Thank you to everyone who watched this video in the first month it was posted! As promised, I just made a $275 donation to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in Alex Trebek's memory. The link is in the video description if you would like to make a donation as well.
I am donating all of the Adsense revenue this video makes in its first month to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. The link is in the description if you would also like to donate in Alex Trebek’s memory. I saw some online discourse when the sale was happening debating the ethics of opening up his house to the public for this type of sale. However, there were six months between his death and this sale, so I imagine his family were able to choose what would be important to them, and with a house this expansive, a lot of things pile up that would be too much for one family to keep. While I’m not sure that having the entire house open to the public was the way to do this, I’m glad that his fans had the chance to give his possessions a second home and be able to truly appreciate where they came from. I tried to be as respectful as possible of the whole situation in this video, so please also be respectful in the comments.
I disabled ad block and let the ads play entirely for the good cause. Of course I muted the speakers and looked away, but the advertisers don't need to know that.
I also attended Alex Trebek's estate sale, twice. I enjoyed it so much!! In this video, you showed some of his jerseys. I was able to purchase the blue, NHL Toronto Maple Leafs jersey with the matching pants. I just came across your video, and was wondering if you'd be interested in hosting a raffle for it? I know that so many people all over the world, would've loved to attend.
I think you did conduct yourself really well in this somewhat weird situation, and I'm happy you got this scroll saw to use it, rather than letting it gather dust!
I hired an amazing estate company after my mother died. Their handling of it all took a tremendous weight off my shoulders. Some people let me know what they purchased and sent me pics of them using it or displaying. Since I couldn’t possibly use or keep all of my mother’s things, it made me feel good that someone else was enjoying it. My mother is in my heart and in my memories, not in her things, so please feel good about helping Alex Trebek’s family.
I remember watching a feature about Mr. Trebek actually purchasing the remaining stock of a local hardware store when they went out of business, including all the original storage bins and boxes, so that's why it was so well organized!
I could tell from some of the containers that were in the garage that they came out of a hardware store. The big box stores (Lowe's, Home Depot etc) are killing the local hardware stores.
This is the exact sort of thing I would want from a famous person's estate sale - something useful that I will use and then tell people "hey! I did that with a thing [celebrity] owned!!"
I’m glad that you went to the sale and told us about it. I would have gone, too (if I lived in LA!) But I agree with you that it was sort of sad. Very thoughtful of you to donate your Adsense earnings to pancreatic cancer research! Enjoy the scroll saw and let us know if it is easy or hard to make wooden puzzles. I have confidence that you can do it, Karen.
I am continually amazed by you! What a neat thing! I can totally see you becoming a scroll saw expert and cutting out your own puzzle one day. My dad, God rest his soul, had one of these things in retirement and would spend hours making all sorts of stuff (not a puzzle, alas), until encroaching blindness made it impossible. You go girl! Can't wait!
Oh, this made me cry so much, as it stirred up all the feelings about disposing of my mum's belongings last year. I'm delighted, though, that these items have ended up with you, someone who will use and appreciate them.
What a great video!!! Your videos don’t have to be just puzzles. You were able to have an experience of a lifetime. Thanks for taking us along. I’m glad you had enough money!!
So you got 3 items at Alex Trebek's estate sale? That's a Daily Triple! Thank you so much for sharing this unique experience! I agree, Alex would be happy that you're giving his scroll saw another generational use.
I only vaguely recognized his name as they don’t show ‘Jeopardy’ here, but this was a really charming bonus video. I recently rewatched your video about making missing jigsaw pieces so I look forward to seeing the next one one day.
I have been binge watching your channel for a few weeks and finally splurged on a Ravensburger puzzle and omg it was so much better than I was expecting! Never going back to those cheaper puzzle brands. THANK YOU for giving me a new obsession haha!
Karen this is a random subject. I really liked it. The respect you showed to Mr. Trebek cones thru in the video. I have been watching you from your crafting days here on RU-vid. I puzzle occasionally, usually dollar store. I do plan to add puzzles to my list for thrifting. I appreciate your videos about vintage puzzles. On a side note, my Mom loved jigsaw puzzles and you remind me of her. Thanks for sharing.
Omggg this video is awesome! I loved Alex Trebek and I was so bummed I could not go to the estate sale! I've always wondered what his garage would look like cuz I had seen an interview that he had it all organized and stocked! I'm so happy you were able to help me see in it 👏🏽 and I'm so glad you found something you already had your eye on! I'm sure, like you said, Alex would be so happy someone found his item a new home that had a purpose! Can't wait to see what you create! Also, the fact that you are donating the Adsense revenue is AWESOME! My grandma died of pancreatic cancer in '09 and so this is why Alex held another special spot in my heart! So glad you shared with us your adventure!
I think he'd be thrilled to know one of his beloved tools will continue to be loved and used. And who knows, maybe Alex worked on that puzzle with his kiddos or grand kiddos. I always figured he'd be the type to be an involved kinda dad/granddad.
I think it's great you went. I also think it's wonderful that the family didn't just keep his stuff around left to sit. They gave people the opportunity to take a piece of his life to cherish. What you took home is special. It had to be fun going thru his home too. I enjoyed this video a lot. Thanks.
Years ago, I saw an elderly lady cutting profiles of animals, on. Hegner scroll-saw, in France . So when I got home, I bought one. After much practice, I did cut animals. However, anything more advanced, was beyond me. So good luck with that saw. I'm sure that , because you are young and artistic, you will progress more than me. I have since , sold mine. You will need a good vacuum-cleaner 🙂.
I live in Alex's hometown and I loved watching him on Jeopardy. He's very missed and it is weird to me that his home was just open to the public. I'm glad you got to go though, I'm sure you were very respectful while there.
My father Inlaw passed from pancreatic cancer 5 years ago, it’s horrible that the time once diagnosed has not changed. It was so heartbreaking to see a loved one pass with little time and so painfully. I wouldnt wish this on anyone, thank you for donating to research. I pray that pan can ( its pancare for those in Australia) can help prevent and cure this horrible disease.
Thanks for sharing that special day. Glad you found something relevant to you and Alex. It is a special tribute to a special man. I've self assigned, Alex, as your word for this video.
Great story Karen! You said the puzzle was nothing special but you'll always smile when you look at it. And maybe Trebek did put it together before! Fun stuff, hope the saw opens up new adventures for Karen Puzzles.
Love Love Love this. I am from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada where he went to University. He was a strong supporter of the U of O and made frequent visits to the City. Enjoy the saw. Stay safe.
I could totally see the look on the Uber driver when he saw you and your saw. Hilarious! what a story he had to tell that night at dinner with his family! But you got it done!
What a really cool (and somewhat weird) experience! Also, I think it's great that you are donating your Adsense revenue from this video for an excellent cause. Have fun using Alex's saw...I'm sure he would have been pleased to know that it went to someone who appreciates it and will get some use out of it. Now...we all wait patiently for the video featuring the saw and your wooden puzzle pieces, lol!
Such a fun video. I can just see you hauling that saw out of the house and into an Uber. Looking forward to some cutting my own puzzle videos. It has to be really strange to think of people walking through your relatives home. But can you imagine trying to figure out what to do with all that stuff? Thats a huge house and it looked like he had a lot of memorabilia. So its nice knowing that people who cared about him were able to enjoy his things. Plus they get some $$ as well.
@@TassieLorenzo probably because there was so much stuff it was easier to just let people come in instead of packing it all up and moving it. One less step, and less money out of their pocket.
I am catching up on the videos. Been very busy. I loved this video. I grew up watching Jeopardy and Trebec. I am stoked that you got a puzzle from there and that scroll saw......very cool. It's a shame no one offered to help carry that for you.
I loved the story of the scroll saw and you’re right….I think Alex would be proud of your practical decision of what you chose to buy and how you plan to use it to continue learning something new! I feel like, no matter how brilliant Alex was, he always wanted to learn something new and encouraged others to do so!!! ❤🙏🏻
Thank you for sharing your adventure with us. I have always wanted a scroll saw so I'm very envious of yours! You can start your own wooden puzzle piece jewelry line!
This was a really cool story, Karen. Can’t wait to see how you use that saw. I was not much of a Jeopardy fan, but certainly was saddened knowing that we lost a cultural icon when Alex passed away. I think he would have gotten a big kick out of knowing where his scroll saw went.
Love a vlog! Thanks for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Estate sales are common and an excellent way to have material items reused so they don't end up in the garbage....i am glad you got to experience it.
Me not being American, I don’t know jeopardy and have literally never heard of that guy, but I’m just excited cause you seem to be really excited 😂 congrats on the saw 💪🏻
"It's really old and falling apart -- " Meanwhile, it's the exact same age as me. O_O Owning Alex Trebek's scroll saw is just the coolest thing ever. :-)
Alex will surely be missed. Thank you for sharing your experience! His home was very nice and honestly, even though the house was amazing, his furnishings and decorating made it feel like a home any of us would have. :)
You are such a pleasure and joy to watch! The way you filmed, edited, and took such care with Mr. Trebek's privacy is so special! I am sure that the is smiling and loving the fact that you bought that saw. It was meant to be yours! I also wanted to say: you inspire my son Adam (10) and me all the time. Not only with your puzzle skills but with how you speak, edit and create all your videos.
I went to OttawaU (The university that Alex Trebek went to) and he spoke at my graduation. I got to shake his hand as I walked the stage and he seemed so nice and such a calm presence. My whole family cried when they heard the news, we're all such big fans of the show.
Interesting video! I never knew they even had celebrity estate sales like this. Maybe you can make a video about using the saw to create the missing puzzle piece.
You may want to attempt to go to Betty White's estate sale - I know she was really into word games and brain puzzles, and I bet there would be some pretty cool stuff there!
Karen you conducted yourself very well in this video. This is super interesting to see how how he lived his life. When he was not working on the show. Amazing video. And his honor and memory will live on forever with all of us.
What a fun and amazing story! It’s awesome that something like that when it someone like you who will take good care of it and use it instead of just reselling it or something
3:45 Oh my god he has a Redblacks jersey! So glad he always remembered his university town. 😢 (Alex Trebek went to the University of Ottawa, in Canada, for people who don’t know. There’s a alumni hall named after him.)
As someone who has also bought a scroll saw for $80 when an old shop was being cleaned out, I hope you get lots of use out of yours! Lack of adequate space and ventilation means I haven't begun to learn how to use mine, but I know it's there for when I finally have a decent setup. I know there's some great youtube turotials to get started!
I think it's so weird that the public can just go and buy anything that was pretty much left exactly how the person had it when they were alive. That being said I think it's also great that this stuff can go to people who appreciate it and have use for it instead of ending up in a landfill.
That's the premise of an estate sale though... It's so much easier/cheaper for the family to not have to move everything into some sort of storage facility only to have to move back what doesn't sell before potentially donating it. I agree it feels a little invasive but thankfully I don't think the person who died cares anymore, whether they're in a better place and released from earthly worries like embarrassment or solely becoming a part of the ground again.
@@lazyhomebody1356 I knew Alex was a hockey fan. Not surprising since he was Canadian. It's the Blue Jackets specifically I was commenting about, since I'm a Blue Jackets fan. He grew up in Ontario and worked in California, so that was unexpected. The jersey has a logo they haven't used for 15 years, so presumably he had it for a while.
Beautiful, respectful video. He was such a kind man. A joy to see his home; thank you for sharing. The donations. Will look forward to a video on what you learned about cutting your own puzzles with his scrollsaw.. just wondering...did he have a manual to it?
Thank you for sharing this video, and for your donation to PanCAN. I can't wait to see you use the scroll saw, and it would be great if your first puzzle with it was either the jeopardy logo or a PanCAN purple puzzle :)
I know that had to be really odd to do, but it's great that you did it and gave a second life to something that was his. Also amazing that you are donating to his cause even in his passing.
When you said he died just a few months ago, I knew that wasn't right. November of 2020 wasn't just a few months ago. I did enjoy your video, though, and congratz on getting Alex's scroll saw.
You're the second vlogger I've seen who went to that sale. Blazed and Glazed was there too. The sadness of estate sales of people who have died is something I hear people mention regularly. It is a bit odd but I always think the message is that we can't take our stuff with us in the end and that ultimately material possessions don't have much meaning. I was curious what happened to the house and I looked it up. It was torn down in 2023.
I told a young friend of mine who, FYI, actually competed on Jeopardy and in the Tournament of Champions, that I felt like going to an estate sale was felt like desecrating a grave. She said that you should not look at it that way. She said you should see it as giving those things a new life with a person who will care for them.
