Unfortunately mechanics are severely under paid, so people who have the talent and brains to do the job well either don’t start in the first place or leave to more lucrative industries. Electricians, plumbers, hvac techs all make more money (sometimes substantially more) for a job that requires less knowledge.

@@ouch1011 you are 100% correct. I’m a diesel mechanic at an independent shop and to be frank, I look at guys who work at big time places as glorified parts swappers. I’m not an expert, every single day is a learning opportunity. Could I leave my job and go work in an industrial park and be a “maintenance mechanic?” Yes. In fact I could probably leave my job in the morning and have a new job and sign on bonus by the end of the day, but my quality of life would not be the same. Money is nice, but quality of life and the feeling of accomplishment when a job is done is more important to me, as opposed to making $30+ an hour at some slapdick job where you do the same thing every day.

I would never question your diagnosis, I had some major issues with my heating system, I follow your instruction right to the core, switching out my timing chain, housing gasket water pump and flushing out the radiator while the engine idling now the heat come through the vent reading 150 in the winter, once paid a radiator shop 500 dollars to clean my radiator an change out my heater core but still had the same issue within the heating system, this is why I work on my own vehicle now, mechanic these days don't want to diagnosis anything anymore, everything is new parts which doesn't solve the issue you brought your vehicle in for. Been a year now, didn't have one issue from your teaching on how to do. reminds me of many years ago when I worked at a ford dealership I had an exact same situation, ac compressor was replaced at another shop, low pressure side seemed about normal, high pressure side was very low when running and when not running both were equalized. The other shop basically recharged the AC system based off of those low values, it was technically way overcharged by the time I got it. What I ended up finding out was the root problem was that the compressor had come apart, hence why the other shop had replaced it, but the condenser was full of metal shavings clogging it up (which imho, was really a good thing because otherwise all that metal would have gotten back into the new compressor eventually).
@ouch1011
@ouch1011 3 года назад
Unfortunately most mechanics, including those “diagnosing” AC systems have no real idea how they work. For me, it’s easy to see at a quick glance that there is a restriction in the system between the compressor and the high side service port because that is the only reason that the high side pressure on the gauge would drop after the compressor came on. Diagnosis would be quick after that by using a thermal camera, infrared thermometer or even just your hands to see where the system gets cold where it shouldn’t. Done it dozens of times in the past. But you’re right unfortunately, the vast majority of the mechanics working on that would get it wrong.
@garyr7027

They stuck a new pump on a bad condenser, not a very wise move for a new pump. I'm betting that old pump was completely shot, plugged up the condenser... and those type can't be flushed.

This should be basic Air Conditioning 101. The condenser outlet will be cold, since there is likely a restriction in the condenser. Anytime the pressures are odd like this, use a temp gun to find the restriction. It’s also a good idea with any modern vehicle to get a scan of the data first also. Nice work.

I've found this a few times in the past. In several cases I found the problem wasn't a plugged condenser coil but, it was a plugged "filter screen" at the inlet of the condenser. I think the reason for these screens is to keep the chunks out of the condenser in the case of a catastrophic compressor failure. I suppose it's a good idea but, the problem is people don't clean them out after a compressor failure and they plug up with chunks and scorched lubricant.

Unless it's crazy expensive I like replacing the condenser every time I replace a compressor. A mechanic I used to work for before I had my own shop said this restriction can be the root cause of why the compressor seals blow out. A condenser is usually only $100-200 anyway. cheap insurance.

@tiredoldmechanic1791
@tiredoldmechanic1791 3 года назад
One of the rare times the manufacturer tries to make something easier to work on that actually makes it more difficult. As soon as the high side pressure drops lower than it was at rest, a restriction should be suspected. In the old days of the York compressors in Fords, it was very common for debris to block the condenser when a compressor failed. It was common practice to back flush the condenser and lines when a compressor was replaced.
@roberts5118
@roberts5118 3 года назад
These new compressors still block the condenser with debris when they fail. Nothing's changed lol so whenever a compressor fails always anticipate the debris blocking the condenser and replace it as well.

Nice fine! One other hint; if you don't have a scan tool to look at the pressure sensor at the inlet to the condenser is to touch ( back of your hand with a fingernail doing the touching part) the discharge line of the compressor. It would be smoking hot to the touch! Hi pressures = Hi temperatures in the A/C world...

I had an interesting problem with a 2000 Freightliner. The screen on the dryer failed and allowed the small discant pellets to escape into the system. All the lines from the dryer to the expansion valves ( two evaporaters, one in the cab, one in the sleeper) were ALMOST completely plugged. A C worked good for about 5 min then not very good at all. Took a while to diagnose, then took a LONG while to repair.

That’s also why you check temperatures at the top middle and bottom of condenser. If customer states and you confirm only cools effectively she the car is moving, and the fans are on always look for condenser issues. Only way to do it if you don’t have a high level scan tool to check that data.
@michael931

What should the temp readings be if good and what if clogged?
@rickmiller1779
@rickmiller1779 3 года назад
Pressure and Temps are very close together..ex 40psi low side pressure, expext 40-maybe 50 degrees at the pipe(cool or cool to touch) and high side expect similar idea. With over 350psi differences (scan tool to high side service port) could use infrared temp gun, or your hand...just don't be stupid, it's hot side of the a/c system. Service port pipe should feel cool and go back to where it's gets hot, extremely hot!! Pipe and component temperatures are extremely Important in diagnosing temp to pressure issues. Have had many times that pressures look great(40-50 low,150+high), but not cool(pipes or vent) reclaim,.. no refrigerant and perform a/c service and work properly. Obviously has some kind of leak, and dye and time may help find that. Point is pressure and Temps go in tandem. My 2 cents. Great video, as always!

This is a good job to use a thermal camera on as well. The coldness of an ac system is made by changing the phase of the refrigerant from liquid to vapor, and wherever that phase change happens it will get cold. If you scan a condenser and it's not a gradual temperature change from the inlet to outlet sides, then there's a problem. This car was probably bad enough the liquid line would have felt cold/cool.

Sometimes it takes more digging with things like the thermal imager when you have one that has the high pressure sensor on the same side of the condenser as the service port. I wish they’d always put the sensor between the compressor and the condenser to give us more information. See a lot of plugged condensers in Honda’s where the desiccant bag on the side of the condenser comes apart.

To make matters worse if you follow some factory service manuals for "proper" operating pressures they give you certain ranges of pressures for both high and low side under specific ambient conditions. However they tell you the discharge pressure range but there is no discharge port to read pressure on... so some people add refrigerant to get the LIQUID pressure in the correct range thinking they have done the right thing since technically that is a high side of the system and have overcharged the system. Not a problem if you have an a/c machine for charging by weight... if you charge by weight and your pressures are still off you have a problem! Some of us shade tree guys can do quality work without all the fancy tools. Those fancy tools do make things easier though! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and videos!

An experienced auto air specialist can diagnose this issue with just a set of gauges, coupled with the experience from feeling the temperature of the discharge line, liquid line, suction line, and approximating superheat at compressor suction port. Also the amount of hot air being expelled by the condenser can immediately reveal its state of performance. A infra red thermometer is also very helpful for diagnosing.

It would have left me scratching my head. Not sure I could have made a diagnosis. Easy to see in hindsight.

First, put the f-ing scan tool away. If you put a restriction in any flow system, the upstream is high, down stream is low. Ford does it right, and still publishes gauge diagnosis reading. I don’t mean you with the scan tool.

I had a 97 grand marquis. Replaced compressor,condenser and accumulator (required for rock auto to warranty compressor). Worked good for awhile , and later on had a restriction. Accumulator was frosting up and high side was 400 psi. Thinking it was the orifice tube on that one. Sold it before I ever found out. I am not sure if In 97 , scan tool data would supply a psi reading from the high pressure switch. Being able to read that data from a scan tool definitely helps.

Did lots of A/C work for body shops. Liquid line pounding from 2 orifice tubes. Pressure not changing much when A/C turned on from 0 orifice tubes. High side switch fast cycling from lines hooked up backwards. Hood and radiator support capacity stickers missing.

Thanks, this was very helpful. I had a condition similar. I think I'll go back and look at my car a second time.

With low pressures on both gauges, I wouldn't be surprised if some would interpret it as a low charge, and mistakenly add more refrigerant. Nice to see data pids come to the rescue.

Great diag, but the only problem I could see is if the shader port was directly after the compressor on this case you may think the restriction could be the orfice tube or txv. So having the ability to read in 2 locations makes this easy.
