Nah, ear cleaning only hurts because the skin in the ear is thinner and more sensitive. As someone who regularly cleans his ears with sometimes rough methods (Wounded my ears several times) I believe the forces of this dude (Guy who's cleaning the ear) are actually comfortable.

Interesting Fact : The scientific reason why in Western culture, earwax is called « wax » is due to the specific gene coding for it in Caucasian DNA. Asian people actually have a double recessive allele on this gene which makes their earwax have a texture more akin to powder. Hence the reason « wax » is not common to describe it. Other gene differences are also the reason why asians tend to be less hairy and tend to have less bodily odor than most westerners.

Connor "Don't you need those hairs to hear and stuff" The hairs you use to hear are actually way further down your canal filled surrounded by fluid, this is why they also help with balance, when the fluid in the ears move these tiny extremely tiny hairs get moved (and theres thousands of them) and send signals. The hairs in the parts of the canal seen here are also important though, they're used to keep out filth and they're quite useful for helping prevent infections and such. I know Connor will never read this, I just hope someone finds this short lesson about ear hairs fascinating enough.

I used to not clean the inside of my ears very frequently (like maybe once a month) but then I got water in my ears, got clogged and infected, and the doctor sucked it out with a little vacuum and it was SO PAINFUL I fainted for a second and then cried!! I couldnt walk straight for the rest of the day either. It was more painful than when my pain meds wore off after having surgery.

When I was maybe 12 or so, I had progressive hearing loss in one ear for a couple weeks, eventually seeing my doctor and then an ENT (ear-nose-throat) specialist. He had this massive vacuum thing that also squirted warm water to suck the impacted wax out. (I'm also White, so I have the brown waxy earwax, and my body overproduces it.) Getting that done was one of the most intensely painful things I've ever experienced in my life, so I resolved to never let it get that bad again. Some time in college, I started having intermittent hearing loss again, so I found carbamide peroxide ear drops (you can get them anywhere they sell OTC pharmaceuticals) and a bulb to flush them out. My first time, I had to use the drops for 4 days, but when the wax did finally start coming out... damn.

As a person who’s had issues with my ears, I’ve done some research so I’ll explain a bit that might not have been obvious in the video. Connors feeling pain because the skin under the wax is sensitive. A lot of times when people who haven’t gotten their ears cleaned like this finally get it done. The very top layer of skin will actually come off as well. This is because of the wetness of the wax basically turning the thin skin inside the ear into almost wet paper. It’s good to have your ears cleaned professionally for this reason. It helps keep them healthy. Like they mentioned it can improve your hearing. In the modern day it’s especially important because of headphones, over ear and especially earbuds. The earbuds obviously go into the ear, so they can push wax deeper in and make it into an impacted clog. That’s when you can suddenly get hearing loss. The over ears do a similar thing just due to the pressure on your ears. Ear wax does naturally fall out of our ears on its own, it’s supposed to roll up and fall out. It’s purpose is much the same as mucous in the sense that it coats over invaders like dust and such and it will eventually fall out. But because of headphones it doesn’t do that like it’s supposed to. There are a few ways I’d recommend trying at home on a daily basis. When you take a hot shower, you can let some of the water into your ear and drain it back out. Do this repeatedly as the heat will melt the wax and the wax water will drain out but if you only do it once it’ll just block you up when the wax melts. Another thing you can do but less often is hydrogen peroxide. It bubbles inside your ear and can help break down harder formations of ear wax, allowing for easier cleaning later on.

Fun fact: people from East Asia and South East Asia (as well as Native Americans) will more likely gave a dry/powdery type of ear wax (a genetic trait that's recessive) while all others are more likely to have the wet type (that's genetically dominant). Those with the dryer type of wax also sweat a reduced amont and produce less body odour :)

I actually have a condition that makes my ears produce slightly more ear wax than normal, and the first time I went partially deaf I was so scared but then I went to the doctor and they just flushed my ears out and it was fine. My condition has also caused me to have tinnitus in some way, but luckily it's not as loud as some people's and I can still sleep without external sounds helping.

My 2 Caucasian children have the powdery ear wax that is usually only found is people of Asian descent. I find it so much harder to clean their ears because the wax falls into the ear too easily rather than stick to the object I use to try and clean them out. I’m too scared to go any further because I don’t want to accidentally touch the eardrum, but I’d love to get their ears cleaned here…especially my youngest daughter (10 yrs) as one ear is completely blocked over with the dry ear wax. Surely it can’t be good for her hearing.

Yikes, Connor it isn't your fault that this hurts, the skin in our ears is very thin, that cotton bud is literally directly rubbing up on your nerves. Some find that feels good, some find it hurts, but your brain is screaming STOP. As someone who's studying the field of sound/hearing, this is potentially damaging. Cotton buds are the worst option to clean your ears, you see youtubers always getting micro suction or water irrigation for safer professional options. He went in so close to the membrane, I was screaming! Im so impressed he was casually doing something soooo risky! If that bud touched that grey membrane (eardrum), it would've triggered a jump reflex sometimes vomiting or some people even faint ( mostly elderly people). We are taught never to go further than 1cm for this reason lol

As someone who’s had chronic ear infections and had 7 “surgeries” on their ears (getting tubes removed/replaced and getting imbedded earring backs removed) by the age of 6 this is hilarious and intriguing to watch 😂🤣😂🤣 I personally think it looks relaxing!!!

I get earwax build-ups so bad that I literally have to go into the doctor once or twice a year to have the doctor clean out my ears, just so I can hear. This procedure doesn't look so bad. It's not comfortable the way they clean out eats with a squirt bottle, either. But, the good outweighs the bad.

just as an advise, putting cotton sticks in your ear canal is extremely dangerous and unhealty, it can push earwax into your eardrum and cause mild deafness, an infection or pierce the eardrum causing permanent damage. also "cleaning" the wax too often just promotes the production of more earwax. your ear canal is designed to not require external help to clean itself. if you feel the necesity to clean your ears, go to a professional.

Most Asians have a gene variant known as ABCC11 that produces dry ear wax. 98% of caucasians have a variant that produces wet ear wax. The variant that most Asians have also means they don’t have body odor and don’t have to wear deodorant. Even though I am Caucasian of European descent, I am lucky to have the same variant as Asians. I don’t have ear wax, I don’t sweat or have body odor and I also don’t get bit by mosquitoes.
