Here's my take on Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields' 'I Won't Dance', recorded live at Mr. Vain.
'I Won't Dance' was first written in 1934, though the story doesn't end there! The original lyrics were written by Oscar Hammerstein II and Otto Harbach for a musical called 'Three Sisters', but the musical wasn't a success. In 1935, though, the 1933 musical 'Roberta' (by Kern and Harbach) was being produced as a movie musical, and 'I Won't Dance' was reused with new lyrics. It quickly became a hit, helped by the fact that it was sung in the movie by none other than Fred Astaire. Later recordings include those by Anita O'Day, Frank Sinatra, Blossom Dearie, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Stacey Kent, and Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. I hope you enjoy it!
