INKBIRD IAM T1 Sensor - amzn.to/3KX1pVo
(There seems to be a 40% launch discount available on Amazon at the moment by checking the 'apply coupon' button)
Welcome back to Stu’s Reviews! Today I take a look at a 'smart' home sensor that has sparked a conversation here at the Country Club, the INKBIRD IAM- T1... using this smart home sensor has made us that maybe more smart home sensors should use e-ink displays? There are a tonne of benefits for using them in devices like a smart home sensor... what do you think?

I've had a poster with e-ink to display the weather for several years now and fell in love with the tech straight away. It's a shame I live in the UK though as it never changes

For that price I'd expect them to publish details of the Bluetooth comms to enable it to work with Home Assistant like Switchbot does with all their Bluetooth devices, without Home Assistant support I won't be purchasing it

I'm not particularly fussed about an air quality monitor but I would love to have an e-ink smart calendar that could show all the family's appointments etc in one place and that could be updated from our phones.

build a home assistant dashboard with an e ink display. or just use an old tablet

there are 2 instructables to build a smart calendars with eink. One with a raspberry pi, another with esp32. I applied the info from the raspberry pi one to build a smart display for weather info.

LIDL just started a month ago to use large and small sink displays for board prices in their shops and looks just fine :)

No back lighting, no ability to run or trigger automation, blue tooth only and $170.00!! A non starter for sure!

I had the Pebble watch when it launched, it was a game changer! Then fitbit bought them and e-ink died slowly and hardly any devices since have it, they are few and far between.

E-Ink Displays are great at Daylight but you cant see anything at Night. I have 2 of these Xiaomi Temperature and Humidity Sensors and they are great as long its not Dark!!!!!!!!

I use an EVE air monitor here at home with a simple eink display and i like it OK. It lasts for months on a charge which is nice but it doesn't always get very accurate info. So Im looking at new sensors, preferable a pair that can work in tandem outside and inside together to form better info.
@robinkesterlives
@robinkesterlives Год назад
The Amazon sensor is $70USD and you are stuck in the amazon world with it. The EVE was $100USD, so not cheap for how small and simple it is.

I have integrated an Inkbird Bluetooth temp/humidity sensor into Apple Home using Homebridge (running on a Pi4 with BT). However, not sure if this device supports this, but there is also a ‘gateway’ hub available that allows their BT devices to connect via that to WiFi, so I think HomeAssistant support is possible, technically anyway. All that said mind, I’m extremely sceptical about how accurate and useful these cheap air quality monitors actually are.
@StusReviewsUK
@StusReviewsUK Год назад
Without scientific equipment it’s hard to measure accuracy for CO2 levels, although what I can say is that it does measure increases and decreases when I have windows open/closed.

@@StusReviewsUK Yeah, I saw a RU-vid video that tested a few. All ‘worked’, but the results were wildly different. Anyway I agree with the idea of using e ink more. I guess it’s cost, but yes so many devices from the likes of Aqara would seriously be benefit from it.

Definitely seems expensive. When I went to check the price, there’s currently 40% off which makes it slightly more reasonable… and certainly cheaper than competitors with e ink displays.

I would have expected something a bit higher resolution for the screen tbh. Like a cheap-o kindle can produce smoother characters than that...maybe it's just a software issue.

@@StusReviewsUK great in-depth review but the price tag 🏷️ just doesn’t seem to be justified by any means. I see as a £20 product with Bluetooth so pushing it to £25. Aqara’s Tvoc system is around £35-£40 and can be used for automation. I do agree about little white boxes being everywhere can be very boring.

@@StusReviewsUK matter support would definitely fix a lot of the issues they have. I've noticed that there's no thread based matter supported temperature sensors on the market at the moment, which for cyber security if you want to have a more secure smart home with less point of entry, it's ideal to have it because of thread's security benefits.
