Something that I found that helps me with getting that pushed down is using a rounded edge bone folding tool(used in dress making & book binding), an infrared heat lamp to work under & for the holes a rounded tip felt plug(looks like a felt bullet) as this will melt the cordura and make for clean holes. A felt wheel will melt the edges and eliminate the lighter. I have never tried to apply that without having the holster folded. It looks good brother, keep up the great content
I do a bunch of Cordure wrapped holsters. I can't say that I would want to wrap after the holster is formed. I attach the cordura to the kydex sheet before the heat press. I mainly do foam press with cordura but have had luck vac forming using a neoprene membrane. That looked painful, bud! I am sure you won't be adding it to the options. Lol
I do a bit of leather work occasionally. A burnishing tool, like bone or a really nice hard wood, would be awesome at pressing those tight angles, crevices, and flat spots.
I’ve watched Roger at QVO do this several times over the years, after seeing that, I get why he charges so much!! Haha 😂 my customers will have to pay for this service and even then I can only guarantee fitment, the Cordura is anybody’s guess Lol 😂
There is a tool for installing screens in aluminum windows that is similar to the one u have. Where urs has foam it has a hard plastic wheel that is not very thick. Might try that for those inside corners.
I would love to start a Kydex Holster business but don’t know where to begin. What models to start with. How to reach out to customers. How to start a website. I semi retired and would love to make a little extra money to make ends meet. What you do is an art form and have a lot of respect for. It shows that you love what you do through the quality of work you do.
I started with guns that I already owned. Then, I took my work down to my local gun stores and got a few on their shelves. I went with the Facebook route and mostly did work entirely from word of mouth. I started with C clamps, cheap Amazon foam, and a table I made out of 3/4 pine for pressing. Start with big sheets of black kydex, a $40 screws/post kit offline, make some for yourself until you get the hang of it, and start to tell people that you can make em. And turn all of your initial profits into more tools and materials! I started casually two summers ago, and now I have over 100 molds, a legitimate press, every power tool I could ever need, I'm in two gun stores on the shelves, and the employees market for me and send me customers almost daily.
I'm kind of shocked that you were ok with the results, I've been watching your videos for a while and i was under the impression that you were somewhat of a perfectionist and your own hardest critic, but there was a lot of tenting on that. Don't get me wrong I love your stuff and have a lot of respect for what you do. just my opinion for what it's worth. I would have rocked that for myself as a learning experience but not for a paying customer. again love your content and i learn a lot from you.
Wrapping in cordura and printing have 2 totally different endings. Printing leaves a reflective surface. Cordura absorbs the light. Hides well in night vision and infrared cameras.
I wonder if before you fold it. Put it back on the vac mold and heat it up a bit with heat gun. And then put it in the foam press, if that wouldn’t help it lay down into the recesses better.
I have 3 sheets of this exact material to try. I see how not to do it. I’m going to try pressing it on a flat sheet of kydex then form it in a taco press. Love your work.
Smith section goes by barrel length. Select the barrel length you have. All holsters come optic cut so no worries on that. And I do have the x300 so not a problem
You spent so much effort and time to that job, but the result looks like a crap, no offense. But why you think that fabric isn't stretchy? It's the same plastic as many others, but just no solid , and, I guess, it may the same warmed up and formed as others. Is it'll be forming well or badly - it's another question. But wrapping preformed shell by cold fabric - it was a bad idea from the very beginning, in my opinion...
I don't see why somebody wouldn't just order a simple kydex holster in that color so no wrap is required. That looks tedious, and it's gonna come off at some point, no matter how much you baby it. It's gonna look like trash when it starts to. I wouldn't offer it as an option.
