Hi Lee. My 2 daughters both had a year at American Universities. They both flew to San Francisco and took in all the sights including Alcatraz. Me and my late wife were going to take the Californian Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco. Had it all booked but she was diagnosed with bowel cancer and passed away 5 months later. I think my days of travelling are over as it would not be the same without her. So your posting these Vlogs are cheering me up. As they say keep posting!
Another cracking video. You’ve excelled yourself this trip. Totally brilliant. I wonder how many MacMasterhaters (hope I spelt that all right😂) have said you should have been detained in a cell?
This has to be hands down the best Mac master video yet, I've been fascinated with Alcatraz since watching Clint Eastwoods movie and seeing the tour was awesome, corny jokes aside and the pleasant lack of music made this extremely enjoyable, thanks Lee.
Another great video Lee! I went to San Francisco years ago on a tour. Unfortunately, I missed the detail about the Alcatraz tour. By the time we found out in order to go it was too late. Because, we wouldn’t make the bus back. Thanks for the great tour of Alcatraz!
What an amazing video The people of San Francisco must have quite a bit of dosh judging by the different types of boats in harbour. Also the place looks very clean. The tour of Alcatraz was amazing too so thanks Macmaster 😊
Went in 97 did the Alcatraz tour not as busy then, as we landed the wardens shouted at you asking why are you so happy going to jail, played a really great role. The motel we stayed in the night before had escape from Alcatraz on the tv which drowned out the noise from the room next door. Will be following your journey with interest as we drove down the coast road to San Diego and then went to Las Vegas and Yosemite National Park. Love the US great country.
Lee we paid about that and got a mega discount voucher to eat at Bourdin bakery just down the road past stinky seals at pier 39..Did you get a dirty hot dog when you got off the ferry….Controversial.i spoke to one of the guides who does a really interesting talk in the food hall about the great whites..he said there in there and they go in to pier 39 for the smorgasbord of seals..hilarious I ran from the bottom gift to the top gift shop to get a poster, nearly missing the ferry back, then on the pier there’s an Alcatraz shop.I’m glad I had the chance to go to where they’d filmed escape from Alcatraz..We walked across the golden gate which was spectacular but I found it a bit grim and no way as fantastic as the Sydney harbour bridge.
What a great video. You had The Blue Angels at the start. They're known to fly as close as 18 inches apart in their diamond formation, and the brilliant F22 Rapter at the end. All of that, plus a really interesting tour of Alcatraz.
Great vlog Lee. Bought back memories when I was there in 1984 as a 12 year old with my parents. Back then they had a guide showing us around and they locked us in a solitary confinement cell. It was pitch black and a little scary! Something I’ll never forget. Amazing place to visit!
Hi Lee, this has - for me at least - been one of the most interesting videos you've ever released! The fact that Bill is there regularly does nothing to diminish the significance of talking to the man and having him sign your copy of the book. I said that because visiting the place is hardly an everyday event for the majority of people and the signed book is definitely something to cherish forever. I'm so envious of your having been there. You lucky man. 👍
You picked an excellent time to visit SF during Fleet Week. On your return trip, that was an F-22 and a P-51 doing a “heritage flight”. Really enjoyed your tour descriptions. I did the Alcatraz tour in the early 1970s; there was no audio tour (or evening tours), only plaques and written displays with much less support infrastructure.
Lee, It was great to see you talk to someone from my province of Saskatchewan in Canada. 👍. I can only imagine the shock of someone leaving Alcatraz after 15 years and feeling afraid. Reminds me of the movie The Shawshank Redemption. Great vlog Lee.😊.
Hi Lee Visited San Francisco for the first time in October 1984 & did the Alcatraz tour then there was no Audio commentary but were guided round by a National Parks officer visited again 38 years later in 2022 with the wife & what struck me was the volume of tourists compared to 84 also they actually locked you in the punishment cell to get some idea of the darkness rather than walking in and out it also seemed in better condition than 1984 great video as usual looking forward to the next installment.
Interesting video, Lee. It certainly sells the idea of an Alcatraz tour for anyone in San Francisco. All those locations looked very familiar from "Escape from Alcatraz". (I have lost count of how many times I have watched that over the years.)
Hi Lee. We went there with the family just before covid struck. Brilliant tour and we met William Baker also. Our grandson got him to sign his book and couldn't stop reading it in the RV...
Great video, I did this 25 years ago and they had cassette tape guided tours, brought back good memories. Nice air show as well. More videos like this please👍
I was thinking about this all night, this is the best video you have done for ages (i watch them all, ever?), informative, nicely paced, well edited. Thank you
Thanks Lee. I'll never be able to get there, so you've made my day, nay year, showing us around Alcatraz. What a treat and meeting that ex inmate too. ☺️
Looks a great tour Lee really informative 😊 and to get the chance to meet an actual inmate wow defo cherish that book mate it's priceless 👍 if I have the luck to visit I'll be taking the audio tour thanks Lee 😊
Brilliant video Lee. A very interesting tour that makes it seem like you are really taking us along with you. About the right length too at 40 minutes long. Great work. Many thanks for your efforts in creating it.
I also have a signed book from a previous inmate. It is called "From Alcatraz to the White House". We visited there in 1992 and Nathan Glenn Williams was signing copies of his book. It was one of my late husband's treasured possessions - although his favourite memory of our trip was the wonderful doughnuts on the ferry to the rock.
Thanks Lee for this interesting video. it's great to see places where a lot of people like myself will never go too. looking forward to the next one. Mildred. xxx
Yeh I did Alcatraz in 1999 very good visit and we had the Blue Angels (kinda Red Arrows but better!) blasting around the island while we were on it. Glad you caught the F22 display with is trust vectoring, hence the moves it makes! Another good video, 😀
Good Evening Lee. I absolutely Loved your video. Your tour of " ALCATRAZ "!!!!!!, Wow!!!!! What an Incredible place to visit and do the Audio Tour and to feel how the Gentlemen that were Incarcerated at this Famous visitor Attraction. Really puts Every day things into Perspective does'nt it Lee. There has been many a Film made about this place. " Escape From Alcatraz " and i do believe( The Birdman of Alcatraz starring Mr. Burt Lancaster). If only the Walls and Cells could talk, what stories they could tell the people, of the World today. You are a Lucky Gentleman Lee, meeting an Actual Inmate who can tell his Life's story about " ALCATRAZ "!!!!!!. To also be given a Signed copy of William's Biography. Glad you Enjoyed your Special Trip over to the Island with " ALCATRAZ "!!!!!!. Onwards my Friend. Enjoy the rest of your San Francisco Adventure Lee. Jonathan/ England.
Loved this video. I have done the Alcatraz tour and I agree… the audio tour is definitely worth it! This was one of the best tours I’ve done. So worthwhile to experience. Great work, once again 😊
Fantastic video, really interesting and informative, totally get why you had the audio tour, we got the same thing at Peterhead prison & met the prison officer that was held hostage by the inmates and rescued by the SAS! I think I have a signed copy of his book somewhere. When I go to San Francisco I'm definitely going to book the tour! Nice one Lee!👍👏👏♥️🏴🇺🇸
Well that was a step back in time. Thanks for the tour Lee, it was brilliant. I went there as an 8 year old with my dad back in 1980 and remember being in awe of the place. If it was the School summer holidays, the chances are that you and I would have been in SFO at the same time 🤔 I was surprised how much of it I could actually remember, and nothing seems to have changed. It seemed weird that back in 1980, it would only have only been closed for 12 years. At the time, as it was so stark, it felt as though it had must have closed for a century or more, much in the same way as it appears today. My lasting memory from there was actually getting locked in one of those tiny cells in the isolation block by one the guides (no audio tours back then). Even as an 8 year old it felt a bit tight 🥵
I did this tour in 2018 about the same time of year. It’s the best touristy thing I’ve ever done. Totally gobsmacking. Still find it hard to believe that I’ve actually been there.
WOW!! Lee you have done it again. You are one of the best people telling of this and showing it all. I have not seen this good on the History Channel. IF you ever decided to get a “proper job” :) you should get one on the History Channel. Just show them your work and you would be hired.
Fantastic video mate, very informative and very interesting. I almost felt that I was there. I had shivers at times. The book sounds very interesting and I might try to track a copy down. I knew Al capone was in alcatraz but never knew who else. Cheers for the video.
Great video Lee…. I’ve visited twice and met one of the warders children who went to school there. Worth mentioning to anyone planning to visit is to book well in advance as there are only so many places available and it sells out fast. There is only one company permitted to sell the tour. Onwards
