Aqara has released a new Thermostatic Radiator Valve, and left me asking more questions about my DIY Smart Heating than I would like. With ZigBee 3.0 and Matter support is that the TRV we all should be using?

Does this valve only turn on 100% heating and 0% or does this valve also open the valve halfway while tracking the setpoint?
@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos Год назад
There are so many TRV's out there. We don't really have Hydronic heating in Australia, but it seems popular enough to have lots of different options around. My personal preference for battery devices is either Zigbee or Z-Wave, but Shelly has really come a long way with WiFi options that are battery.

I used to think this would be posh... but with prices set to be insane, you'd be silly not to invest and bring the bills down now. Tough times
@2377shortie

How long on average does it take to calibrate? I have hive trvs currently and they can take 4 hours to calibrate and rhe heating had to be on when you don't this. Sometimes they also don't calibrate so you have to go through it all again. Other times it will calibrate and a few weeks later uncalibrate and you have to go through it all again.

how does it detect the open window? when it senses a sudden drop in temperature probably? that would be nice!
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech Год назад
That's how the open window detection works. It looks at the recent temps and calculates the drop range. If that crosses the threshold set it assumes the drop is caused by an open window

@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech Год назад
Bear in mind that I haven't used the nest stuff so my advice is a bit blind. Going ZigBee enables you to switch over later while locking into nest will leave you .. well limited. Personally I'd use awara given a choice
@TheRealWurstCase
@TheRealWurstCase Год назад
Does it actually stop at a specific position (e.g. 75%) or does ist keep turning the valves on and off if it can't keep the temperature constant ?
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech Год назад
It will close the valve when setpoint is reached and open again if too much heat dissipate.

What is the mount/adapter name? I got a few Aqara TRVs for my underfloor heating system but the problem is they don’t fit next to each other on the pipes manifold. Wonder maybe the adapter is the key 🤔

You could add an automation to your home automation software to set the temp to X if manually set to over X, i believe the aquara mobile app allows IF THIS THEN which could probably do the same thing?

It's all depends on how we use the heating I think. Modern heating systems in apartments can actually heat up a room in about 15 min or less. My last flat took about 3 min for the radiator to be hot to the touch

I understand its a whole load if info and its the most efficient way of portraying it but have you thought of using a autocue app on a tablet set behind the camera? it would make the viewer feel your talking to them. i got one + a the aqara hub and a temp. sensor mounted 4 meters away from radiator to the wall wall.. it keeps the room temp good, but its REALLY noicy!! when it goes a little bit under the set temp it opens fully up until the set temp is reached and closes again.. its not directly the trv that is "noicy" but the water running in the pipes when trv goes FULL open and closes again, is there not a soft mode where it runs more smooth? my old Danfoss eco2 with bluetooth never did this.. an i doing something wrong in the settings ? love your channel by the way 🙂

@@notenoughtech no its hot from bottem to the top. ;-) none of my other 7 radiators with old thermostats is noicy :-) the noicy part is when it opens fully up and then fully closes again. It does this over and over to adjust the temperature 🌡️ Nothing in between like a normal trv 😢

Smart all good but when you renovate or buy a new central heating unit you might look at what your buying and save a double kost later on. Example Bosch EasyControl CT200 can be included with your Bosh unit and from then on your only heating the room your in and say goodby to dump thermostat that needs to be heating the main room (where the main is) to be able to heat for example your hobby room. Ofcourse the thermostat valves for your heater are expensive but your not buying it for 1 day. HEATING more rooms than needed is a NOGO these days, so even if your thermostat at the radiator is automated but it can only function when your main thermostat is active IS A DUMP system EACH radiator thermostat needs to be able to activate your central heating unit if not DO NOT BUY A DUMP SYSTEM

Some Aqara devices are not competitively priced as others in my mind. If this TRV does retail for £54.99, it's going to be overpriced, when you can get the Sonoff that does everything the Aqara does for a lot less. I remember back when the Aqara Contact Sensors were great value for money and bought a few of them. They are great sensors but the last time I checked, they were dearer than the first ones I bought. As for Heating and TRV's, I had a huge investment in Tado but their proprietary communications system sucks and has range issues for people with large homes. I waited 3 years and followed a thread of many angry Tado customers over that time thinking they would fix the problem but its become clear they are not going to bother so I just ripped all the Tado out and replaced the TRV's with Sonoff. I have created a few HA automations to manage my Heating Schedule and Boost operations and I've pretty much replaced the Tado app functionality in a matter of hours. So far, it's all working well, so fingers crossed this will be the last time I swap out TRV's. Best of all, I'm selling the Tado kit for more than its costing to buy the Sonoff 🙂
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech 6 месяцев назад
I don't think Aqara is getting more expensive. They do offer quality products often cheaper than more known to western brands. It was never inexpensive tho. I can personally attest for difference in quality and longevity of Aqara Vs less expensive brands. Budget is a consideration and I'm the first to acknowledge that. Sonoff trv is the one I would go with as well but mostly because of the budget. If money was not the concern I'd pick Aqara trv in this case

@@notenoughtech At the time of writing this reply, a quick Amazon search found the Aqara TRV for £39.99 (with a 27% off promotion), normal price £54.99. I feel / hope like they are never going to be £54.99 because that's a ludicrous price in today's market. At the discounted price the Aqara is not a bad buy but it still wouldn't sway me from the £29.90 Sonoff TRV. That's like a free TRV for every three I buy. Thanks for the video though 👍

You have to remember that Chinese marketing is vastly different to what we are used to in the west. It's all about gamifying the shopping experience etc. you almost never get the RRP. I don't like it...but it works for them in China and I guess it's a process to get the sales data to prove otherwise in the west. On their up side if you are buying for commerce... None of the promotion strategies apply and you get fixed price which is very often non negotiable
