made by other companies that they stream on their platform. The Case For Christ was probably the last actual PureFlix movie I enjoyed. Kingdom Story (The Erwin Brothers) are absolutely killing it! I Can Only Imagine, I Still Believe, Jesus Revolution and now Unsung Hero? Very good!

Dude this video popped into my feed and I was super excited to watch it. I loved your comments at the end about Christians wanting to be "secular substitutes" and how that is a problem! I make Christian music and my Insta feed is filled with people who promote their music as the "Christian version of (insert secular artist's name)" and it gets really annoying. I absolutely have loved God's Not Dead ever since I saw it the first time but I haven't seen too many other Pure Flix movies. I will say that my favorite movie of all time is indeed a Christian movie and I would like to recommend it to whoever is reading this comment! Even with some cheesy moments, not perfect writing, and maybe some actors who weren't the best, my favorite movie is I'm Not Ashamed. It is one of the only movies that has ever made me cry and I still get emotional just thinking about it! I highly recommend it to anyone!!! And thanks again Jonathan for the video.

Brother White is a more comedic version of The Second Chance. If you’ve never seen it you might enjoy it. It’s decent. Not great but not bad.

Love your point towards the end of the video about substitution vs. just creating good art. It's something I've thought about for a while but haven't quite had the words to articulate and you nailed it on the head.

As a reader, some of my favorite books have been by authors I didn’t even know where Christ followers until i read the acknowledgements at the end. there’s just something nice about a story that’s told with genuine emotion and being able to link it to God without explicitly being told to.

okay i haven’t seen all of PureFlix’s stuff but i know one issue that the writers have is making the characters goofy caricatures. as someone who isn’t christian, these movies basically have nothing for me, they can even be insulting so they’re just not a fun time. i understand the content isn’t written for me, i just wish they wrote more well-written characters. maybe then i wouldn’t feel like i just paid someone to spit in my eyeball after watching them.

Saw Unsung Hero this weekend. It was actually pretty good. I think the more recent collabs with Lionsgate has proved successful. Most of these films have the higher quality cinematography and the acting is decent!

I subbed because of this video. I thought you did a good job of breaking down the issue with Christian Media. I always thought "Copy Cats" but felt it was slightly off for a description, Substitution is more like it. Like when vegans try to make a Meat burger but it's obviously veggie, the presuppositions of Christian media get automatically applied into an eye roll. It's one thing to copy a movie hoping to get some recognition, quite another to copy the idea AND try to swap out things and stuff artificially a "Christ" character. It's the same cringe I get when I hear Christians make statements like "If only Eminem was saved..." Like God needs a PR team, and he needs to market himself so he can fit in with today's youth. Then, after you got my thoughts brewing, I thought "what other things is this guy into?" I found a Link Tree, and prayed that there wasn't a "Spicy Content" link that apparently EVERYONE has in their link tree, and saw you had music. Your music is really original, I can find my mind autopilot into "I wonder what artist or genre I can place him into..." but came up short. Thank you for the music! I am babbling, but thanks for reading this far.

I don’t think EMT’s usually remove the body of the a patient who has died at the scene. A medical examiner or funeral director (for hospice patients) would be called to scene to remove the patient.

There’s a movie like Brother White called The Second Chance starring Michael W Smith. I’ve never seen Brother White but The Second Chance was one of my favourite movies as a young, Christian child. Partly because they swore in it. 😂

After accidentally (long story) going on my own Christian movies binge back in 2017, I wrote this on Facebook, and it rings true to what you were saying, so I will post it here in the comments, to get you that RU-vid exposure- "Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against Facing the Giants, Fireproof, Courageous or War Room. In fact, they have good, strong, powerful messages that force Christians to ask themselves, "Am I living out the Christian life like these Christians are?" But I plead to the Christian filmmakers, when it comes to Christian films, let's stay away from the special revelation. What I mean is that God has done so many great and wonderful things in history and real life, we shouldn't need to fictionalize him acting. If you must film special. revelation, give me a Bible story, give me a documentary on a theological truth or give me a testimonial biopic out of Christian history, like End of the Spear. Rather, I propose that Christian filmmakers reach towards using general revelation, like allegories, typologies and other stories that teach theological truths. I always love me some Pilgrim's Progress, Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings, and I will take that any day."

Would love your take on Unsung Hero. I genuinely thought it was a phenomenal movie. Again, a true story of Christians retold as opposed to a “substitution” knockoff. I think that’s the lane. God writes the best stories, why try to top the miracles he’s already doing?!

That's always been my gripe about Christian content. It's cheesy. There has to be a way to make quality Christ-centered media. Hopefully this video gets into the right viewers gaze and inspired some grade A films/shows

Power Couple sounds horrendous. The Blind and Jesus Revolution are good. In general look up the director and writers to sift through which content is better than average.

So keep in mind Pureflix is both a production company and a distributor. Historically their productions are lower budget and inferior. Their licensed distributing content is all over the map. Also one limitation placed on “Christian” media is that it equals family friendly. There’s not much made from a Christian perspective for adults.

I don't think Pureflix is really heading to a better place. The best Christian films are almost always ones based on true stories and it has been that way for a long time. The Blind is only the latest of good films in that category.

I miss the days when Christians made good art, like Dante and Tolkien and Lewis.

I'd say try out angel studios. I know how people feel about Mormons being involved but there are some great shows!
