don't worry Allen. muscle weighs more than fat. its natural to gain a bit of weight if you grow your muscles from the leg weights. if you wanna get rid of fat, then you need to do more cardio and diet better so your body uses it up.

Ive heard they can damage joints overtime, this is what happened to my uncle. I prefer weighted vests but to each their own
@devin19222
@devin19222 3 месяца назад
@@Matt-jc2ml I have a simple real world solution that wouldn't do any harm to joints and show maximum benefits of weighted clothing, fat people, your are naturally stronger when you weigh more because you are used to moving more weight, but if you actually exercise, you lose weight if you are doing calisthenics they become easier, because less weight over time. So how to fix this, if you start out real fat, add weight clothing proportionally to your weight loss, so no strength is lost, and it shouldn't harm your joints anymore than being fat would have. So say starting at 300lbs, if you can do a pull up, pushups, run, whatever, as you lose weight, doing all those things now at say 180lbs after a couple years, but with 120lbs of weighted clothing would make you extremely strong and agile, no other training needed. Actually not much strong in this scenario from the start, but a 180lb guy with the strength of a 300lb guy. Also weight could probably be worn all day, since again you already wore it all day as fatty.

Ex-Metal Drummer here. Was a drummer for a 3 years, before I really got into a Metal Band, and the band... and me too... wanted me to be able to be that fast double bass running (I.E. Lombardo From Slayer). So... while I could match the pace, I couldn't maintain that speed for a full 5mins for a song, much less a 30min-1 hour set... So I did this _Basically..._ I put 10lbs on each leg, for 20lbs total, at the ankles... and then went to work everyday where I was the Fastest and main sandwich maker at a Wendy's. That kept me moving all the time, which is what I think was missing the most from this vid. I was still using all the smaller muscle giving me finer control over my legs, rather then *_WADDLING_* everywhere like he was doing. Within 4 weeks of doing this, my legs were machine guns, sadly the band never really went anywhere and now I have a 13piece Drum kit just collecting dust for over a decade.

The thing with people trying this weighted training I've noticed is how big the jumps in weight are with how little adapting time there is. There hasn't been a single proper test of this weighted training yet. For a proper test of effectivity, you need to increment the weight very little at a time and continue with your normal training. You increase the weight just enough that it doesn't affect your dexterity at all and do your training like normal besides your daily life. When you can't notice the weights anymore, then you increase again just until you notice without it affecting your dexterity again. To properly test this, it wouldn't take weeks, but possibly over a year or more to do it properly and actually check the results.
@foodflare9870
@foodflare9870 2 месяца назад
I have been completely of the same opinion, there's been too much focus on quick jumps to high amounts of weight. The thing is, even the anime they're basing their thing on had the characters build up to those weights over long periods of time. Goku didn't get up to his heavily weighted clothes immediately, he built up to it, as a kid he had tasks meant to build muscle, then he got a weighted turtle shell, then a heavier shell, etc over long stretches of time. Rock Lee didn't go to his current weight immediately, he built up to it.

Others have said it already, but I'll also add it myself that you'd probably be a LOT better off with something like a weighted vest over weights on your legs, both because of what the trainer noted about knees and hips, but also more generally because what you want/need is greater overall resistance.
@AvoidTheCadaver
@AvoidTheCadaver 3 месяца назад
Absolutely agree. I used to live about 2.5km walk from work so I started wearing a weighted vest and picked the route that had the most inclines and declines and walked it 4 times a week. I got to the point where I had 20kg in my vest and still had 10kg left to go. 30min each way Made for a great work out but by damn did my shoulders ache by the time I got to work or home.
@FallLineJP
@FallLineJP 3 месяца назад
I’d probably say that the *majority* of added weight should be worn in a vest. I could see a potential benefit of some *small* extra weights on whatever extremities are important in your chosen discipline (legs for running - help increase cadence, arms for martial arts, etc)

This is for sure the right conclusion, it works but inefficiently. I had lipedema for 25 years, got the surgery this November, they removed 20 lbs of tumors from my legs, and when I got into the gym again I basically had super powers. But I probably would have BETTER super powers if I just worked out for 25 years without all the leg problems.

When I was 11 to 13 years old, I used to wear ankle weights, alternating 2kg to 4kg, almost everyday. Yes, even to school. I used to do kenpo, boxing and kendo too, so I trained regularly. The only time I took it off was to sleep and when I used to spar. It actually made a world of a difference compared to others in my classes. My legs were much stronger than a lot of people, I was also always first in short distance running in those years, also absolutely amazing at long jump. I stopped because I didn't wanna be seen as a weirdo or cringe weeb 😂 now at 24, my ankles are still strong, my knees are fine too except for the damage I've done from sports years later after the weights, but I think if not done right, how you walk, how you disrtibute the weight when lifting your leg etc., for prolonged use can result in more damage than good.

I'm a certified personal trainer and almost done with my nutritionist certification. Most weight loss actually occurs from changes in diet. From over all caloric intake, to what you're eating, (doesn't really matter when you eat). One thing you can do to create a negative energy balance is to eat complex carbs lower on the glycemic index cause you digest them slower which in turn makes you feel fuller longer and more satisfied

Just saw this video and whats interesting to me is that this experiment probably helps understand how extremely obese people cope up with their condition. It helps understand how adding those weights make it more difficult for them to be more active and therefore continue to add to the weight. It helps to understand the struggle these people had to go through to get back in shape.

i havent watched the full video yet so sorry if this is mentioned later. It's very common to gain weight when working out, espeically at first. Because muscle weighs more than fat. I think it's very important for people to not pay such close attention to the numbers, but more attention to how you feel and what more you can do. Being able to run faster, longer, or lift more, those are more rewarding things than seeing the numbers change, and they mean more than the numbers. I dont know how youre considered overweight, you look very healthy, and I think as long as someone is able to keep a active life style then the numbers dont matter after that.
@hata6290
@hata6290 7 месяцев назад
You’re making the kg of feathers vs kg of steel mistake. Yes, he gained muscle, but that was because of the exercise, so fat/water weight was replaced for the muscle. What determines weight is calories which can give you more water/muscle/fat weight. He was apparently in a surplus the whole time, while also gaining muscle from the training
@wahbl997
@wahbl997 4 месяца назад
@@hata6290no he is not doing that mistake, he is totally correct. With correct diet you lose fat slower than gain muscles cause you replenish the energy loss with your food, while fat by itself is like emergency energy storage. @@hata6290 no, youre doing the kg of feathers and kg of steel, we are talking about a liter of feathers and a liter of steel, muscle is denser than fat by ~15%, so when you convert the equivalent volume of fat to muscle, weight goes up. thats why 200 lbs of fat looks very different from 200 lbs of muscle. calories has no bearing on anything because its just energy which is just fat, you either maintain your fat with nominal diet, or else it just increases in excess or decreases through ketosis, where you just exhale and urinate the fat out, which your body does regardless because it has to do that for a lot of normal bodily functions, so if your caloric intake is slightly less than caloric use, your body isnt able to replenish the fat in equilibrium with its usage, you also need protein for muscle mass which is going to stay "in" your body

I love training and there was a period where I was too busy at work and couldn't harvest the time or energy to workout, so I used weights instead. Days after I noticed my elbows and knees were hurting so I checked my posture and the weight PULLS on them, so I had to PULL the weights all the time. This also would make sure that I used more of my core and more of the whole musculature accumulating less useless tension in overactive areas, such as e.g: Quadriceps and hip flexors getting tired to PULLING your leg forward. So the philosophy is god tier, the way you actually pulled it into practice and experiment is awesome. I WOULD do a few adjustments as everything can be better yeah, but nice video.

I'd like to mention that Rock Lee wore his leg weights for years and never took them off so his leg's muscles fully adjusted to the increase in weight to the extent to were he fights and moves around as if he's not wearing weights. I wore heavy steel-toe boots for years because I figure that it would at least passively help me push myself even during regular life and keep my fitness level higher. And I would have to say that I do think that it did do that a little bit, or at least it felt that way. But eventually my knees started to give out and now I can’t do the exercise that I used to do before because of it. So now I am much worse than I would have been if I had not done that, for a marginal improvement while I was able to do it. And I am not even that old yet! lovely seeing that transformation. maybe i should try this. start with one pound, add a half pound a day. maybe sand pouches. like the guy said about injuries, so maybe put the sand in pouches and wrap them to your shins with surran wrap or elastic wrap, it would keep the load below your knees, but you would still need to worry about inertial injuries

Yes!! I did this for two years back in 2004 thru 2006. I would go to work on the train with wrist weights two 5lbs and ankle weights two 10 lbs and i was fast as hell in punching anf kicking. I use to love kick boxing. Had a couple of friends that comment on my hand speed. Goku was on to something. After a week you will definetley feel a difference.
@GerbilOfMight
@GerbilOfMight Месяц назад
I used to do an hour of cardio kickboxing with 5 pounds on each leg three times a week. The problem is if you treat it like normal kicking you will get joint pain and likely problems down the line, HOWEVER, when I altered my movement into a controlled fast lifting motion all the joint problems went away. Treat it more like fast weight lifting, control the motion, do NOT snap the kick, and it does seem to make you faster. Also I modified the weights to not shift but be tightly affixed to my legs. Finally be sure to train your kicks without the weights as well as the additional speed tends to make you overshoot targets. Though rather than leg weights I'd recommend hand weights. I used 1 pound hand weights while holding an additional 8 pound dumbbell while punching the air and that was far easier to set up, control, and I never got joint pain from it. Before you try any leg weights try holding a 1 pound dumbbells in each hand and doing fast but controlled punches. Do NOT hyperextend (which you should never do anyway) and control the punch both ways keeping the muscle taut, do not go limp at any time). Just practice keeping your guard up, punching, and weaving like a boxer. Honestly I got more out of that than the leg weights and it's quite a bit safer/easier.

I also personally used ankle weights, weighted vest, and wrist weights. But, I went gradually, over the span of a little over 3 years. I didn't even work out with the full weights for about a year. I just did everyday activities and only took them off to clean them, myself, or sleep. I also used wrist wraps to protect my skin and an extra layer of cutoff sock tubes above the ankles. I also wore combat boots to further protect the ankles and prevent damage from rolling. I rode bicycle and rollerbladed with this on. Also wearing my heavy school backpack between the last year of high school and going into my first couple of years of JC. Note: I was also a swimmer, swim team, and martial arts was life since 5yo, so I also had them off during swim practice. It was very effective. I also did my basic stretches everyday. Once I got used to the weight and it felt normalized, I started to workout lightly and gradually worked my way up to full workouts, running, rowing, martial arts, calisthenics, light sparring. I remember taking all the weight off on a fight and when I stepped into the ring, I felt light as a feather. Just bouncing on the balls of my feet was awesome. speed, stamina, and force increased by a lot. But, it takes time and a lot of people aren't patient or want immediate results. Which is where you are going to hurt yourself, badly.

Like 21:20 minutes before and 19:30 after and feeling super light with long strides and not breathing hard. I don't recommend it but for me it was only about 12 or 13 percent of my body weight because I was already 235lbs so didn't think there'd be much skeletal risk in my late 20's.

I worked for a volunteer fire department our gear weighs about 100 pounds. If you have add the oxygen gear to go in the building is an extra 20 lb. One are boots weigh about 6 lb depending on your shoe size.

I remember wearing a fifteen pound vest that fit under clothing. and restriction pants that caused about ten pounds of restriction when moving your legs (under clothing) . I did that for a month and a half, only taking it off to shower and sleep. It was too prepared for a mile and a half run. My time was improved by over a minute.

I have been working out for over a decade and weighted vests and ankle weights are a large part of my routine. I strongly believe weighted equipment make a huge impact on performance especially over a long period of time.

When starting an activity, Most things you do will usually become better (or faster) each time you initially do it. In my opinion, It’s likely Thats what actually caused the slight incremental improvement of speed during your tests.
@Makjaoiuewhxkjs
@Makjaoiuewhxkjs 3 месяца назад
Doing the test two times is not enough to be reliable. he would need to do this a few times and on different days. but well, that in itself would be exercise, so I don't think there is a possible reliable way to do a test like that in a short time. He would need to not train, then train normally,, then were weights for a long amount of time with regular control tests in fixed intervals, and control for all the other variables. Like his diet, even the weather. And it still would be discussable because there could be other variables that would be impossible to account for. So it's not really possible anyway. May as well enjoy this for fun test how it is.

I put on the leg weight for 1 month before a basketball competition, it improved speed and agility, but you need some time to get used to the new muscle, a bit like baby learning to walk. So the video's summary at the end is accurate.

fun fact, that running actually came about so that samurai could run without getting their hands caught by either sword at the hip.... so yea, if he was wearing swords he could run faster. If not, it wouldnt make a difference. I know thats not your point, I just thought it was a cool fact to share.

another problem was he pushed things too fast, Lee got that strong in about a year, maybe two years of rigorous training, this guy literally tried to do it in two weeks and literally didnt even train with the weights on, so by the time he had to run the tests again, his body wasnt ready for it, so he couldnt get the full results.
@JuanVasquez-pl4tj

Back when I used to play soccer, I trained with weights on my legs (5 lbs each leg). I remember having to run for two miles with my teammates. First mile with the weights, took it off for the second. I was in last place and finished 3rd. My legs felt so light that my strides were effortless. So yes, wearable weights do help when training.
