"Kariokor" is from the phrase "Carrier Corps". There's also another one in Dar es Salaam. That was the base of soldiers of the carrier corps brought in to fight against the German colonial forces. Many soldiers also came from west Africa especially Nigeria and there are graves there with some of them. There were also soldiers from Ghana, who the locals from central Kenya called "Makorogoshi" from the phrase "Gold Coast".
