Small correction, many of the anime on MAL that are "unrated" have indeed been rated by people, just not enough people to meet MAL's standards for representing a mean score.

Watched the whole thing, crazy how much weird Avant Garde and Takena's stuff is just on this list. I'm sure, as painful it was to watch most of these, an actual real list of what the average person would consider "anime" would be an even longer video and have taken you much longer to complete. 1:22:43 Beastars (an actually good anime) actually does this too. And there's a good reason. If a character is only gonna be a part of the show for a short time, it's quicker to make a 2D animation than to make an entire 3D model for a small portion of the show. I think it works in Beatstars because it's so stylized, you barely notice until you look closer

Something that wasn't brought up but is still kinda interesting is that Mars of Destruction was, like most Idea Factory anime, made to promote a visual novel made by them with the same name as it. The visual novel goes past that last fight shown in the ova and actually follows up on all that needless exposition while going into some batshit insane territory. It's still not good, mind you, but if you were ever curious about if all that stuff brought up in the ova ever went somewhere then I'd recommend looking up the visual novel and/or some videos that talk about it.

How do some of these (most of these to be honest) actually make it on to mal, meanwhile stuff like Scott Pilgrim does not!? Like who actually put these "anime" on the site? They have to be shitposting or sabotaging, like on purpose, right?

7:30 To be fair, that laughing scene in Final Fantasy 10 was intended. The Japanese version is the same-- unless people want to pretend that both voice actors somehow got the same line wrong in the same way despite showing that they can do a genuine sounding laugh in *_literally_* the same scene. If you "fixed" it with a real laugh it would make no sense. Not saying it was perfect, but people keep claiming it's an example of bad voice acting when even Connor disagrees with that; it only works that way out of context. You could say the direction is bad, I guess, but not bad voice acting.

As a fellow indie animator, Takena's stuff is pretty solid. It just BLOWS how their work is put in the same vein as every other big anime like FMA and HunterXHunter and have the misfortune to be dunked on solely because they're Japanese. It's clear they're just doing these short little skits for fun.

An important fact to note is that the Mars of Destruction anime is based off a PS2 visual novel (also produced by the same company). Most of (if not all of) Idea Factory’s OVA’s were made to advertise(?) their games, as they are primarily a video game publisher/developer. With this, the lack of context and plot makes more sense, as you need to play the accompanied game

7:30 You are wrong to point out FFX laughing scene as bad voice acting. That is an example of good voice acting. The full context is that Yuna was trying to cheer Tidus up by practicing laughing on purpose. Then because it was so bad and silly, they let out genuine laughter and it was a wholesome and sweet moment. It's my favorite scene in video games that always gives me a goofy grin.

Funny how MAL Considers these hundreds of indie avant garde animation as "Anime" just because it's made by some japanese dude but they won't include Scott pilgrim anime because it's made by an American studio even though most of the key animators were japanese, LoL............

It's crazy that MAL put what are essentially Japanese art exhibits and independent internet animations on their site over Scott Pilgrim. Takena's stuff in particular has the same appeal to me as a Newgrounds animation from 15-20 years ago. I can't really compare it to something like Garzey's Wing or Ex-Arm, let alone average anime.
