In today's video I'm going to show how the docking maneuver of a bulk carrier is done in the port of Paranaguá in Paraná, I spent the day following the work of the pilots at the port of Paranaguá.
PILOTAGE: The pilot is called in by the Pilotage Operations Center one hour before the ship's arrival at the bar. Upon arriving at the boarding bridge, the pilot puts on the life jacket and gloves and waits for the ship to approach at two miles (about 3,600 m). He boards the speedboat and goes against the vessel.
To board the pilot, the speedboat master approaches the ship's ladder and, in a precise act, the pilot holds the rope firmly and climbs towards the ship's officers. Incredible as it may seem, this is one of the most critical moments in the pilot's work. Any slip or stumble can cause an accident, at least a fall into the sea.
Everything going perfectly, the pilot goes to the command room where the captain is. From that moment on, the ship is handed over to the pilot. All the movements he will make until docking are defined by the pilot. A ship's maneuver is an exercise in intelligence and experience, the Brazilian pilot needs to be always connected to nature's reaction, in order to be able to decide the most appropriate maneuver for that particular condition.
PORT OF PARANAGUÁ: The Port of Paranaguá is a Brazilian port located in the state of Paraná, in the city of Paranaguá. It is the largest export port of agricultural products in Brazil, with emphasis on soybeans and soy bran.
SHIP: Bulk carriers have large hydraulic hatches that cover the holds, where products are stored without counting units, specific packaging or identifying any commercial brand. They will load and unload at special port terminals for this type of cargo.
