Up until recently Bridgerton was the most popular show on Netflix and has been a gateway for a lot of new people to fall in love with historical costuming. Over the last few years there has been a lot of discourse about the inclusivity of the cast, Regency London, entertainment geared towards women, etc. If you are new to this channel, let me put it out right now that I am a fan of let people like things. Not everything is for everyone. In theatre, we ask the crowd to suspend their disbelief and enjoy the story. Theatre is a means of telling story which connects everyone. From my perspective that is exactly what I experienced at the Bridgerton Experience, an interactive live theatre event for fans of the Bridgerton Books and Netflix series.
Regency costuming has been a love of mine for a long time. I remember being in high school when I was first exposed it it and I loved the aesthetic of the light muslin dresses with cap sleeves. I wish more people had been dressed in period attire for my show time, but they were all in clothing that made them feel beautiful which is really the spirit of the event. I could have always coordinated better and gotten a bunch of friends together in regency costume to add to this for my own fun too.
The performers were great at getting everyone out to dance and the dances were easy enough to learn. I got a little confused because I already know some English country dances and the ones taught for the experience don't necessarily do all of the sets in country dancing, but they do use the movements.
Over all the experience will be a great time for fans of the show. It is almost like Ren Faire for people who like Regency Costuming. I was in the venue for about 2.5 hours. If you want to add more sparkle to your outfit there are accessories for sale before and after.
I made my headband a few years ago. Link below.
• How I Made a Christmas...
My Jewelry all came from ‪@DamesalaMode‬ I loved that she had these topaz stones that matched the block print on my muslin.
My shoes, stockings, and dress pattern were from ‪@AmericanDuchess1‬
My corset pattern came from ‪@RedthreadedCorsets‬
The muslin for my dress came from www.rennaissancefabrics.com
I used industrial Zip Ties as boning, and still need to make a center busk.
The twill and bias tape I used on the corset came from www.destash.us
Shawl was thrifted.
What I loved?
It is a great intro to costuming event. Anyone is welcome to purchase a ticket and attend. The inclusivity was beautiful.
The decoration around the venue was lovely and you saw a lot of the hanging wisteria flowers that you see int he Bridgerton branding.
The Actor's performance and costuming was beautiful.
Getting your own Lady Whistledown gossip sheet with instructions was very cute.
While you could buy alcohol, there were other drinks available.
They had some of the costumes in cases where you could see the detail put into each of the items of clothing.
What would I have changed about this event?
Being able to get tapas or something like this from the bar would have been nice. I didn't realize I would get hungry before.
Pictures/ Portraits- The photo op spots were fun, but the lighting for them was not great and the upward angle most photos were set up to be taken from is not flattering for everyone. Since there was a request for no professional cameras it would have been nice to have the option for a professional to be taking photos for purchase inside.
Over all. I it would be a fun event to go out and try regency costuming at for a few hours. In the next few weeks I will post some break downs of the new pieces I made to make my regency look work for this. Have you attended the Bridgerton Experience near you? I would love to hear about your visit in the comments section.
