You gave Thao a lot of respect. So respect for you. I liked watching that roll. Good pace and you two were able to think about the roll and situations you were being put in.
Love your channel my friend! To me it is a good representation of the BJJ culture. Fun, energetic, and refreshing... the world has enough elite muscle heads, you just show love and roll! Big props
your content gets better and better!! It def took A LOT of time to create this... you'll be at 100K subs in no time!! If you're ever in the Boston area, let me know!!
Great content Tyler! 50 yr old Brown belt here. My style is very similar to Thao, though he looks like he has really good balance too. For sure things would have gone differently if you attack the legs. I also have mega grip strength as an old guy (6ft 200 pounds) but lately I've been attacking legs more simply bc I'm old and I can haha this is one of my favorite channels and I didnt realize that I hadnt subscribed even though I look at this site weekly. Good luck and thanks for the awesome content! *BTW I'd love to see you attack legs more in the gi against lower belts like purple, not finishing the leg locks but just grabbing it so I can see how you do it since you'd probably do it at will.
i m a 3 stripes brown belt, and when i roll i m never obsessed by submit the other guy, even if BJJ does not have striking, in my mind i always roll thinking we can strike each other , try to have a very martial art mindset more than a competition mindset, i want to be lethal (at my level) in the position, i want to feel i m controlling my sparring partner and if i want i can kill him with ground and pound, and i try to train as much as i can the escapes to save my ass, expecially when i roll with white or blue belts i give them the mount, the 100 kilos, i give them my back to train my escapes, very very important considering that i m also an over 50 man i can find lot of young guns giving me hard times
It always amazes me how proficient guys can be at one specific sub, like your guillotine. I rolled with a guy that could armbar from almost anywhere it seemed like.
@@TylerSpangler I just read what I wrote, hopefully u didn’t take that as me thinkin you’re a one trick pony, lol. I watch you all the time, and I know that’s not the case. 🤙
Some people find a thing they love and just run with it. I rolled with a brown belt (I was a blue belt at the time) who similarly hit me with an armbar from absolutely everywhere. It's really cool to see someone specialize and find expertise in an area.
@@TylerSpangler Thats my problem with Kimuras currently. I see them in every position. Close guard? If I just sit up a little.. bam Kimura baby! I only get the sub 30% of the time. Sometimes I just get a sweep.. most of the time I just gas myself out lol
Just subscribed to you, brother you get these taps with these guilotines that are usually low percentage, hpw have you managed to perfect it from so many awkward positions, any videos you have explaining the little critiques
You deserve your black belt. There are just different levels of black belt. And with your open mind to get better, you will. Every loss will build up to more and more wins.
I love seeing the other warm ups from other gyms. I personally am not the best grappler but I really try to give it all in warm ups. Interesting they were doing sprawls and wind sprints. My former instructor would have us do that for punishment.
I enjoy this video sound like you enjoy no gi more then gi you have amazing guillotine and very good sweep from bottom that old black belt samurai you face have strong grip he can control you and make it hard to pull any sub great roll hope to see more video Oss
Honestly, seems like that professor Thoa you rolled with, was barely trying. Obviously there’s a size discrepancy. But my gosh just look at how chill and relax he is. Much respect for Tyler being willing to roll with a diverse set of belts and sizes of people.
An old coworker of mine did alot of kyokushin, he told me that the black belt was the beginning of his journey. Maybe its a good way to look at it. Up untill you earned it you were following somone else his path, now follow your own!
Our gym has an unwritten "no oil change" rule in that because we have a lot of mma fighters, if you change someone's oil...you might get elbowed in the face. I'd rather just be fishhooked. You're also right about not knowing how hard to roll with an instructor at his own gym. It's a bad look to sub him in front of his own students, so I just defend and release subs (knowing in my head that I had it). However, and I've confirmed this with other high belt gym travelers, everytime I go to an open mat or visit another gym...the instructor puts me with 3 or 4 of his best students, then wants to do the last roll with me when he's fresh. (this is my wife's youtube acct, too lazy to change). One time I visited a very Brazilian gym and one guy actually whispered "watch your back, you have a target on it"...and this was during the pre class line up.
Great video my question is? Why don’t you ask what you are allowed to use. That my first questions on rolling. I been asked to leave once when I heel hooked a blue belt. It was in the gi and wrong but should have asked.
Just go and have a good time. I think there is a stigma with visiting other gyms, but most gyms are just happy to have new people. I’ll admit that they may give me more praise since I’m a black belt, but even when I was a lower belt they were happy to have me. Just be willing to work! Edit: I also think it goes a long way to offer to pay the drop in fee, even if they say it’s free. I like to do this just so they can see that I’m willing to be like other members
I am a blue belt and travel and drop in all the time. I recommend calling or messaging them asking if they have a price or if you can. Most places will have you just come on In. If not drop in fee I buy a shirt or maybe a rash guard
I was just talking to a new blue belt about feeling like you don’t deserve the belt you have and how much worse that must be for black belts. The skill ceiling for black belts is so damn high, must get hard to feel deserving of that belt.
Does any gym allows heel hooks in the gi? It seems like there would be way too much friction to ever get out. Great video as always Tyler! You're the man! Definitely a black belt👊💪🦵
@@TylerSpangler For sure a good thing. Does your gym allow heel hooks in the gi? We allow straight ankle locks in the gi but not heel hooks. In no gi all submissions are fair game. You're welcome boss man! Keep grinding!!
@Wrulol At IBJJF blacks belts aren't even allowed to do heel hooks in the gi. Claf/bicep slicers are legal, same with straight ankle locks and knee bars. It has to do with the amount of friction at place in the gi.
So, I was thinking, before this video, how would Tyler approach it when he goes to a gym and catches someone, and how that person would feel if they found the video. Well.. This is interesting
@@MNAcupuncture Heyyyyy. You did great! I wasn’t trying to spark anything, just that you’ll have to make content too! As for the sub, chatting and laughing together then doing a triangle isn’t really fair game lol. I really enjoyed rolling with you! I hope you didn’t take my comment out of context. Will gladly roll with you in the future. I made sure to play it slow and feel out, so hopefully you don’t actually think that was an ambush. Great work!
You made me think of an interesting idea. I'd love to hear your opinion. What if. Belts were limited and you had to steal them highlander style. One black belt per dojo. You get tapped you take off your belt and go back to brown. Purple belt taps you? He's a black belt for a minute till you get it back.
Like Ben was a purple belt for that kimura for a minute. Lol. You'd never feel like someone was going easy and letting you work and people would go home studying the defense to whatever they got caught with like crazy. Maybe just once a month.
Summary of the video series we have here: If Tyler punks everyone at a gym he gets to wear the blackbelt until the next video. If he does not embarrass everyone at a gym his belt is confiscated by himself until the next video.
You never going be the best, there's always someone that's better than you and you'll always be better than someone else, you just prove this to me. More evidence same with me and other blue belts I dominate some, some dominate me. You're black belt bro
well you have a killer guillotine choke i give you that, in my mind you are a legit black belt, you are not Andre Galvao or Marcelo Garcia of course..the chinese instructor you rolled with at the end has few stripes on his belt, he is older than you, but maybe he has 10 years more of practise on you, keep rocking hard bro!
Go hard back or stop rolling with them or respectfully tell them here rolling to hard it's just sparring don't feel bad for being uncomfortable rolling with someone
