FYI No one in North America wants food from China after all the Bird Flu Swine Flu and Covid Epidemic. Instead we just sell them Soybeans and Pork for Top Dollar Prices. Sorry Yuan does not cut it.....only USD. They have lots of droughts and floods ala Natural Disasters and most of China is sparsely developed so not much of Bread Basket with so many mouths to feed.
Its a shame western motor companies don't offer a base model like the Lada Niva Legend. Not everyone wants electronic everything on their cars or can afford all the electronic garbage.
Back to basics everybody...that’s what matters most. Basic Reliable Sturdy Affordable Stuff compared to Technically Complex Confusing Delicate Expensive new cars.
I love LADA NIVA LEGEND that car like a Porsche 911 for about 50 years they keep original design. The new LADA NIVA TRAVEL came out that is interesting car too.
Having grown up in East Germany, I used to repair LADA's (or Shiguli / Zhiguli as they were known back then). These were considered to be top-of -the line cars when and where I grew up and getting them fixed after accidents or because of wear and tear was difficult to arrange, so I was able to make a lot of money on the side fixing them. The NIVA just came out at that time and only higher party-officials could afford to drive them. It's nice to see they still exist in the same way they did back then with exactly the same basic interior (Legend). Brings back memories. NIVA's are extremely potent off-road vehicles by the way - there are very few places earth these cars cannot traverse. Very cool vid. Thanks Russell!
Hi Russel, i live in the UK and imported one of last classic Niva's into the country before the sanctions, its noisy inside compared to modern counterparts but the fun factor is incomparable to anything else you can buy, i use it as my daily drive ok its low powered with its normally aspirated engine of a 1970's Fiat origin but does have Bosch fuel injection with its Pirelli tyres and is surprisingly sprightly with its low weight and will cruise at the UK motorway legal limit of 70 miles per hour with the comforting singing of the transfer gear box to accompany you, of course its off road when all its tarmac road limitations disappear it then turns into an unstoppable little mountain goat and the sight of it terrifies the Land Rover brigade . I splashed out a bit more on my model and got heated seats and air conditioning and fitted a decent sound system, servicing wise its so simple to work on you can do everything yourself but being lazy i take to my local garage who love working on it! after two years and nearly 30 k in kilometres it hasn't missed beat (touch wood!) and in England at least if i park it near a fancy expensive sports car people will look at the Lada.
my father has a Field, he sawed off the transfer case levers to reduce noise and closed them with foam plugs. As a result, the noise level has significantly decreased, and if it is necessary to use a transfer case, the shift levers are attached. By the way, we have cheap plastic doors, trunk lid and hood on sale in Russia, this also significantly reduces the weight.I hope the translator translated everything correctly, because I write in Russian.
It is really legendary or at least should be because it is first crossover in world's history. Don't forget to give props to soviet engineering because it was produced and made totally by soviet engineers and soviet machinery.
Except its build quality is peace of garbage. It just breakes. Every time. Everything. Everyday. Suspension is trash, front axles - i've broke them driving through tiny potholes, rebuild engine every 100k - check, bad start/no start - every cold or hot day. Had one, my neighbour has two of them. Better buy used, 20 y.o. Opel Frontera, Mitsubishi Pajero or something else if you really want to go offroad. Just dont buy it if you want to save some money on shitty spare parts, time replacing them and freaking nerves - i lost a lot of sanity while driving this old junk of cheap rusty metal.
Living in Canada I had a Lada Niva 4x4 Cossack. Bought it new in 1995. Dam I miss it. It was the ABSOLUTE BEST 4x4 I have ever owned. I can only wish someday they will return… hopefully 🙏
Hard to believe Lada once sold cars here in Canada in the late seventies and early eighties. All the makes here now are so expensive because they are loaded with so many useless features.
I am in the UK and there is a make of car that is taking Europe by storm. Dacia . They sell cars that have only what you need and want. I have the top spec Dacia Jogger , Its a Self Charging Hybrid 7 seater Auto . It has everything i need. Like wireless android Auto. Auto Wipers, Auto Lights, front rear and Front sensors plus rear Camera , heated seats etc. This seven seater cost be £23,000. If you go for the normal petrol version its around £19.000. Base model around £17000.
LADA NIVA is still one of the most popular Russian cars in the world. I found interesting information on the Internet about the export of this machine to other countries: "For more than three decades, Niva cars have been exported to more than 100 countries around the world. Annually, about 15 thousand Niva cars were exported to Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern and Western Europe, including Germany, France, Italy, England, Spain, the Benelux countries and Greece. In addition, Lada Niva can be found in Australia, Iceland and Canada".
The attitude is not with your country or even the people, but with the leader of your country and the desistion and actions enabled by him and his political partners. Me personally I'd love to see Russia to be an open and welcoming country, I know the people are.
These LADA's are very nice. I can't believe the prices. Very inexpensive if you consider our prices here in the U.S. Husband and I drive very old trucks.
It was way cheaper prior to Covid. During Covid and SMO all cars became 1.5-2 times higher price. Largely because of high import taxes taxes to keep Lada sustainable, especially in a time of sanctions, when they had to spend a year to find replacement for all the foreign suppliers.
@@baristov Thats why she said compared to there prices in the US ...... and those are new cars....some used ladas wich are modern are very affordable even for locals
@@baristov For example, if you take the prices of new cars here in Turkey and compare them with local salaries, then the prices in Russia are still quite humane. It should also be mentioned that real wages in Russia, In contrast to Germany, have increased in recent years...
@@dirkvonriegen5267 Oh really? How exactly did you find that out that real wages have increased? Did they increased by the same amount car price increased in last 1.5 years?
What many people from North America and, may be, Australia do not realize, is that a car in Russia (as well, as other post-Soviet countries) is NOT an essential tool and part of everyday life. You do not need it to get by in your life in Russia due to very different city design and extensive public transportation network.

What a throwback down memorylane, these simple yet solid machines were very popular where I come from, but they rusted just by looking at them the wrong way 😂. Thanks for the vid Russell, I will always watch these car/trucks videos for sure!
Hi Russel, thank you very much for the interesting video from the Lada car showroom. My parents car Lada type 2101, it served well for 20 years, we had it in green, maybe we were lucky, but it was completely faultless 😍
I love that old lada! a few years ago there was an old lada that somehow ended up in the boondocks of the Philippines where im from. the locals loved the car for its simplicity and durability, even with parts hard to come by that thing just ran, the owner told me it was eating up around 1.5-2l of oil monthly for the last decade ever since he got it and he never bothered to have it fix because it didn't get worse. to me that is a testament of Russian workmanship.
LADA NIVA is nice, clean design and simple. Price is very good also. Wow a cafe in a car dealership. Prices of new vehicles are outrageous here in the United States, the dealer markups are crazy. Love the video, thanks for showing the auto dealerships in your country.
The markup of dealers in our country is very terrible; a car that costs 4,500,000 million rubles ($46,854) in its homeland will cost from 8,000,000 million rubles ($82,902) in our country. Despite the fact that the average salary of Russian people is 30,000~ rubles in the regions ($310), and in Moscow around 70,000 rubles ($725).
I have also wanted a Lada since I saw them in Russia, the Tank looked interesting also. Keep it simple so normal people can fix them (no EPA electronics mandated hell configurations)
BTW very proud of your continuous knowledge improvement about cars, test drives of these cars with or without commentary would be great (I don't know how many people would like this, it's just my own suggestion)
Much appreciated! I did get a chance to drive the Moskvich 3e when i went to the factory, but that was only around the building a few times. I am glad you like the videos.
If anyone curious, the reason why all the cars in production in Russia are white (or black in occasion) nowadays is pretty much the same it was in Ford Motor Company 100 years ago -- optimization. After sanctions, it hard to import paint and clean the equipment for different paints. Even back in the days "non-basic" colors required additional payments and are quite rare. White VAZ Niva aka Lada Niva Legend was the first car I was driven back in the days when I was 14 years old when my passed away father-in-law teaches me to drive. I got my driver's license many years after at my 30s, and the first car I owned was the white LADA Vesta with automatic transmission. It was a really good car for it's price, with decent interior, good look and very agile on the road, very good suspension for its class, good brakes, easy to maintain. Not a perfomance of cource, but 106 HP engine was decent to drive. I travelled all the west Russia in it, also in Georgia and really have been looking forward to import it in Germany before the Russian car import was banned. Dispute LADA always considered as cheap cars for lower class, they have it own charm, reliability and easy to fix, and 1st gen Vesta is a really good car. I will miss it.
I'd compar it closer to the old Suzuki Jimny or old fiat panda 4x4. All 3 amazing small 4x4s. The other two had to change to meet safety regs. Same as the defender you mentioned. I did like the old 90" defender with two facing bench seats in the back.
Professor, one fender bender resulting in any damage will cost money, and time. Lucky is the person who knows how to diagnose problems, and fix the issue. Since many new VW’s rely on computer diagnostics and the Blessed Parts! Yes, LADA! Famous brand, I’m familiar with since 1983! Thank you so very much! God Bless You! Nurse Jane
Thanks Russell, an excellent & professional introduction to this world famous car brand - hard to believe you don't have your own car at the moment. The pricing of the Lada, as well as the accessories, seems to be adjusted according to the buyers' financial ability to pay.
Hello Russell, once again a very interesting video from you and would like to see more videos from other retailers and brands.👍 I trained as a car mechanic at an authorized Lada workshop in the 80s, so I know him very well the Lada models of the time. Robust technology that could be repaired quite easily using on-board tools. The workmanship was reasonable, the big problem was just rust back then. With a little care, especially when it came to rust, the Lada Niva in particular was almost impossible to break and, with a little skill, easy to repair. I particularly liked the Lada-Niva Travel in your video, but please in a different color and different rims. Why were there only white cars there?🤷♂
It's now that period of time for Lada which Henry Ford described as "u can buy a car of any colour if it'd be black" (and white with Lada these days;))
The suppliers of paint left Russian market and replacement is still in development. There is silver metallic available for Vesta, don't know about nivas
Hello Russell! I suggest you visit the metro line №12 in Butovo on the south of Moscow if you have not been here before. The stations themselves are completely uninteresting in terms of design, but the line section from “Ulitsa Skobelevskaya” to “Buninskaya Alleya” runs along an overpass above the ground, right above a large beautiful park with lakes. I live nearby, it’s always nice to look out the train window. Now it’s golden autumn here! The largest lake is located south of the last metro station, the sunset there is wonderful.
Great suggestion! There is a lot more to Moscow than "stuff". It is absolutely PACKED with natural beauty. I know there are lots of "Garden Ring" videos out there - but the number and the sheer beauty of the Moscow parks is stunning. Can't wait for the holidays! No one does Christmas/New Year's like Moscow! And I HAVE been to many other European cities during the holidays - though I DO think that Nuremburg has one of the best Christmas markets.
@@MClark-kf9wq , hello! I suggest visiting Yuzhnoye Butovo for two reasons: 1) there is a huge beautiful park here 2) this is the only place in Moscow where the metro (not the monorail) runs not underground, not on the ground, but above it (sit high, look far away :D) The drive is about 10 minutes. It's not that I insist on filming a video (why should I??), it's just very nice to walk here with your family. Russell posted videos from the parks, maybe he'd be interested in taking a walk.
I think Chinese brands occupy something like 60% of the cars market in Russia now.. it must be a big loss for the Japanese, Korean, European, and American brands which decided to leave the Russian cars market!!
Always loved the Nivas. Wish I could buy the classic style 4dr 4WD. Here in the USA new Nivas are not available. Occasional ancient ones from the 70s become available sometimes in the enthusiast car markets. I hope they continue with the iconic classic look kind of like the G wagons did. I love it. I also love the UAZ Buxanka.
I always adored the Lada Niva Legend, and wish we had dealerships here in the US. Perfect vehicle for me. Simple, with no useless electrical gadgets that I'd never use, easy to work on and the car doesn't say "look at me, I'm POSH." It's 4x4, has plenty of room for just me and my Shepsky, room for camping gear, and fishing or hunting gear. With a decent ground clearance, the designers were very smart. From the factory it has a lifted suspension. $10,852.50 is a very good price. It's one of those cars that will never stop making them because it's dependable, cost effective and very well loved. Only comparable US made vehicle that comes close to my mind to being a truly versatile and effective 4x4 factory made car was the AMC Eagle SX/4.
@@beastiedemon3830 My state in the Midwest US uses a lot of salt on the roads during the winter 😞. I would love to have an old 1996 Bronco XLT full-size and older, or the smaller Bronco 2 from the 80's also but the ones around me when available are either rusted beyond all hell or are insanely priced because they've never seen road salt and they're in pristine hardly driven low mileage condition. I don't like the new Broncos we have now... yuck!!!
Russel...great job as always..I have a request from my mom..can you show how the Russian mail service is? Don't ask me why but she is curious about it!
Which of Russian mail services do you mean? The state one, Russia Post? There are many other post companies in Russia alongside: CDEK, Boxberry, DPD and so on.
@@TravellingwithRussellConsidering the salary of Russian citizen, even if you live in Moscow, cars are very overpriced, especially lada "classic" models
This was actually cool to see, as I live in the USA, and a Lada is practically unheard of here aside from maybe in the internet. Something else that was really cool, is that pretty much all of the ones in this video have a manual transmission, which is actually kinda hard to find over here in the United States lately, because almost everything has automatic or CVT transmissions these days. I actually prefer a manual transmission myself, and do have one, but my car is pretty old, and and finding a new car with a manual transmission is getting increasingly more rare every year. Also, that function where you set the speed and let off the gas pedal is called cruise control. I'm not sure if other countries have other names for it or not, but here is the States it's called cruise control. The one that lets you set a following distance from the car in front of you so your car slows down and speeds up to match the speed of the car in front of you without operating the pedals is called adaptive cruise control. Anyway, I actually really like the simplicity of the Ladas in this video, and I wish I could get simple, easy to fix, inexpensive cars like this in America.
Great video Russell, it is good to see a positive view of Russia and I just love those FWD older style of car , I think in many years they will still look and run when the fancy ones may be forgotten
I am from Russia and I can answer about the white color of Lada cars - all models have this color as a base color and no advance payment is required for it. According to the corporate standard, all cars on display at the dealer must be the same color, so the choice of white is obvious! It cannot be said that everyone likes a white car, but AvtoVAZ is now also trying to save money, so it is trying to paint cars without a variety of colors. As Henry Ford once said about the Model Fort-T, "You can buy a car of any color, provided it is black")))
Great video again Russell! Maybe you could get to the Aurus dealership too|? That would be very interesting! It would be great if Russia did a 3rd car brand, sitting somewhere between the ultra expensive Aurus and the broad market of Lada.
I want to go there. I know 2 Aurus dealer locations as well. I briefly showed it at the beginning of my Mercedes dealer tour. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1JnLqtA-8oU.html
@@TravellingwithRussell Cool! It will be interesting to see what happens with Russian brands. And whether Russia will work closer with upcoming Asian/Chinese brands now European companies are seemingly far less involved. Its strange how such a huge country only had a fairly small number of car brands in recent times. Kamaz trucks would also be interesting, given their legendary performance in Paris-Dakkar rallies etc.

Hi Russell. Thank you for the video is very informative. Lada Niva is a simple car, and as far as I know, it is not positioned as something outstanding 😊. The same Lada Vesta is a head taller.
Good Afternoon Professor Russell, so nice to visit famous LADA! Thank you! I use VW Fitzgerald on Hudson Street in Annapolis, MD.The sales department has separate management from the Maintenance Department. The Open Hours for sales is about 0900 - 1700, and “Appointment” preferred.
If you ask me what Lada I want I'd give you one straight answer - Lada kalina/granta sport liftback. Maaaybe Vesta sport liftback but it is doubtful. I'd really be happy with (kinda) old kalina sport liftback. Because it is pretty modular, you can do almost anything with your car by aftermarket means. Do 600+ hp with parts and mods - whatever. Do stiffer sport suspention - just spare enough cash. Sooo if you have cash, you can turn your Lada into some fancy drive. Enough. Cya and thx.
Hey Russel The name of the device on the steering is called Cruise Control. I drive a Hyundai Elantra in South Africa and it's very useful for driving long distance. You set it and you can take your foot off the accelerator pedal (like auto pilot the car maintains the speed it's set at). It disconnects if you touch the brake even slightly.
Lada Niva is like an iPhone. It is so perfect and complete that only minor changes need to be done from year to year. This year maybe more rounded bumpers, next year maybe there will be a different cloth option for seats.
Hello, It's great to see that countries are trying to promote local manufacturing and stimulate their economy. Always nice to see local development even if it's on a smaller scale... Also time stamp 1:48 the guy coming out of the building looked like he had an automatic in his hand... LOL.. had to rewind a few times just to see that again...
That was a fascinating watch and those prices are insane compared to the US. I would definitely buy a Lada if it was in a dealership in 4x4 with a two tone upgraded interior 👍🏻
I personally love a white car, pity you didn't show more on the interior of the cars such as backseat leg room and the back boot storage areas. That feature you are referring to a speed controller or auto cruise. The more technically new advanced cars these days have Adaptive Speed Control which slows the car down automatically if the car in from of you is going slower than you but generally that will be found in Automatic and not manual cars. A question does the Lada come with an automatic gearbox as an option? Please show us all the Russian made brands as I find that extremely interesting
I recently bought a 2003 Jeep TJ. I also own a 2018 Chevy Colorado, a 2018 Dodge Ram 2500, and a 2012 Yota 4-Runner. I have coveted these Lada Nivas for years, and damnit, I want one. I hate the 2018s. Too much whiz-bang crap in them. My 2003 TJ is perfect. Simple analog car with no frills. The US manufacturers just don't get it. I don't want a $90,000 Ford Bronco. I want a $13,000 Lada Bronto! I want an $8,500 Lada Niva!
White Russians... In Canada, Lada was always seen as a joke. My brother had one in the 1970s for a short time. I have always wondered if they were as bad as they claim in the west, and have they improved with the decline of the USSR. I suspect they are very tinker friendly vehicles, where the owner can tinker with them, instead of having to take them to a dealership for everything as with western cars.
This is a very reliable off-road car: minimum comfort, but maximum reliability, this one will go anywhere. This is actually what it was created for. Yes, it is easy to repair it, no need to go to the dealers. Cheap consumables. It also easily can be upgraded: our men insert another motor into it, add some additional accessories to improve comfort inside the car. It is not bad, but simple for ordinary people.
There is no automatic transmission available in LADA Vesta NG model at the moment. However, I think an automatic transmission system (Chinese made) will be installed in LADA Vesta NG model early next year.
My dad owned 4 of the lada niva at different times back in the days. The last ones he had were made in 2002-2003 model. Very reliable cars but slow and uncomfortable.
Discovered your video by accident. So refreshing to see affordable vehicles, I’d consider buying a Tank - I live in US, so never happen. Cars sold here are choked with expensive tech we just don’t need. Simple is better.
Excellent to see a car with an actual bumper bar, manual mirrors, basic floor mats, and no AC or radio, but disappointed it has electric windows. What's wrong; can't people use a window winder? I always considered the Niva the ultimate survivalist utilitarian vehicle that can be repaired using simple workshop tools. The next thing you will be telling me is that the Niva now has power steering so when the pump or belt fails, it's an accident looking for a place to happen. Given the absurdity of the cost of modern western vehicles and their maintenance and spare parts, this could be the car of the future for a decimated western middle class. I didn't see any "market adjustment ($US5000)" or "compulsory extras ($US1500)" or "Nitrogen filled tires ($US500) on the out-the-door price of $US 8,500.
Cruise control, name your after. Had a Lada Niva Cossack back in 89. White with black stripes ,tilt sun roof & roo bars front & back. This 4x4 proudly sported the made in USSR on it. Fun to drive ,handled very well in snow & in 9 years it never once broke down. A car you could fix yourself ,unlike today. If I move to Russia ,I want another Niva, & I'd let you have a drive .Thanks for bringing back some good memories .
You call Moscow winters hard? Well, if you live in tropics, then maybe so for you. But I can open a secret to you: winters in Moscow are warmer than in Canada and northern states of the U.S.

When I was growing up you basically had two choices for a first car, a Lada or a used car. And whenever someone bought a Lada they would try and convince you that they'd made the best decision and offer to let you have a go in it, then you'd drive it around the block and try not to cringe too much. Uh yeah, gonna stick with my used VW or whatever. There were so many jokes. Why do Ladas have heated rear windows? To keep your hands warm while you're pushing it. What do you call a Lada on top of a hill? A miracle. What's the difference between a Lada and a Jehovah's witness? You can shut the door on a Jehovah's witness. A guy goes to a used car dealer and asks for a hubcap for his Lada, the dealer replies: "that sounds like a fair swap."
