While the MTH whistle sounds more accurate, as I’m sure they recorded the Big Boy’s whistle in person, I think that Lionel captures the power of it much better than MTH.
I just got the mth one myself can’t believe it has such weak chuff sounds for such a monster of an engine it should have more bass and be louder the Lionel one is much better sounding more detailed and runs smoother
Also the Lionel vision 4014 is more in tune with the actual locomotive, cause even though I did not get to see the real one in person, but I did get to hear it's whistle and I can tell right away the Lionel 4014 is the better locomotive and I also saw a RU-vid video of Big Boy 4014 clearing his throat and getting all the gunk out of the whistles and sounded exactly like the Lionel. If you get a chance to do so, get on RU-vid and look up big boy 4014 blowing whistles after some years of storage.
Great haul! The MTH Big Boy having the commencement speech is a great touch, but I gotta say I like the Lionel whistle better. It’s bigger, clearer, more powerful.
Both whistles are good, but the Lionel gave me chills up my spine. When I saw the Big Boy go through our town back in July of 2019, that's exactly how the whistle sounded.
Over the years, MTH's sound engineers have always been one to ten steps behind Lionel when it comes to train whistles and robust steam sounds. They didn't disappoint with the MTH restoration Big Boy, Lionel by a landslide.
First and foremost, the Lego crowd made me smile. Second, the whistle: the Lionel whistle had more depth and character, at least in my opinion. That’s a fantastic haul Chris, thanks for sharing.
The LEGO re-creation was genius. I love your videos and how they remind people of what is important in this hobby and that is that trains are awesome and super fun.
@@RBPTrains what brand of engine house do you have looking to buy one am building a lay 2 Christmas ago I received a car load of Lionel trains from my Sunday school teacher who was down sizing
As always, great video. You never fail to put a smile on my face, you are so positive (which is in short supply these days) no matter what you are talking about, great layout. Oh yea, hands down the Lionel Big Boy on every whistle contest you've had. Thank you for all the great videos.
Lionel's Big Boy whistle simply looks like Secretariat beating the others BY 31 lenghts in the 1973 Belmont Stakes. MTH is great, but this is Lionel by landslide.
Almost regretted my Lionel Restoration Big Boy acquisition until the the whistle off. I do really like the MTH announcements though! MTH did nail the 611 with the right colors for the tender and stripes!
The Lionel Restoration Model is fantastic! I have seen that one and it is impressive. Both Lionel and MTH have such unique elements to their models that make them interesting and fun to run. Thanks for watching!
Thanks as always, Chris, for a crisp, fun train showcase and run. You picked up an impressive collection locos to enjoy over the summer. I hope you'll find time to share the fun. As for the whistle challenge, I have mixed feelings. I like the MTH Big Boy sound for its crispness, but I also like the Legacy Big Boy for its deep tone. It's very close the N&W 644, a very haunting sound, indeed, so refrain from making choice. Thanks for sharing your prosperous day collecting at York!
Lionel 4014 by leaps and bounds. That is some motive power Hall impressive. I think you're slowly catching up to Eric's trains I think it's time you did a count like he did like an old-fashioned dual. Don't ever lose the facial expressions hysterical
Love your channel! I only do a Christmas layout in our living room each year and am an amateur who struggles with the wiring but I push through with the help of an old friend of mine who is my train “Yoda”. Love what you’re doing for the hobby and someday I hope to build a layout in my basement for my future grandkids. Keep it going my friend - you are an inspiration!
Thanks Neil! I am still figuring things out myself, haha! The tinkering is one of my favorite parts. Enjoy the layout build and thank you for watching!
@@voidthe3f859 That’s actually how I got started with trains! My 10 year old son at the time (16 years ago) was well over the while Santa thing but he was a good sport as he had his little 5 year old brother. He told me he didn’t believe anymore and we had just recently watched the Polar Express movie. I was telling a good friend of mine at work about my Santa dilemma and how I missed that innocence. Space my friend happened to be a train enthusiast and was quite a bit older than me and had trains when he was a little kid. Space he suggested that I get the new Lionell polar express set and set it up Christmas Eve so that when the boys came down I might get one last you know I have a reaction from my 10-year-old. Space I did exactly that about some parchment paper and a gold sharpie and I wrote a letter from Santa with the bell that comes with the set and have a set running Christmas morning and they woke up to that sound of the train running. Space one of the all-time greatest Christmas moments for my kids and I’m sure it’s something they will never forget. Space but, a monster was born as I just love the train and each year I started the tradition of adding new train sets accessories buildings etc. My oldest son is also a two-time cancer survivor and because of this we have a family tradition we’re both sides of the family come to my house on Christmas Day because when he was sick we couldn’t travel. Christmas with my nieces and nephews growing up watching my Christmas layout trains have been a magical part of our Christmas tradition. So now I’m a train guy for life but lacking the true train guy skills LOL
This faces off between Lionel and MTHs big boy has just became the battle of the model railroading century. As much as I love the Lionel big boy, the MTH has much more detail and is more shiny 🤩🚂
Winner....Lionel. I am just happy there is someone else that has WAY too many locos than anyone needs!!!!! Great additions. I'm going to the PO right now to pick up another loco.........One I wanted but didn't need!!!! Thanks
Very cool Chris, sorry I missed you at York. Had a great time, bought a few things though I can't match you. It seems you got some great buys. As always stay safe and most of all have fun
The Lego people was a good idea for the showing of the big boy lol! They both sounded ok ! Lionel had more kick n sounds. You’re going to be paying on your cc for awhile with these purchases lol ! Thanks for sharing, enjoyed watching!
Hello Chris Great video nice show at York Mr Muffin has a very nice train collection and the MPC era Lionel trains rock GOD BLESS STAY SAFE AND THANKS FOR SHARING ;-)
Your cracking me up Guy! Lol 😂. Congratulations on Your Classic Toy Trains Cover and Article feature on Your Layout . Very nice . Love your videos and work . York is definitely on my list of things to do for sure . Congratulations 🍾🎊🎉🎈 on all your recent acquisitions! Absolutely fabulous !
I got a few 1950s Lionels but these trains you have out do anything made back then ... You got some beauties with such great detail and sounds ,lights and smoke ..Newer is better in this
hey Chris awesome video. Love your haul from York, I'm jealous (lol). I liked both whistles but the Lionel just had more balls behind it to say, yes I am a big boy. Great job
Another great video. Have to admit I'm a little jealous that you have both restoration versions of the 4014. The Crayola car looks like silly fun and certainly unique. Thanks 👍
Lionel sent shivers up my spine, like the howl of a mysterious behemoth through the old southern pines at night. Great idea with the Legos recreating that historic moment. I should try that with my L-gauge Big Boy 4005.
The museum of transportation in St. Louis, Missouri has a big boy that you can climb up into the cab and sit where the engineer would sit. It is quite awesome.
From this recording the Lionel whistle "gets to you more" than the MTH. It sounds to me that the Lionel speakers have a higher fidelity. The presence of the revealing ceremony recording on the MTH is clever, commemorative and wonderful though. Hard to choose between them. If I had the money I'd have to have both.
Very cool finds Chris. I've been to York a few times when I lived in PA. They always put on a great show. Enjoy the new stuff to the collection have a great weekend
Fun video, Chris! You always do such a good job with your videos. Loved the use of the Lego figures. Being a diesel man, I really liked seeing that CSX lash-up too! Regarding the whistle challenge, I have to agree. I'd say the Lionel #4014 wins, but only by a hair. Great video! Bill B.
Fun video as always Chris! Let's take a few things seriatim. Whistle battle? As much as I admire MTH products I've got to give it to the Lionel 4014. Bolder, guttier, and more authoritative. The MTH whistle ain't bad, but the Lionel is better. LOVE that crowd scene! VERY clever! TWO vintage scale Hudsons with "Mighty Sound of Steam!" Great! And your's WORKS! I picked up a Lionel ACL Hudson earlier this year with "MSoS" but when I shot the power to it I got the "Mighty Sound of Agony!" It let out a blood-curdling scream! Hey, no biggie, I pulled the bad sound unit out and installed a Williams steam whistle and bell package. It's fine now. Congratulations! Great scores all around!
Nice Train set like and whistles sounds and smoke coming out love your Union Pacific Big Boy steam Engine Locomotive Train fun to watch good job love Trains
I was in Utah to see 4014 and 844. I was in the front row. Had an amazing time and met people from all over the world who came to see 4014. I like lionel's 4014 whistle the best. By the way, 4014 is actually using 3985's tender. UP just unannounced 3985 will be donated to a museum, never to run again. So sad...
Geez Chris, what a haul! I'd have been happy to walk out of the show with any one of those engines, let alone all of them! Color me Brunswick green with envy! Your Dad has a good eye- that East Penn RS-1 looks great. Liked your Lego crowd, and- not sure which whistle is prototypical, but I like the Lionel one better. Nice vid! 👍
No question! Lionel VL wins the whistle "sound" contest. I do like that the Restoration Series has whistle steam coming OUT the whistle though. That definitely is cooler than how the Lionel just has the whistle steam coming out a small hole. Great video!
Love that authentic MPC sound, haha. If you're looking for a train-based coloring book, a family favorite is Amazing Trains: A Coloring and Activity Book by Lindsay Turlan.
Awesome haul Chris! I like the Lionel Whistle better, however, I like the looks of MTH better. I have to tell you, you have a very special lady in your life like me, to make that kind of haul! 😆
Mr Muffin has an awesome collection of Lionel Milk Cars he has every one that Lionel has made very impressive they even have a Choo Choo cafe the food there is off the chains .
Awesome finds, lot's of great trains. I think the Vision line big boys whistle is better, though the Mth one is more accurate to the real 4014, the Vision lines whistle sounds more beastly and powerful. Great video
I think the speech was great with the LEGO figures. Nice improvise, man! If I ever build my own train table like you have, I might do similar adjustments on the set. As for your question, I’m not sure. I might have to choose the restoration Big Boy for the better model. Sorry Lionel, I will keep buying your trains if I can, but considering that this is the last model the designer created and produced, plus the authenticity form, it’s hard to beat that!
Those Lego peeps looked real to me, hilarious, thanks for the laughs Chris. Loved the Western Pacific too and vote for the Lionel whistle over the MTH.
Great video Chris! I hope to make the trek out to York in October and meet everyone! As for the whistle battle, I think the Lionel one sounds better. That speech from the MTH Restoration model is fantastic though!
It was definitely a great experience It was also kind of funny since the commuter line ran right next to where the ceremony was, one of the commuter train engineers played a joke with his horn right after Ed dickens said 4014 coming ahead
Chris, comparing my video of the Big Boy whistle sound as it arrived in Hearne, Texas, the MTH tone is more realistic, however, I agree that the Lionel sounds better. The oscillation of the MTH whistle is one of my issues in your video. Happy Trails Another great show !
Just missed you at Grybozki's and Trainworld. I was actually eyeballing the WP GS Northern. Glad it went to a good home. I ended up getting the B&O 2-6-6-2 and the WM 2-8-0 from Gryobozki. Funny thing is, it's a shorter drive for me to his store than it is to York. Nice haul though. Maybe I'll catch you in the fall.
Awesome video Chris. I did see you at the train show on that Saturday but we never met. Cool stuff you got there, including the 785, 783, and the Big Boy. I also have the MTH Railking East Penn Railroad RS1 57! I live close to the real thing!
MTH announcement sequence is killer, but no way you can beat that Lionel Vision Line whistle. You gotta stop buyin all my bucket list engines Chris! I'm never gonna catch up! 🤣 love this video
Hi Chris! Just a bit of info on your Lionel 785 Hudson. Did you know that this was the last Lionel Hudson cast using the original boiler casting? Check it out closely and you'll see the unclean casting details where the die was showing loss of details. My father used to have one of thos back in 1987 when they first came out. We loved the spoked drivers even though it meant giving up the magnetraction. For me personally, I wish they'd get rid of all traction tires on these heavy, scale and scale-sized models. I get tired of having to replace these traction tires (some replacements are very difficult). Besides, some of us like to see the wheels slip when pulling a heavy train, especially steam locomotives. The two-rail models don't bother with traction tires so why do we need them? These locomotives are so heavy, far heavier than anything made before 1990 and their shear weight allows them to pull a lot. I spoke with a jeweler once about afixing a permanent stainless steel band around each wheel that had a track for the rubber band. He said it could be done quite easily. Of course I know that you can just not replace the traction tires but there's something about it that bothers me. BTW, I like the Lionel Big Boy whistle way more than the MTH Big Boy whistle, it's deeper and sounds more massive.
That is some great History on the 785! I did notice that it looks just like the Pre War 763e that I have in the collection and now it all makes sense! I will take a closer look. The traction tire situation is certainly a challenge and I am always checking the stock to make sure I have spares. The metal band idea would be interesting to test. Thanks for watching and for this info Ralph!
@@RBPTrains I'm glad that my storehouse of useless info 😁 is actually appreciated by others. Seriously, you help me take trips down memory lane and that means a lot to me. I wish I lived closer to fellow train collectors!!
MTH sounds more like the whistle I love seeing all those trains you did a good layout right now I'm still building on mine I have the all the big boy trains I have around house the only thing is I'm trying to build it and trying to get the roundhouse set up because the turntable each time it gives out and I'm trying to build it where it actually works without having no man you'll do it myself and I have a another steam engine I'm working on but rebuilding it keep making those videos I love them I'm just trying to get all mine set up and running the proper way I have a full layout it's just I'm just trying to get the trains all up to speed it must be expensive hobby but you got to enjoy keep making good videos
The lionel whistle is more accurate. I have chased 4014 many times and actually rode behind it from Denver to cheyenne this summer. I love hearing that 4014 steam whistle.
Beautiful purchases Chris, I love all your engines but the MPC era stuff is a little hokey in the sound department but that was the hobby at that time so it's all good. The Big Boys are fantastic and I have to go with the Lionel whistle even though I am a big MTH fan but the whistle was just a little bit better with the Vision loco. Always look forward to all your videos so keep them coming.
I like the Lionel whistle better because I don't like how the MTH has a repeating sound. I still would love to have both of them. They are both great. You made some great purchases. Nice to meet you again at the show.
Your excitement and enjoyment for the hobby comes through in your videos. It’s been fun watching your videos evolve. Great job. And, my vote is for the Lionel Big Boy. They both sound great but the Lionel sounds a bit more clear and has more oomph behind it.
Thanks Vin! The Lionel model has a bit of an advantage as it has the 3 speaker system VS the tender speaker speaker system that is in the MTH model. Appreciate all your support!
