You think a better premise would be if Tylor was the "top scarer" at his school, he'd have an extremely aggressive and serious personality that was forced to adapt to a light-hearted and comedic environment. Imagine all the funny possibilities of a horrific, bloodthirsty beast forced to conform into silly shenanigans with bubbly co-workers!
The problem with that is Monsters Inc and U showed us the Top scatters are Normal dudes. Sully, George, Mikes Hero, most of the students are fun loving guys who put on a Scary Face for work. It’s just a Job
Tyler Tuskman is a name that just screams "supporting cast," not "main character." If Mike and Sully just worked with the guy instead of him basically replacing them, it'd just seem like harmless worldbuilding instead of offensively lame.
or hell, build off of that idea! Lean into it! Have him be a background character--even literally showing him as such in a flashback where mike and sully are doing something. And then have him strive to find something that makes him stand out, maybe make him try to be someone he's not. It'd be predictable, but it'd at least explain his genericism
Bro Tyler Tuskman sounds like the name they’d give to one of the love interests of the hot female protagonist just so there could be a love triangle for drama.
I really loved that one scene in the final episode where Sully opens up to Tylor. I really liked how they emphasized how Sully felt terrible about scaring Boo
I know I'm supposed to sympathize with Tylor but... He was such an ASSHOLE to everyone. Yeah, MIFT was annoying as shit but Tylor was a piece of shit to every single person in my opinion
Tyler's design put me off the show because it felt like they tried to make him...attractive. His physique, the gelled hair...he just come off as such a "DeviantArt OC" and it creeps me out. Edit: JFC you just called them "DeviantArt OCs" and I'm about to die
The thing that bothers me about Val's backstory is that if she's the kind of person to talk to a guy one single time and believe that makes them best friends, then she should be under the delusion that she's friends with everybody. Her personality is that she's affectionate, wears her emotions on her sleeve and isn't shy about getting into people's faces. The idea that she was lonely and never had any other friends in college just doesn't mesh with what we know about her. Honestly, her being a wierdo who thinks she's the most popular person around even though no one can stand her is a lot funnier than her just being single mindedly focused on Tyler.
I'm gonna say it. They wanted to market him as a tumblr sexyman. I feel it in my bones. The triangle body, the horns, the mostly humanoid body type when we definitely have gotten weirder ones?
I think if I remembered correctly some of the team had been active on tumblr (I know one of them was there posting on tumblr their stuff and was also in the tangled the series staff too) I’m just pulling a theory here but you wouldn’t be far too much from that possibility. Just saying 🤷♀️ the possibilities are there…
how to be hot: be a supernaturally lanky or abnormally short male, have a mysterious smile and backstory, and boom you will be thirsted after for millennia
Tyler Tuskman is the kind of character that appears in the background of one scene and all information in their wiki page comes a 2 sentence tweet the writer made while they were drunk
There's something about looking at blue Mike that I can't help but have a slight smile in my soul. It's cheap, lazy, and pretty soulless, but there's something about seeing two Mikes on the screen at once
You know what it actually reminds me of? Y'know how in old disney animated movies like Lady and the Tramp the children looked like exact clones of one of the parents? With a slight color-shift if you were lucky? So Mike and Randall-
Honestly I kinda love how he's literally just Anti-Mike Wazoski, I think it's funny as hell. Imagine if your rival was just your clone with a fake mustache on
This premise would’ve worked better if the main character was actually kinda scary. Make him bigger than Sully, more imposing, a darker color palette and none of the softer features like fur or friendly eyes. This guy who would’ve killed it as a scare-r if only Monsters Inc. still used Scream power. So now this giant hideous abomination has to try to learn comedy but it doesn’t come easy because most kids scream at him in sight. That’s a way better premise!
The jokes flow naturally from that idea too. Like, he could try to do himself up as a clown to look funny, only to end up as this horrific Pennywise abomination that's even scarier.
You could’ve had him be a newer and younger monster who is disgruntled at the fact that he had been training his entire life to be a scarer and ended up missing out since the veterans have switched to becoming comedians.
Watching JS get so furious over a character design is so much more entertaining than it has any right to be. But yes, just last night, I was watching 24 Frames of Nick roast Paws of Fury and one of the many criticisms was the character designs and how forgettable they are. Character design is one of my favorite things in animation since there is almost no limit to that and if done well, it really makes me want to check out a show or movie.
If you compare it to monster zone- an MHA excuse of Mexican animation that makes impulsive parent go to US illegally for their children just because this HP rip-off said so, Monsters at work at least have a better script
Tyler tuskman looks like a guy you... Kinda knew in high school. And then years later, you run into him at McDonalds and he's like "hey man!" And you're like, "Heeey.... Tim-ty-tyson?" And then he gives you a disappointed look as you grab your mcnuggets and run for the hills.
One of the most interesting parts of animation is character design. Just by looking at someone you can tell a lot about them. Sure, judging a book by its cover is a big no-no that preschoolers learn, but this is different. You can tell by people's expressions what they feel. You can guess what they are like by their style, do they look more professional, cute, casual, etc. Concept art and promos are supposed to show the basics of the characters. I decided to speculate how Taylor's design and personality changed. At first, he was bright yellow with four arms, and small horns, and was smaller in general. With this anatomy, he was practically made for working with multiple tools. The second design gave him bigger horns and fewer arms. In both, he has this big smile, curious look as if wondering what to fix next. The third one shows his current look but with a tuft of yellow fur as a nod to his predecessors. In the fourth and official one, they decided to drop it or Tylor dyes his fur. Now he is a big purple monster with long horns. As the development progressed, Tylor became less and less suited for the job of an engineer. - He has fewer hands. - He is so tall and big that it will be hard for him to get into small places. - His horns will be getting in the way, even the trailer shows it as they hit some pipe. - He is only shown smiling with his mother, after graduating from MU. For most of the trailer, he is shown to be worried, confused, annoyed, or dare I say scared. In my opinion, somewhere in the development, Tylor Tuskmon was changed from a happy and enthusiastic new worker ( We will make kids laugh now. This is gonna be great! ) to a would-be scarer whose life got just turned upside down ( Are you kidding me ? I went to the MU for this ? )
I feel like his design probably reflects the emotions of the poor artists working on this show. Going from ']"this is gonna be great!" to "I can't believe I gave myself student debt for this."
@@TuesdaysArt well some people are scared of lizards, and I hope you realize he’s a lizard like monster. So it makes sense she’ll be scared of him, if she’s scared of lizards, that is.
@@ZipTheSilliest I tried to word myself carefully in my comment. What the franchise seems to hold up as "scary" traits-large stature, claws, generally more "beastly" traits as seen in Sully's design-aren't really anywhere in Randall's design aside from sharp teeth, which Mike also has (and Mike isn't considered "scary", to the point where he had to give up on his dreams of being a scarer). Hell, take a look at Randall's design in Monsters University. Sure, children are scared of different things and maybe Boo thinks Randall looks scary, but I always got the impression that Boo found Randall scary because of the way he acts (especially when Boo isn't afraid of Sully at all until he accidentally roars in front of her).
When I first saw the season I always wondered why val (the yellow girl) was so obsessed with tyler for no reason and basically manipulated/gaslighted him that they were friends for a long time and never listened to him when he was upset, Those were one of the things that made me dislike the character
Exactly, and when Taylor didn't give her an ounce of applause for her new job, she threw an upset behavior like a baby. Oh, no one wanted to sit next to her in college? Boo hoo. Maybe it's because she's so annoying!
I actually like the idea of "I just got out of school and am so excited that my job just became obsolete" being the main characters trait In the hands of a decent team this could have said something interesting about the progression of work and art
Tyler/Tylor's like those anime protagonists that are intentionally the blandest possible so the fans can subconsciously pretend they're in the story instead of them
I’ll be perfectly honest, I didn’t really care for Tyler or the other new characters, I just wanted to see Mike and Sulley again and the show didn’t disappoint when it came to that. Hoping they appear a _lot_ more in season 2.
Other media like to just throw in cameos for the sake of a cameo and for "nostalgia-pandering," that contributes nothing to the overall story. What this show did right was it kept Mike & Sully prominent characters whilst shifting the spotlight of main character to Tylor.
The Tyler Tuskman jpeg is the only thing from this show that will stick in my head. On a completely unrelated note, I need to clean my phone because of the saliva that may or may not be there.
I really like the concept idea. And honestly, just some of the things they talk about during the production. I wish I'd brought more of those ideas into what we have now. In my opinion, what we got isn't the worst. We just see so much potential overlooked
I honestly thought this series was pretty fun, it was cool to see what the monster world was like after Mike & Sulley’s decision to stop scaring at Monsters Inc.
Same but Taylor’s design IS kinda ugly. You cant lie. And I like val’s or whatever her name is personality, but her design is also kinda bad. The crab, forgor her name, has a nice personality imo as well and her design is okay. But the green guy (also forgor his name) is kinda ugly…
Late, but I agree! I wanted to see what happened while Mike and Sully were in charge and how they changed to laugh power, and I find what we got satisfying!
In defense of Cutter, she’s easily the funniest character of the entire crew. And Duncan getting wrecked by a vending machine in episode 5 had me in stitches
Dude, the one character's motivations wanting to be manager could've easily been made. They make jokes of monsters dying on the job, right? So, make his motive for being rude and yearning for being in charge due to losing a loved one in the dangerous environment. That way, he can make sure safety measures are met and nobody has to be hurt again. Simple.
If they have access to Mike and Sully’s character models, then they could have used the background characters from Monster’s University and modified them for the bowling rival team and the MIFT team (though I’d argue that Val (the Art ripoff) is fine because it’s just a great and unique design in general). Heck, they could’ve used the designs for the preschoolers from the original and sequel. If they were gonna be lazy, they could’ve at least tried something more strenuous than color swapping.
The worst thing about Monsters at Work being centered around a background monster design is that the other monsters are perfect main character material. Like Flint. Or the three sorority sisters. Or Carla. *Anyone* but Tyler Tuskmon and MIFT. Hell, I'd love to hear the riveting parallel to Mexican immigration story that clearly radiates from Carla's name alone. But seriously, I like the plot, but the character design and wasted potential is just...horrifying, really. Especially since a deleted scene shows Tylor's graduation and it has like, *so* much more character injected into it.
I think Tyler's blandness comes to the idea that he's supposed to be on of those "everyman" characters though more specifically, he's supposed to be represent those who go through college for a profession that ends up not being used anymore and just feeling lost because that one job that they were training for ends up being null void. I do agree that the designs and personalities could've been done better, especially for some of the Mifts. Glad I'm not the only one that was annoyed at how they acted towards Tyler and yet when the justified anger for Tyler comes, we're supposed to feel bad for reasons? The show could've done better but I did somewhat enjoyed. My favorite part was probably the scene where Sulley talks about Boo and how he felt bad for scaring her that one time and that moment is what motivates him to go from scare power to laugh power and why he never wants to go back to the old methods.
Why is the main character look like a background character in Monster's University? They could've made him this BIG, brutish, ferocious-looking monster. Showing that he was basically made for scaring kids. Visually it would've been funnier seeing his journey. Also the idea of Sulley and Mike integrating monsters into comedy sounds AMAZING! It would've been so much fun! It also could've shown the conflict of monsters not wanting to change to laughter. Like a wrinkly old squid saying "Back in my day it wasn't a proper scare unless the kid was convulsing on the ground in terror!! Now monsters want to SUCK UP[insert visible gag with squid suckers] to these horrid little creatures?? [spits ink on ground in disgust] Shameful."
What frustrates me most about this show is that I CAN see its potential right in front of me, yet the staff squandered it with weak writing and terrible characters. There were plenty of moments where the show presented a concept that, in my opinion, was very clever and helped expand the setting of the movie: An example being the ep where they show the procedure of fixing a kid's room if a scarer acciddentally breaks something incriminating. That's really clever! Or the ep revolving about the mystery of why the Abominable Snowman was banished; The idea that in truth it was less about the mail tampering and rather that Waternoose silenced him after he found out docs related to Randall's scare extractor was a cool recontext of the 1st film.... BUT it's all wasted because the show has to revolve around bland Tyler and Jim boring friends because the writers wanted to just write a generic The Office-like sitcom!
Imagine if the main character looked like a perfect monster, with sharpy teeth and hollow eyes, a monster who would easily hid in the shadows, somethibg that would make any kid horrified just by the image of a dark figure smiling at you in the dark. And now this monster, that studied his whole live and knows that he was born to be the scariest monster to ever existed, who has just entered the job of hia dreams, discoverd in the last second that his dream job now his a clown fest, where laugh took the place of screams, this would be a dope series. The series could be more about reviving the old ways and how the scary monster would find jobs now that they were substitute by the funny monsters.
Suggestions that MAW should've gone with: -Some MI material stated that the company didn't convert all floors to laugh floors; some remained scare floors and naughty kids got scared instead of entertained -Tylor maybe instead has potential to be a comedian, but is reluctant to take up the offer because he has a fear of kids (like Sully in an early version of the movie), so he just sticks to MIFT because it's easier (as long as he doesn't go in a kid's room). Thus his storyline would be about him finding out how he got his fear and how he overcomes or copes with it -Duncan could've been a former scarer who had some issues scaring kids a little TOO well, and was sent to MIFT as punishment. His goal would be to get MI to go back to it scaring routes and tries to sabotage the new comedy routines of the other scarers in an attempt to prove they're not ready for the change
Goddd I only manage to do half of the season as it was airing but I 100% get what you mean on the infuriating waste of potential. I ADORED the concept and premise of this series, I thought Tyler's initial struggle was a pretty relatable situation for students to go through, especially in the animation department (ex. "you studied hand drawn animation? well the industry is majority rigged animation now, get to learning if you want a job") but it was just WASTED. I felt like no emotional weight was allowed for majority of it so that it could be less serious as a result. Episode 1 alone, after learning Tyler's parents worked so hard to get him his education, I was expecting him to make a phone call to them and struggle to explain his situation before faking it and saying "Yup, everything's great, mom.". Maybe it would've been cliché, but at least I would've felt his struggle more. I was even expecting going into the series for a moment of Tyler just snapping at Sully about the scare to laughter decision, and how they should switch back to scaring kids since the switch caused problems across the whole company, only for Sully to put his foot down on how he REFUSES to ever let another kid be scared again after what happened with Boo. (edit: apparently that may or may not have happened in the eps I didn't see! good to know) I'm rambling here, but GOD Monsters at Work was a series I wanted so badly to do well but didn't ;;;;; Your character design rant was also greatly done btw
Every time you went over Sulivan's deisgn, i couldnt help but think of a bear, cuz thats what Sulivan basically is Big, fluffy, friendly looking, but also scary
Ahhh Monsters at Work. I remember watching the first episode thinking this show has potential, and really digging the split storyline between the old characters and the new characters. I wasn't a fan of most of the new guys but hey, maybe they'll get better as the show goes on?
The couple seconds of no sound and just that single image felt like I was being indoctrinated into a Tyler Tuskman (an absolutely _fantastic_ name by the way Disney) cult.
This is just The Office or Parks and Recreation or Abbott Elementary or any other workspace Sitcom but without any of the personality and wearing a skinsuit of Monsters INC.
What makes the original monster Inc characters work so much is they're simple but not basic, you can look at something light blue and purple and think sully look at a green circle with a eye and think Mike ect monsters at work are just basic and don't stand out
This show wasn't even made by the original company named Pixar! 💀 I'm not considering this canon at all. It's just a like fan made animation, nothing else. Randall is so out of character as well, not even talking about his weird physical appearance... He was more taller in the original movie.
3:59 And he probably has a hard time going through narrow doorways with those horns and just generally has a hard time with them because he's tall and they're wide but he just kind of rolls with it without ever putting up too much of a fuss about it.
this show was epic shut up grew up with the film and watched this as a 32 year old adult over the past week and i loved it - no complaints and thoroughly entertained - laughed and cried and everything in between.
yeah the video wasn’t ok to make and that’s why he deleted it; but there was nothing but good intentions behind it, plus both of them are adults and Just Stop actually cares about his friend which is why he said anything
@@Brodyisreallycool he didn’t even know them, he literally admitted to only talking with him ones. stfu with the Excuses. And even if he didn’t know them, it’s still none of his business especially when he’s a kid who doesn’t know shit. I will not argue with you
I was excited to see that Pixar had created a TV show, only to be disappointed with how mediocre the first episode was and never thought it again until Just Stop made the community post to announce this video. Destory this show!
My brain erased everything between the first five and last five minutes of this entire show tbh. oh, and as for the personality, I see a coat rack. Tyler is a coat rack. That's it.
Personally I really liked this show. Tyler is a fine MC to follow around because everyone he surrounds himself with is so visually distinct, that his near normal humanoid appearance makes him distinct from other people. This is the monster world, and that boring design works for the world. The show for me was a fine one with some good characterization. Plus you get to see plenty of Mike as he does the comedy classes. I think the runners went into the right direction with this show. I can definitely understand some of gripes but to me it was not that bad. I really liked Sully and Tylor's interactions, but anything with Sully is usually gonna turn out to be pretty great.
Frankly, I really liked the show. And I think Taylor's design works for the story shown. He IS the monster everyman, he is the generic monster who wished to be a proper monster but need to adapt to a changing world. He is the background character but we focus on him this time.
Honestly I feel like they could’ve done better with the characters and designs. Imagine a centipede like character who rocks a series of tool belts, is surprisingly good at his work, somewhat antisocial with limited interactions outside of scarying people by just being present. A character who feels like he should’ve been a scarer, but for some reason isn’t even allowed to be with any mention as to why getting everyone going mum about it. Its like how there is that Russian guy from Ratatouille who has a mysterious background that no one really knows. Or like the boss. Sure, you can have him friendly, but maybe make him more of one of those washed up types. Like he’s spent his time there, you can see it taking its toll on him, he still loves what he does, but he has some struggles with changes going on. Also I get that Duncan is supposed to be this Dwight-esq character, but he could’ve been done so much better. Toss in an angle where he sees the boss like a father figure and show it well. Go with that being why he is defensive over trying to get the position. That he feels like it is the end goal of that chapter of his career, after all he’s been through. Maybe make him mimic the bosses mannerisms showing his influence of how he does things.
I started watching this video, then saw Puss in Boots 2. That movie really gets character designs; everyone is so distinctive and the designs convey their characters so well
When I first saw Tylor, I thought he looked like a redesign of Sulley by people who didn't understand why the original design worked. And I still think that.
